Born and raised on a farm in Kentuclcy, he went on to attend the University of Ken- tucky, where he majored in English. After graduation, he remained in his home state to teach, but later went West , and even- tually found himself teaching in California — in the El Rancho Unified School Dis- trict. Soon after, however, he heard Pio- neer calling, and has since then been our school librarian. And what a wonderful person he is! He never misses work, yet he still has time to fully enjoy life. He and his wife Betty share their home with their beautiful Schnauzer, Greta, and five cats, though he is always willing to take in a needy stray. He has a great interest in sports and has ushered several USC football games. Also, he is crazy about crossword puzzles, especially those from the New York Times, and his home-grown roses are said to be simply exquisite For being our devoted librarian, and well, for just sharing his humor and bril- liance, the 1979 TORCH is dedicated to our friend . . . TTie 1978 Cross Country team proved to be one of the toughest groups of men and women. The team worked hard all season in order to perform well for the spectators. Early in the season the Titans started to grab hold of their strong season record of 8-1 for the Varsity. only losmg to Montebello, and 8-0 for the Frosh-Soph. The Varsity runners easily took a second place in the Whitmont League then advanced on to C.I.F. where they finished off the season taking a strong sixth place. In C.I.F.. both Eddie and Frank Guzman were selected for first and second teams All League. It was the first time that our team had qualified for finals and it was especially gratifying to place so highly. This year ' s team improved more than any other team I have ever coached, states head coach Tom Castro. Leading the team were senior captain Eddie Guzman. James Gutierrez, junior captain. John Gutierrez, John Garcia, and sophomores Frank Guzman. Felipe Lugo, and Manuel Garcia. Also helping out the Varsity team were freshmen, Alfred Salas and Roman Cota. Prospects for next year are good, with returning lettermen Frank Guzman, John Gutierrez, Felipe Lugo, Alfred Salas. John Garcia. Manuel Garcia, and Roman Cota. Along with the Frosh-Soph Co-Champions, led by David Hernandez, Kenneth Martinez, and Arnold Yniguez. The Frosh-Soph team surprised their spectators while performing in dual meets and invitationals. This was the year for the Frosh- Soph as they wiped out every team which came within its path and marked an impressive 8-0 record for the season. When the season came down to League Finals, this was not enough to tire out the team as they had to settle for Co-Champions, tieing with Santa Fe. At the .Mt. CIF — ROUND I Loyola was defeated by the Titans 4-2. They were unable to stop the speed and agility of the Titan o ffense. ROUND 2 In round 2. the Titan team met a revengeful Walnut team. The players demonstrated tremendous balance by scoring 5 goals, each by a different player, as the Titans went on to win 5-2 and advance to the quarter-finals. QUARTER FINALS Pioneer traveled to the San Fernando Valley to meet undefeated Alemany High School. Titan defense held Alemany scoreless. Jose Duarte scored both goals as the Titans won 2-0. FINALS Finally, the Titans traveled to Chapman College for the championship game against Kennedy. The Titans held off the Fighting Irish in the first half and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tony Carrillo. In the second half the Titans maintained their composure and turned Kennedy away empty handed. The game ended, and the Titans were the new CIF Champions! FROSH-SOPH Superior team play enabled this years F S soccer team to wind up with a 10-3 season record and share the championship with Montebello. Although a relatively young team, the Titans made up for the lack of experience by utilizing a very together style of soccer, which befuddled and outscored their opponents 31-16. The offensive punch was led by freshman sensation, Eddie Trejo, who accounted for 21 of the Titan 31 goals. The F S squad is highly respected by coach Carlos Casillas for sticking it out and showing a great desire to excel as teammates and soccer players. The trustees searched for a closure plan that would disturb the fewest number of students yet let them go to the high school nearest their homes. Fifteen other criterias for selecting the 2 schools were: Ethnic and socio-economic balance, number of students displaced, cost of operation, rehabilita- tion potential, geographical placement, commu- nity support, gang strife, busing required, age of school, and the cohesiveness of the school and community. At a meeting held on Feb. 1, at Whittier Audito- rium, each of the trustees took time to explain to the audience the reasoning behind his or her vote, and named his choice of schools to close. Sierra and Monte Vista High Schools were the two schools recommended by the District Trustees to close, and it passed by a 4-1 vote. John Lauritzen voted instead to close Pioneer and La Serna High Schools saying that racial balance should be the overriding factor in a closure decision. But closing Monte Vista and Sierra improved the ethnic bal- ance of the district enough to satisfy any state or federal requirements. New attendance boundaries were also estab- lished at this meeting. This page — Top Row — Henri Pellissier, clerk, Earle Fisher, Asst. Superintendent. 2nd row — Nolin Seabron, Asst. Super- intendent. ' ' â– â– tiV! mm Always Proud to Be a Titan Come Sail Away is an appropriate theme for this year. Pioneer is completing its twentieth year of operation — an appropriate time to think of the many graduates who have sailed away from our school to all parts of the world and entered into every possible occu- pation. This has been an exciting year, with a great deal of apprehension about the possible closing of Pioneer. The Board of Trustees decided, however, to close Sierra and Monte Vista instead. Each of you should remember how Pioneer parents and students rallied together in support of their school. Certainly these efforts were influential in helping keep Pioneer open. The Pioneer student body will change next year with about one- fourth of the students coming from the Sierra area; and it will not be long until the newcomers have become a smooth part of the Titan machine. Pioneer will be having a new Principal next year; and there will, no doubt, be some changes made. I found that a principal can be a big influence on the attitude, environment, and program of a school. I have been very proud to have the opportunity, during the last nine years, to use my educational experience for leadership in this position. At the end of this year, I, too, will sail away with the Pioneer graduates and take on different responsibilities in education. My twenty years at Pioneer have been very exciting, the heart of my productive life in education. We give and we get from every situa- tion in our lives. I have given a great deal of my life to Pioneer, but 1 have received much in return from the vibrant, friendly, active stu- dents and the positive, supportive parents. To all of you, I say Thank you! And my very best to you always! Wherever I go, and whatever I do, I am always proud to be a Titan! Administrators Express Pride in School ' s Achievement The Administration Staff at Pioneer High School main- tained almost every aspect of campus hfe. Mr. Torres coordinates ail student activities and business affairs. Guidance is headed by Mr. Low who handles all mat- ters concerning student counseling. Mr. Kimmick, in curricu- lum, supervises the class schedules, and directs the student teacher program on campus. The administrators work behind-the-scenes to keep a sense of unity and progress on the PiHi campus. Our staff consists of: Top right photo — Dick Torres — Asst. Principal of Business and Activities. They constantly strive to keep our school and shrubbery looking clean, and always set up the needed equipment for the various activities. Domingo Rodriquez is doing an excellent job in his first year as plant foreman. The cafeteria crew is run smoothly by Mrs. Beverly Neeveel in her second year as manager. They work hard at preparing hot meals and snacks that the stu- dents can enjoy. Elizabeth Fowler and Tony Luna are always meet- ing the needs of students in the Girl ' s and Boy ' s locker rooms. They are an important part of the cam- pus crew. Our three campus aids help the attendance office considerably by making sure students attend class, and by supervising the activities on the school cam- pus.
