Born in Detroit, Michigan, he moved with his family to Tucson and attended high school there. He graduated from the Univer- sity of Arizona with a BA in Biology. Then it was on to UCLA and USC for his graduate work. After attaining his Masters degree at Long Beach State, he came to Whittier in 1954, where he taught 8th grade at South Whittier Jr. High. When Sierra opened in 1957, he went there and began to teach science. He became department chairperson and later, curricu- lum coordinator. Apparently enjoying the job of curriculum coordinator, he then became Assistant Principal of Curriculum at Monte Vista. After holding this job for several years, he then moved back to Sierra and became the Principal for four years, until its closing in 1 979. As busy as this man has been, he had time to raise a wonderful family. His family includes a married daughter, who is a teacher; twin sons, one a business major, the other a speech pathology audiology major; and another daughter, who is a freshman at Cal-State Fullerton. Ever since he stepped foot on Pioneer ' s campus to be our new Principal, everyone and everything on it seems to have a renewed and upbeat feeling. The kids love him because he takes the time to get to know each of them personally. The faculty enjoys him because of the jokes he tells them during the early-morning faculty meetings. For bringing all the newness, warmth and love to our campus and for being a caring and understanding man, the 1980 TORCH is dedicated to . . . Robert L. Leading the way for the Titans were juniors Ignacio Trejo and Pete Molina. These two defensive stalwarts did an excellent |ob of stopping offensive attacks by opposing teams. The offensive punch was provided by a talented and well-coordinated front line consisting of Eddie Trejo, George Casillas, Alex Vieyra and German Ledesma. FACULTY V 220 221 District Leadership After the District Administrators and Board of Trustees decided to close two schools last year they worked to create a feasible plan for student relocation, bussing sched- ules, and teacher reassignments. The reports they have received state that relocated students have adjusted well to their new schools, and each campus is running smoothly. In addition to preparing the new reassignment plan, the Board of Trustees decided to offer seven acres of property on the Cal Hi campus for 130.000 per acre. The district administrative offices were also offered for sale, since they are tena- tively scheduled to move to the Sierra Central Campus. Last November, Roy Salas was newly elected as a Board of Trustee member. Top row — Henri Pellissier. clerk. Earle Fisher. Assl. Superintendent, 2nd row — Nolin Seabron. Asst. Wr -i 222 This Is Just the Beginning Exclaims New Principal Mr. Eicholtz At the Welcome Assembly in September. 1 stated that Pioneer is a very fine school, but that we wouldn ' t be satisfied until Pioneer is considered the best school in the community. In the opinion of many. Pioneer has taken giant strides in that direction. Let ' s list some of the reasons why we can feel a sense of pride in our accomplishments. Through your efforts. Pioneer is now considered the cleanest campus in the community, and we have the second best attendance record in the District. Grade reports from colleges show that our graduates compete very well with graduates from other high schools in California. In addition, we receive more than our share of scholarships. Our special programs (Title 1, Expanded Hori- zons. School Improvement, Special Education, Remedial Reading, and Indi- vidualized Math) are helping to bnng all students up to or to exceed grade level m reading, math, and language. Pioneer, for example, has more than doubled the number of students in the math program in comparison to last year. The college counseling program is increasing annually the number of Pioneer students who consider college as an option. Last year — and I ' m sure again this year — Pioneer will be named the most outstanding school in athletics as determined by the Daily News sports writ- ers. I don ' t have to extol the abilities of the Band, Drill Team, Pepsters; they are outstanding. In addition. Pioneer enjoys tremendous support from par- ents through their participation in the Booster Club, PTA, Band Bcxisters, Drill Team Boosters, and other parent support groups. Pioneer has experienced virtually no violence on campus this year; and the fnendliness and dedication of our student body is not surpassed by any other school in the community. This is one of the strong reasons why the Sierra and Pioneer student bodies have fused into such an outstanding team for the ben- efit of the school. The spint of cooperation is reflected, not only on the cam- pus, but in the student government. I ' m very impressed with leadership that has been provided by the joint Pioneer-Sierra cabinet members and their abil- ity to work together in the best interest of the school. In addition, students ' reaction to the Pioneer staff (including secretaries and custodians) and the additions from Sierra and Monte Vista has been pos- itive. We have an outstanding teaching staff that cares about students and is willing to coach, serve as club advisors, supervise, work with students and parents, and go the extra mile to make this a great school. We have and will continue to increase the number of Spanish speaking staff members at Pio- neer. The Conversational Spanish Course that is now offered to all interested teachers is an attempt to build understanding between teachers, students, and parents Tills IS just the beginning! With the painting of all the buildings, lockers, and gyms next summer, the replacement of all old shrubs with new, and the new air conditioning, we will have a beautiful place to spend our days. 1 hope all of you share my enthusiasm for the future. Pat yourselves on the back! We are well on the way to reaching our objec- tive of being THE BEST! Let ' s continue working as a team to make this objective a reality. My very best wishes to our graduates for success and happiness in the future. 223 Administrators Strive for Excellence The Administrative staff at Pioneer is involved with almost ever nuance of campus life. Mr. Dick Torres coordinates all student activities and business matters. Guidance is headed b Mr. Del Rock, who came from Sierra High School. Mr. J. C. Low. formerly Asst. Principal of Guidance, now coordinates all classes and directs the student pro- gram in Curriculum. The administrators work behind-the-scenes to keep a sense of unity and progress at Pioneer High. The campus is always well kept due to their constant efforts to keep the school and shrubbery clean. In addition to keeping the school grounds clean, they also help students set up equipment for various activities. Mario Men- dez. who came from the Sierra campus, is now plant foreman. The Cafeteria crew is run efficiently by Mrs. Beverly Newell, who has been the manager of the crew for three years. 1 hey work hard at preparing meals and snacks for students. Elizabeth Fowler and John Cavataio are very important members of the campus crew. The Girls and Boys ' locker rooms are run smoothly by them, and they are always willing to lend students a helping hand. Opposite page, top left photo — Jesse Bustamante.
