It is an educational in- stitution with an average curriculum that fits an average stu- dent. The population is divided between vocational and pre-college students. Piper is located in an area whose main industry is farming. Many consider high school a first step in their educational plans, while others regard the school as a completion of their formal education. Piper is a AA school of approximately 240 students and a faculty of fourteen. In athletics it is an independent school, but usually a winner. To the individual student only a part of this whole plays an ac- tive role in his life. Some approach school with enthusiasm, others with some interest, and still others with complete in- difference. If each 240 were questioned as to his particular view of the school, 240 different images would appear. These views of life at Piper, the problems, enjoyable aspects, and the students themselves make up an integral piece of the school. This is the story of the 1975 school year in Piper, Kansas .... the development of Piper. 4 The School ,ff Eisgkia 6 I F I YQ 'SQ if We .r Much of a student's time was spent on individual rather than school-related work. Jobs occupied a great deal of time and energy for many. School often received second priority in both studies and time. Thirty-three of the forty-three se- nior students left early from school for jobs and other related activities. Gasoline for student-owned cars became more and more expensive and everyday living expenses rose sharply during the year. An average date of a movie and a pizza cost a boy at least seven dollars. Although participation was light in athletics and organizations, it played an important role for the school-minded students. A booster club was formed by some active parents. For the first year girl's athletics thrived and the girls organized teams for track, golf, and volleyball. Student Council was kept running by a few students and teachers, accomplishing much more than in past years. Small cliques and little groups of friends tended to share interests and associate with each other. Because of the small popula- tion of students, anything out of the ordinary was known by every student in the school within a matter of minutes. In- dividual activities ran a close second to group effort at Piper this year. The Year 5 EPHIQ DEQIQLE The people at Piper can be classified into four main groups: jocks, rah-rahs, scholars, and teachers. A few students feel they are capable of all four, but for the most part every student can tit into one category. The student body is made up of 247 students that do everything from lighting off smoke bombs to winning scholarships. The student-teacher ratio is eighteen stu- dents to every teacher, which provides for a more per- sonal relationship with the teachers. Jocks can be identified by Piper Athletics shirts, Converse tennis shoes, and ties on game days. The rah-rahs are obvious. Hardly a clay goes by when some girl isn't wearing a cheerleader or pep club uniform, talking about a pep assembly, or flirting with the jocks. Now, the scholars are the ones that always sit in class, never cause trou- ble, and never fail to say after a test, I just know I flunked it , when everyone knows they will make an A , The teachers, in case you haven't noticed them this year, are the ones that stand or sit in front of class everyday and pour knowledge into our heads so that we will be prepared to confront the great big World outside of Piper when we graduate. But, it is by being around these different kinds of people that we learn and develop into what we will be in the future. 6 The People f an r 5.3 EWG FUELU E Students are in many ways isolated from the rest of the world but they are influenced by it and happen- ings on the national scene affected students and aroused their interest. The future was a major concern. We saw the resignation and pardon of a president for the first time. The talk of inflation along with the economic picture dominated their attention. Food and fuel short- ages, worldwide problems such as overpopulation, star- vation, and wars contributed to student worry. Drugs, grades, schoolwork, sex, athletics, traveling, and cars provided outlets for students to forget much of what they didn't care to know and didn't care to worry about. Most had a certain fear of the life after high school and what the future would be like. A life filled with trivia kept the student from thinking about the years ahead . . . getting a job or selecting a college or major. Students were concerned with grades, being admitted to college, handing in book reports and re- search papers, meeting deadlines, scoring two points, throwing the shot put further, skipping school, getting a job, ACT and PSAT scores or another day of typing. All of the concerns and activities play a vital part in our development for the future. The Future 7 QHIE EQH XIBE W WS Most of the traditional school activity was the same this year exceptg freshman no longer sat in the corner of the lunchroom where the seniors once did, the Annual Staff did not sponsor a dance because of lack of funds, and there was no bon-tire at Homecoming because it was feared that the Junior High would burn down. Other last- ing traditional events at Piper lived on and influenced each Piper graduate. Most seniors still went only half a day, in fact more than 8076 of the seniors were present less than six hours, Juniors reluctantly ran the concession stand and put on the Prom, team members still Wore ties on days of games, and purple and white-clad pep club members cheered on their team. Homecoming took place even though student participation was at a minimum. The school song was sung at every pep assembly, except one when the freshman cheerleaders forgot to start it, and the Pirateers performed faithfully at every home game. Tradi- tions at Piper are few but are always followed. 8 The Traditions 1 1 ' , T a 1 I 'T' ' 'fi' fi4i't.'- I 7, -. fs ' gl: Ii L ,, ' , an : '?'r:'-'fqleig . Jane Carpenter joins Gary Miller in a chant at the Pep Rally, Sandy Studyvin, Lisa Feden, and April Wiehe wait endlessly for the candidates to arrive. Various organizations contributed to the success of Homecoming 1974. The Spirit Rally Homecoming eve was a huge success as Coach Griffith led the student body through the mighty city of Piper. Victory yells were joyous and hearty. Candidates for Homecoming Queen were selected by the football team, and voted on by the student body the day of the big game. Pep Club and StuCo deserved a vote of ap- preciation for a week's labor on a float and preparations for the dance. Game night finally arrived with the feeling of anticipa- tion in the air. Between halves, the queen candidates walked through a Pep Club formation as the announcer called forth the name of Piper's Homecoming Queen for 1974 . . . Laura Bollinger. Rain failed to dampen Pirate spirit as they fought K.S.D. to the bitter end with a loss. Excited couples enjoyed the fabulous music of Air- borne between the hours of 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. on Sep- tember 28. But the excitement of the dance was only half the fun. Afterwards, many couples went out for a night on the town. The memory of Homecoming 1974 will not be easily forgotten by those who attended. Barer bodies, blatant skipping and sunburned faces were common. Summerlike weather made studying impossible and the anticipation of summer unbearable. Scenes and noises at Piper reminded students that school would soon be over. Sandals, soft breezes, students carrying reports to teachers, and seniors talking about colleges and summer plans signaled that the easy sheltered life at Piper was about to end for seniors and a long summer awaited un- derclassmen before beginning all over again. Teachers fought student laziness in the final weeks by dealing out endless blasts of homework. The juniors ran for Student Council and dreamt about next year, freshmen waited for the time when they could call somebody else fresh- man for a change, and seniors waited listessly for school to end. The news was still full of inflation, war and a nagging feeling that the energy crisis would return. Finally, the year ended amid awards, assemblies, electing of new cheerleaders and drill team members, the excited yet sad feelings of seniors and underclassmen, and the signing of yearbooks. The seniors came to commence- ment and disappeared. This was how we developed throughout the year.
