With the President ' s visit in June, followed by a visit from the Superbov l Champion Raiders in February, this had to be one of the most magical and exciting years in Pioneer ' s history. The students, staff, and parents can all be extremely proud of the school that became the President ' s choice and was identified as one of the finest in the country. It was a Titan team ef- fort that achieved such an awesome accomplishment. Our best wishes to graduating sen- iors for happiness and success in your futures. We hope that your exper- iences at Pioneer enriched your life and served to help you to continue to be a winner in the years ahead. Robert L. Principal Eicholtz Also pictured: L-R; Renee Savage, Shana PrechI, Cyndi Wade, Laura Buergo, Michele Blazer, Yolanda Lo- pez, Gabriela Buego, Ricky Zomarripa inest HoilfPresi Era Of Excellence Amidst the banners, the media, and roaring cheers. Pio- neer basked in triumph as President Ronald Reagan person- ally presented Principal Bob Eicholtz and Superintendent Ndrman Eisen the first of 72 High School Awards for Excel- lence in Education. In the packed auditorium, honor stu- dents wearing distinctive red Omega T-shirts, administra- tors, and teachers beamed proudly when Pioneer was commended with the prototype of the Excellence in Edu- cation flag and a bronze scroll plaque. In the early part of the assembly, held June 30, 1983, Mr. Eicholtz enjoyed the honor of a standing ovation as grand as though he were the president. The key to Pioneer ' s success has been the contributing efforts of the faculty, students, and parents, as well as the leadership of Mr. Eicholtz. Mr. Eicholtz once commented, Parent involvement is incredible. We wanted to build a chain link fence around the school; instead, the parents voluntarily put up a beautiful wrought iron fence. Dedica- tion, patience and concern are all blended into the Pioneer atmosphere. As quoted in the Whittier Daily News. We give them very strict policies with loads of love, and the students love it, social science teacher Mrs. Sandy Thor- stenson said. Those policies don ' t cost money, and love doesn ' t cost money. in perspective, the overall goal of Mr. Eicholtz and the faculty is for all students to leave Pioneer literate, responsi- ble and self-confident. Developing interpersonal skills and sportsmanship, which may be achieved through extra-cur- ricular activities, is also essential. In addition, counseling and career education guides students into making decisions and helps them to compete in the working world. As stated in the Whittier Daily News. Reagan heaped praise on Pioneer High School, recently named one of the outstanding secondary schools in the country. What I like about Pioneer is its pride. Teachers are proud of students, students are proud ' tpf teachers, both are proud of the principal and everyttijjjw is proud of the school itself. This pride creates a posiMfettitude for learning. After speaking to thlB||e crowd, Reagan took the time to visit with some studerflWfe spoke to Mr. Dan Garcia and his summer reading class. ib. ' ■%, ' Pioneer, because of its exemplcffy istotus, was selected by the Department of Education as the site for the Second Regional forum on the recommendation of the National Commission on Excellence in Education. . Pioneer ' s campus was just another orange grove. It has now worked its way to the top, becoming one of California ' s exemplary schools. It embodies the ideologies of courtesy, friendliness, and scholastic excel- lence, and these traditions still remain today. According to Dr. Haines, the school ' s second principal. Pioneer has always had a personal touch. People joined together in activities, assemblies, and conventions, and the humanistic factor played an important role in their successes. The staff was willing to try new things, but they didn ' t refuse to care. Pioneer wos built geared towards learning, and everything ' keeps getting bet- ter ' , but Dr. Haines admits that the human factor is most important to me. Pioneer has prospered as a result, based largely on the personal atmosphere, which is extinct in most schools. Mr, Jines, the first principal, surmises that Pioneer now shows a greater parent student motivation, has a fantastic faculty, a cleaner, more attractive campus, and greater interaction between parents, students, and teachers. In general, he feels Pioneer has more stability and a greater sense of pride - of course Pioneer has a great deal to be proud of. During the 1950 ' s, high schools were becoming overcrowded, due to the preceding ' Baby Boom ' . A new school became a necessity; thus, high school 6 was born. This school didn ' t have a name, mascott, or color, so a series of assemblies were held by the incoming students from Sierra, El Rancho, and Whittier to determine which would be chosen. We might very well be the Olympic Panthers now, or perhaps the American Titans may hove been better, but these students voted for the Pioneer Titans, a wise choice indeed. How about colors? They might today be maroon gold or cardinal white, but they chose black green, colors which are unique in our district. These were the original choices, and they have remained unchanged with the exception of adding white. In the fall of 1958, Pioneer High School officially opened its doors to 900 students and 50 staff members. The school was still under construction with only 40% of the buildings that stand today. Some buildings didn ' t have windows or doors; others had no lights. The gym and stadium weren ' t built yet, and for the first three months of school. Pioneer went without showers or locker rooms. Landscaping seemed sparse with the sprinkling of trees and shrubs which dotted the campus. Early in the morning on opening day, the school remained untouched with three inches of sawdust covering the barren dirt quad and desolate buildings. Gradually, the quad started to fill with students. The atmosphere was friendly, supportive, and a bit uneasy, but filled with a sense of pride. Pioneer was the new school in town and faced many challenges, but these challenges were confronted with grace and style - this was defi- nitely a school with class! The academic courses offered were basically the same, but emphasis was placed on physics, chemistry, and math. Languages were very popular, and Pioneer offered Spanish, French, German, and Latin, Band, Drill Team, and theatre arts were also popular. Boy ' s baseball and bas- ketball teams placed among the top of the league, and football drew much attention. Unfortunately, there was only one organized girl ' s sport- archery However, the lack of girl ' s sports was made up for with ' Hijinx ' , now known as Titanette Review, This major event was exclusively for girls, and boys were banned from direction, rehearsal, and performance! The past was, indeed, filled with many wonderful things. At present. Pioneer has received many awards honoring the school ' s academic and athletic achievements, and the future looks bright in continuing this tradition of excellence. These students believed in head- ing towards the future, not leaking back on the past. The Titan rocket was launched on the same day he Titan mascott was adopted, and this added to the ' feeling ' of becoming a school of the future; we choose to lead, not follow _ In his inaugural speech of 1961, John F, Kennedy addressed the nation: Let the word go forth: the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans. These pioneers grasped this torch and lighted the way to better things- 34 3 i_li3iw£to 35 DEDICATION Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until ttiey arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born. Anois Nin (1903-1977) French American Writer On behalf of the entire student body at Pioneer, the Annual Staff takes great pride in dedicating the 1984 Torch to a person who has opened up new worlds for so many people. This outstanding individual was born in Hastings, Nebraska and moved with her family to Long Beach, California when she was five years old. She attended Marymont Palis Verdes High School and then attended Co! State Long Beach. She did her graduate work at Loyola Marymont University and be- gan teaching in 1961. Her first teaching job was at North Junior High School in Downey. After North Junior High, she taught at Sierra High School. When Sierra closed in 1980 she came to Pioneer. Since coming to Pioneer, she has been actively involved in numerous activities. She has been in charge of the Omega School program from its beginning in 1980. She has coached Pioneer ' s Academic Decathalon Team for two years and has been involved in having Omega School students appear on the PBS television show Why In The World. To her students she is always very loving, caring and kind. She tries to show students that they ore special individuals and that they should be proud of their individuality. When not teaching or helping her stu- dents, this special person spends time with her husband, Jerry, and their five-year-old son, Keesy. She is involved in the Dutch Community Magazine, AVIO. She is a mem- ber of her church ' s sixty-voice choir and is involved in the Sunday school program. She lectures for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and participates in curriculum writing in the Whittier Union High School District Hon- ors Program. Mrs. Mary Kay Woudenberg represents an entire world in those who have known her. We are fortunate in having met her in a world possibly not born until she arrived. MARY KAY WOUDENBERG MRS. Not only were we successful financially but we have been successful in growing and maturing together. Our senior class has grown together for the last four years, developing special bonds that cannot be broken though we will go our separate ways. The friends we ' ve made at Pioneer will always be held dear to our hearts, as Pioneer itself will. Being students in such an outstanding school has given us on extra advantage over other high school seniors We, The Class of 1984, will be as awesome in our future lives as we have been at Pioneer High School. On Friday, December 16, viewed by an appreciative audi- ence, actors projected a variety of interesting people who were each vying for a role in a make-believe, up-coming stage production. The director, exuding a blend of audacious authority and bored cynicism, critically surveyed every audition. Bringing real- istic depth and emotion to their cameos, the students cap- tured their audience and kept them wishing for more. Young and fresh is the way one could describe the 1983- 84 Varsity Yell Leaders, In spite of having only two returning members, and only one being a senior, they managed to sweep Hibbard ' s Camp by taking three first place awards. Throughout the year their spirit and enthusiasm never let down. They cheered at various sports events and per- formed in assemblies and pep rallies. Whether striving to uphold their winning tradition or cheer the teams on to victory this seven member squad never let go of our Titan Pride, VARSITY SONG The 83-84 varsity song leaders had a very active and successful year. Led by Gina ValVerde and Tina Bird the squad cheered for sporting events and performed for as- semblies and other activities. Aside from this the song leaders attended cheerleading competions. They took first place at Jam- boree, an accomplishment that hadn ' t been achieved in many years, and were anxiously av oiting the Southern California Cheerleading Competition. This squad has kept up the reputation of Pioneer that makes Titans proud. f l K I H mS i . Tina Bird M AHEAD OF THEIR TIME 83-84 VARSITY FLAG The Varsity Flagsters started their year by practicing all summer. Their practice paid oft when they re- ceived 3rd place at Hibbards Cheerleading Camp. When the 1983-84 school year started, the flagsters ' spirit was seen supporting many sports and school related ac- tivities. At the competitions that they have attended, the judges complimented their routing highly and scored it very generously. They like to refer to themselves as the FLAGSISTERS because they have grown closer to each other thr ough cheering and twirling did Merino TREASURED MOMENTS The sensational 1983-84 Junior Varsity Leaders are nothing less than fantastic! At summer camp the J.V, Yell took third place. These young ladies helped to strike up the spirits for our junior varsity teams and in assemblies they really made us cheer. The squad was superb on every occasion. These energetic girls ore a compliment to our school! TIME FOR FUN The 1983-84 Freshman Yell Leaders vere a determined, tenacious group and it all paid oft! We are as- ured of remaining Number One, with jirls like these! TIME IS GIVING THE BAND THE EDGE The Mighty Pioneer Titan Band has put in many hours ot practice and hard work this year. Thursday night practices as well as many hours of studying and memorizing music has paid off in fine perfor- mances, discipline, and pride. The band has per- formed at various parades in Artesia, Santa Ana, West Arcadia, Chino, Whittier and Oceanside vvhere they scored 92,1 out of 100. The band ' s fu- ture looks even more promising than it does now, since most of it ' s members are first year students. In a year or so these members will have the exper- ience to move this band up to the zenith of perfec- tion. But only time will give the band the edge. Low Brass (UoU) K. Shields. S Leger. W i :r 149 Titan basketball had a fine season with a 7-7 record in league and 11-11 overall. Although they lost 7 games in league, 6 of them were lost by less than 5 points. During pre-season, they won consolation champs at the Valley Christian Tournament and third at the Pioneer Tourna- ment. The Titans always played a very challenging and exciting game, which showed in their last victory against El Rancho. This win knocked the Dons out of post-season play. After this game, the team ended the season on a high note, by cutting down the net and lighting the torch. Pioneer had many talented players including Frank Rivas and Tom Michael, who each made all-league. Another potential all-league player, Phil Porras, was sidelined in the second league game. Though this year ' s team had the talent it lacked consistent play. The Titans should be a top contender next year, with 6 returning play- ers, including 3 starters. Coach Espinoza was quite pleased with this years team, espe- cially with the enthusiasm shown by all the players. V 4 3 LADY TITANS The 1983-84 Girls Varsity Basketball season ended on o positive note with a 74-24 victory over El Rancho This gave the team an 8-6 league record and a share of fourth place. The team ' s overall record was 13-10. This year ' s team has been on a rollercoaster season, hitting highs and lows along the way, but never really main- taining any consistency. The girls worked extremely hard to blend the juniors and seniors together as a unit, but just fell short. The high point was defeating Diamond Bar with the team ' s best effort of the year 53-34, winning the Consola- tion Championship Trophy. The low point was finishing fourth in league and not qualifying for the C.I.F. playoffs by just one game after finishing the first round of league with a 5-2 record and a share of second. This year ' s team can be very proud of their efforts since 9 to 10 losses were to teams that made the C.I.F. Play-offs, said Coach Bergenthal. Joann Krohn and Linda French made the All-Tournament teams in the Gahr and Wilson Tournaments, respectively. At the time of publication, the girls selected for the All-League Team were not announced. If - VICE-PRINCIPALS The Administrative Staff at Pioneer High School has been of great help to the students and faculty. Due to proposed budget cuts in August, the school was forced to go on a five period day instead of six. But they were able to imple- ment a schedule which included an A and Z period to facilitate students ' meeting their requirements, while allow- ing time for extra-curricular activities. Such activities includ- ed Drill Team, Pepsters, News Staff, Annual Staff, and Sports. Thanks to Mr. R. Torres, Business and Activities, Mr. J.C. Low, Curriculum, and Mr. D. Rock, Guidance, the 1983-1984 year has been a dynamic and prosperous one. TnpJHi We are really fortunate to have such a dedicated coun- seling staff. They are there willing to help with any problem that may appear. This year they took on the challenge of the variables of A and Z periods. 224 Special Services Special Services meets the student ' s needs thiat can ' t be met in ttie classroom. Yet it ' s not just the end ot an- KLy other year and this is not just another annual. It ' s a very special yearbook for the senior class because it is our last one at Pioneer. We also commemorate the school ' s Silver Anniversary. As the clock ticks ov oy, our graduation has finally arrived. You might be saying to yourself, It ' s about time! , but think for a second: hasn ' t it all been worthwhile? Haven ' t we united in friendships that will last us a lifetime? Although we are now looking forward to what life holds in store; look back, for a second or two, at these unforgettable past four years. Try to think back in time ... to September, 1980. It ' s the first day of school and boy are you nervous! There is a strange feeling about this inviting yet unfamiliar atmo- sphere. You look around hoping to find a familiar face. You find yourself amidst a crowd, asking yourself, Who are these weirdos with the cowboy hats and dyed ducktails? But it doesn ' t take too long to acquaint yourself with these new found friends. Hey, you ' re fitting in! The year rushes by and we ' re listening to the sound of Styx, Devo, and Blondie. Remember how we suffered through cafeteria food day in and day ou t for an entire year? Girls, remember finding yourself with eyes wide open as the Drill Team strutted and maneuvered through Another Cha Cha not realizing that by the end of the year you were going to be a Titanette! After getting trash canned and all the other good things that come along with being freshmen, we somehow man- aged to make it to our sophomore year. We were no longer either QV or OP, like our freshman year; everybody was now GQ. Yes, everybody was preppy, wearing funny little animal shirts and the designer jeans that had the look. And who con forget the, grodie to the max, Valley Girl craze, those troublesome egg babies, and our first driver ' s license. But as we glided through our junior year, we got into more heavy stuff like E.T., MV3, and the Stray Cats. Valley Girls were now Buffalo Gals as tables turned and dancing was in again. There were some very special moments, too. Many of us were getting our own car and our first Varsity letter. Drill Team received Sweepstakes at Jamboree, Flagsters took first at Miss Drill Team USA, and our wrestling team deafeated Santa Fe for the league title. We received a special visit from Richard Blade as he D.J. ' ed our first KROQ dance. We also started on our journey to becoming one of the exemplary schools in the nation, which culminated with a visit from President Reagan; what an honor! What a way to end our junior year and what a great way to begin our senior year! Our senior year we blew everyone away! We were hot! Homecoming week was outrageous! Remember that late Thursday night when we came and bombarded the school with toilet paper and plastered up wall to wall posters? Furthermore, it was all done In a clean and fun way with no destruction to our campus. We then set up our own senior section and wore our prestigious hats and shades. At the assembly we waited anxiously for the winners of the spirit chain. In fourth place ... the freshmen, in third place the sophomores, well. It ' s either the juniors or us! In second place ... the juniors! Wow, we beat them! (And by a mile, too!) The year was just one fantastic moment after another. All the frenzied and frantic work paid off at the Academic Decathalon as we swept away 7 awards. Our volleyball team took the league championship for the first time! Pep- sters dominated the Magic Mountain competition again, taking 2nd place. In the past four years they have taken the championship twice, and never won less than second place. And Drill Team was invited to perform at this year ' s summer Olympics! There was the exciti ng music of macho men Michael Jackson and Boy George and the ultra femi- nine Annie Lennox, the new British Invasion, funk, videos, and break dancing. Flashdance and mod fashions were the latest rave as we catapulted through a year of wild and outrageous fads. Although it was a year to remember it could have been far better had one of our finest teachers not fallen ill. Mr. Robert Spindola, a kind and caring person, had to take a year ' s leave due to a serious illness. Pioneer wishes the best of luck to Mr. Spindola and looks forward to his return next fall. As the year comes to a close now, and we, the awe- some class of 1984, prepare for departure, we shed a tear for all the good times we ' ve had and all that we ' ve been through. Through all our mad escapades, from class calls to protests for senior privileges, we ' ve always kept ourselves in a close huddle, never allowing anything to interfere with our unity. As from a deep sleep we awaken now from what seems only a far away dream where the biggest worries were who to ask to the Prom and hoping you ' ll get to class on time. Yet it was all real and we all went through it together. All these treasured moments ore over, yet they still live on between the pages of this annual; the corner- stone of your memories.
