QHNE S5ClHlCC5QlL PIPER HIGH SCHOOL is a sprawling metropolis of students concentrated into one building amid a cluster of housing developments and farmlands. It is an educational in- stitution with an average curriculum that fits an average stu- dent. The population is divided between vocational and pre-college students. Piper is located in an area whose main industry is farming. Many consider high school a first step in their educational plans, while others regard the school as a completion of their formal education. Piper is a AA school of approximately 240 students and a faculty of fourteen. In athletics it is an independent school, but usually a winner. To the individual student only a part of this whole plays an ac- tive role in his life. Some approach school with enthusiasm, others with some interest, and still others with complete in- difference. If each 240 were questioned as to his particular view of the school, 240 different images would appear. These views of life at Piper, the problems, enjoyable aspects, and the students themselves make up an integral piece of the school. This is the story of the 1975 school year in Piper, Kansas .... the development of Piper. 4 The School ,ff Eisgkia 6 I F I YQ 'SQ

if We .r Much of a student's time was spent on individual rather than school-related work. Jobs occupied a great deal of time and energy for many. School often received second priority in both studies and time. Thirty-three of the forty-three se- nior students left early from school for jobs and other related activities. Gasoline for student-owned cars became more and more expensive and everyday living expenses rose sharply during the year. An average date of a movie and a pizza cost a boy at least seven dollars. Although participation was light in athletics and organizations, it played an important role for the school-minded students. A booster club was formed by some active parents. For the first year girl's athletics thrived and the girls organized teams for track, golf, and volleyball. Student Council was kept running by a few students and teachers, accomplishing much more than in past years. Small cliques and little groups of friends tended to share interests and associate with each other. Because of the small popula- tion of students, anything out of the ordinary was known by every student in the school within a matter of minutes. In- dividual activities ran a close second to group effort at Piper this year. The Year 5
