The year is 1979. The year that the Pioneer Titan Soccer Team would achieve the ultimate goal in high school athletic competition, a CIF championship crown. Under the direction of third year head coach Mario Muniz. and an estabhshed and reputable soccer program, the Titans emerged as the premier team of 1979 in the 3-A division. 1979 was also the year that one of the most fascinating prep soccer careers came to an exciting end. Anthony Carrillo, a four year varsity letterman. four year All-leaguer, two year All-league MVP. two year All-CIF 1st Team, was named by the Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation as the Most Valuable Soccer Player in 3-A CIF Southern Section. Carrillo finished his prep career with 138 career goals, second all lime, and most goals in a single game (11) against Bassett High School. The year was also one that brought much honor and recognition to Pioneer, as seven members were named to the All Whitmont League teams. 1st team .Anthony Carrillo, Juan Duarte, Armando Carrillo and Ernest Ferrel. 2nd team Mike Germer, Ben Perez, and Ralph Duran. In addition, five Titans were named to the All CIF 3-A teams. 1st team Antonio Carrillo, MVP, Juan Duarte, and 2nd team Armando Carrillo, Ernesto Ferrel, and Ben Perez. Also honored by the Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation was Titan coach, Mario Muniz, who was voted by the Southern California Soccer Coaches Association as 1979 Coach of the year. It appeared as though the entire league was out to avenge the Titans for running away with the title a year ago, but the Titans ran away with their second consecutive title with a record of 9 wins and I loss. CIF — ROUND I Loyola was defeated by the Titans 4-2. They were unable to stop the speed and agility of the Titan o ffense. ROUND 2 In round 2. the Titan team met a revengeful Walnut team. The players demonstrated tremendous balance by scoring 5 goals, each by a different player, as the Titans went on to win 5-2 and advance to the quarter-finals. QUARTER FINALS Pioneer traveled to the San Fernando Valley to meet undefeated Alemany High School. Titan defense held Alemany scoreless. Jose Duarte scored both goals as the Titans won 2-0. SEMI-FINALS The Titans then came up against the defending CIF champions, Calexico. Although the underdogs, the Titans defeated Calexico 3-2 in a very exciting game thai went into sudden death after two scoreless overtimes. The winning goal was scored by Tony Carrillo. FINALS Finally, the Titans traveled to Chapman College for the championship game against Kennedy. The Titans held off the Fighting Irish in the first half and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tony Carrillo. In the second half the Titans maintained their composure and turned Kennedy away empty handed. The game ended, and the Titans were the new CIF Champions! FROSH-SOPH Superior team play enabled this years F S soccer team to wind up with a 10-3 season record and share the championship with Montebello. Although a relatively young team, the Titans made up for the lack of experience by utilizing a very together style of soccer, which befuddled and outscored their opponents 31-16. The offensive punch was led by freshman sensation, Eddie Trejo, who accounted for 21 of the Titan 31 goals. The F S squad is highly respected by coach Carlos Casillas for sticking it out and showing a great desire to excel as teammates and soccer players. TITAN SOCCER TAKES

Basketball Leaps High in League Competition This year ' s Fresh-Soph Team started league play with high hopes after finishing a disappointing pre-season. Even though the team finished with a 5-9 league record they were very competitive in every game until the final moments. This year ' s team had a tremendous attitude and showed they were vastly improved by the season ' s end. only losing to undefeated league cham- pion Sierra by 5 points. The team was led all year by the outstanding play of team captain Ricardo Garcia. The highlites of the year were big victories over highly regarded La Serna and Calhi.
