EPHIQ DEQIQLE The people at Piper can be classified into four main groups: jocks, rah-rahs, scholars, and teachers. A few students feel they are capable of all four, but for the most part every student can tit into one category. The student body is made up of 247 students that do everything from lighting off smoke bombs to winning scholarships. The student-teacher ratio is eighteen stu- dents to every teacher, which provides for a more per- sonal relationship with the teachers. Jocks can be identified by Piper Athletics shirts, Converse tennis shoes, and ties on game days. The rah-rahs are obvious. Hardly a clay goes by when some girl isn't wearing a cheerleader or pep club uniform, talking about a pep assembly, or flirting with the jocks. Now, the scholars are the ones that always sit in class, never cause trou- ble, and never fail to say after a test, I just know I flunked it , when everyone knows they will make an A , The teachers, in case you haven't noticed them this year, are the ones that stand or sit in front of class everyday and pour knowledge into our heads so that we will be prepared to confront the great big World outside of Piper when we graduate. But, it is by being around these different kinds of people that we learn and develop into what we will be in the future. 6 The People

if We .r Much of a student's time was spent on individual rather than school-related work. Jobs occupied a great deal of time and energy for many. School often received second priority in both studies and time. Thirty-three of the forty-three se- nior students left early from school for jobs and other related activities. Gasoline for student-owned cars became more and more expensive and everyday living expenses rose sharply during the year. An average date of a movie and a pizza cost a boy at least seven dollars. Although participation was light in athletics and organizations, it played an important role for the school-minded students. A booster club was formed by some active parents. For the first year girl's athletics thrived and the girls organized teams for track, golf, and volleyball. Student Council was kept running by a few students and teachers, accomplishing much more than in past years. Small cliques and little groups of friends tended to share interests and associate with each other. Because of the small popula- tion of students, anything out of the ordinary was known by every student in the school within a matter of minutes. In- dividual activities ran a close second to group effort at Piper this year. The Year 5

f an r 5.3 EWG FUELU E Students are in many ways isolated from the rest of the world but they are influenced by it and happen- ings on the national scene affected students and aroused their interest. The future was a major concern. We saw the resignation and pardon of a president for the first time. The talk of inflation along with the economic picture dominated their attention. Food and fuel short- ages, worldwide problems such as overpopulation, star- vation, and wars contributed to student worry. Drugs, grades, schoolwork, sex, athletics, traveling, and cars provided outlets for students to forget much of what they didn't care to know and didn't care to worry about. Most had a certain fear of the life after high school and what the future would be like. A life filled with trivia kept the student from thinking about the years ahead . . . getting a job or selecting a college or major. Students were concerned with grades, being admitted to college, handing in book reports and re- search papers, meeting deadlines, scoring two points, throwing the shot put further, skipping school, getting a job, ACT and PSAT scores or another day of typing. All of the concerns and activities play a vital part in our development for the future. The Future 7
