And that all Somedays Eventually become Realities. -Susan Conn Music To Our Ears The Music Department worked hard to produce mu- sic for the enjoyment of people. The Band partici- pated and ranked high in many contests. Along with the Band, the Choir held their annual Spring and Christmas concerts. They also per- formed for various organiza- tions in surrounding com- munities. Upper left: Deb, Trena, and Scott know a serious song requires a straight face. Around the World In addition to Spanish, Pio- neer acquired two new classes in the Foreign Lan- guage Department this year; French and German. All three classes made and sampled foods from their own coun- tries. Students in Spanish class celebrated Pan American Week by making displays and projects, singing, and pre- paring foods. Photographs and Memories The Senior Publications class worked hard this year to meet its deadlines, striving to make the Pioneer Conestoga better than ever. Color was added to the yearbook, along with a larger staff. The high- light of the year for the year- book staff was going to a Rock Concert at Purdue. Yearbook staff members are: G. Houston, G. Downey. Detailed Parts ... This year the English De- partment gave the Juniors an opportunity to try the Mini- Courses which were offered to the Seniors last year. Some of these courses were Black Literature, Supernatural, Poet's World, and Vocabu- lary. The students in Speech class took turns in giving the announcements again this year. The name of the school newspaper was changed to the Razmanaz. Upper Right: Mrs. Courtice helps Mike and Allen decide whether there are ghosts or not. Of Our Language Left: Alicia peeks over her shoulder in Mrs. Patty's English class. Lower Left: The students in Mrs. Patty's class are racking their brains to produce a good grade on the test. Lower: Denny smiles to make learning English a little easier. Observing the Past ... This year the History De- partment tried team teaching in the U.S. History class. Once again, Mr. Neel did a terrific job with the Seniors in Govt., Psych., and Sem. Re- search. Mr. Church again in- formed his World Hist, class of what happened long ago and in his Current Prob. class he informed them of what is happening now. This year the U.S. Hist, and Govt, classes practiced the use of a voting machine. Right: To learn the way the country is run, the students in Economics class work hard. And Present Left: Kurt is working another hour in the Library on his Seminar Research project. Lower Left: In World His- tory, the students gathered in groups to discuss the world happenings. Lower: Sandy listens intently to Mr. Church. Business Minded The Business Department consisted of Typing I, Typing II, Shorthand I, Accounting, Sec. Training, and Gen. Busi- ness this year. Typing I learned the basics in typing letters and building up speed. Typing II, Sec. Training, and Shorthand classes learned many things to ready them in becoming a Secretary. Ac- counting and Gen. Business learned the aspects of dealing in everyday business. Right: Keith keeps his eyes on the book in Typing I. Center: At the end of the period, the students in Book- keeping get time to finish their as- signments. Lower Left: Deb writes fast as she copies a letter out of the Shorthand book. Lower Right: Lynn studies her book in Bookkeeping. Students Keeping Physically Fit The Gym Department kept many students physically fit again this year. The students played different games such as Baseball, Basketball, Foot- ball, Tennis, Hockey, Golf, Badminton, Dodgeball, Vol- leyball, Gymnastics, and many more. All of these games are preceded by exer- cises. Many times, in order for the students to learn the cor- rect rules, they have tests to follow the fun. Building Skills The Industrial Arts Depart- ment offered courses that taught students to make themselves useful around the house. Those students who carried on in the field of In- dustrial Arts developed their skills even further, enabling them to become such things as building designers, elec- tricians, welders, and mechanics. Forming the Basics of Math The Math department worked hard to form the bas- ics of math. In the classes, the students learned to draw tri- angles, to understand tri- gonometry, and to work complex problems. As in past years, our students placed high in the Math contests. The high scorers were Rick Cray, Jeff Keiser, and Charles Tribbett in Comprehensive Math, Algebra II, and Geometry. Above: Scott computes one of the many hard problems in Senior Math. Right: Mr. Ritter shows the class how to figure problems that seem to be impossible. 26 A World of Exploring The Science department consisted of Lab Science, Bi- ology, Chemistry, and Physics again this year. In Lab Science, the students learned the basics in Biology, Chem- istry, and Physics to help them in their coming years if they decide to expand their knowledge in the Sciences. In these classes, the students perform experiments and have labs to prove theories. Upper Left: Mr. Flowers shows Rob the ways in which the problem works. Lower Right: Julie, Deb, and Kelly are fixing up a tasty meal!?! The art classes proceeded in molding many ideas which were created by the students. In preparation for the musi- cal, Irene, the art students painted and designed the patterns on the flats. Again this year, the students painted, made clay objects, made rugs and many other things. In the first years of art, the students learned how to coordinate the colors on the color wheel. Upper Right: Kellie is showing her ability as an artist. Right: Many students take their time in preparing their works of art. 28 Molding Ideas Preparing for Future Life The students in the Home Ec. department learned how to prepare for future life. For one week, the Human Devel- opment class had children from all ages come in to be observed by the students. In Housing, the students left the school during the day to eval- uate different houses of this area. There they got many ideas for their future homes. The teachers had a very busy year. Left: Darlene smiles as she demonstrates her sewing ability. 29 On the Job Training The Vocational Depart- ment consisted of Construc- tion, Auto-body, Mechanical Repair, Food Services, Nurs- ing, and Welding again this year. These courses provided on-the-job training for many of our students. This will en- able them to prepare for fu- ture careers in the many areas of the Vocational School. Teachers of the Future This year several Seniors, both boys and girls, went to the grade school at different times during the day to Cadet Teach in different grades. This gave the Seniors a chance to experience what it would be like if they chose the field of Education. The Cadet Teach- ers also helped the teachers with their students. The candidates were chosen by several clubs and the winners were chosen by the basket- ball players. One of the wres- tling team members, Randy Lower, achieved high goals. Fox. They defend Irene against all intruders into her Ninth Avenue world. Salt and Sweetness .. This year the Musical and Drama Department put on the Musical Irene. It was about a woman piano tuner, Irene, who met the wealthy bachelor, Donald Marshall. Donald was intrigued by Irene, and she, captivated by him. It was full of music, laughter, and love. The juniors worked hard to make this a Prom for the class of '77 to remember. The Cavaliers played a variety of songs that everyone en- joyed dancing to. The after- Prom was held at Bowlmor with refreshments fixed by class parents. It was a fun time for all. In addition, they held their annual induction of new members, and acted as ush- ers at the school musical. In the first game, the Seniors beat the Freshmen and the Juniors beat the Sophomores. They had many con- vocations, one of which fea- tured the religious rock group Selah. They had a Spirit Week again this year in which Jane Glaser won Best Dressed Cartoon Character. Home Makers of Tomorrow The Senior High FHA had an active year. At the begin- ning of the year, they had a pizza party and made boxes for Servicemen. The also sold candy, which was a very suc- cessful project. With the money from the candy sales, they went out to eat at the Morris Bryant Smorgasbord in Lafayette. Their many activities included ring- ing bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas, a trip to Chicago, and parties for the patients at Longcliff. Lower Right: Carmina and Dudley pose a second time for pictures at the Sweethearts Ball. 45 Creative Techniques The Art Club started the year off by selling stationery, Christmas candles, and candy to raise money. In April, they went swimming at the Lo- gansport High School Pool and ate steak afterwards. To end the year, the Art Club traveled to Indianapolis to tour the Art Museum. They raffled off a turkey and had an auction in which the students were paid to work for the people around the community. Key Club Honored The Key Club did a very good job in raising money for Muscular Dystrophy. The members raised the most money in our area, therefore, they received a trophy. NHS Initiates Five National Honor Society sponsored cake raffles at most of the home basketball games this year. At the begin- ning of the year, they went out to eat at Morris Bryant in Lafayette. In 1941, Mr. Gibbs started his teaching career at Little jeff High School as the High School Sports Coach and Business Education teacher. From Little Jeff, he moved to Thorntown High School, where he became the High School Principal. He remained at Thorn- town High School for 12 years. For the following ten years, Mr. Gibbs was the Superintendent of Schools. After being Superintendent of Schools, he became the Principal of the Pioneer Elementary School. Four years later, Mr. Gibbs came to Pioneer Jr.-Sr. High School to teach. He stayed at Pio- neer for one year as the Business Education teacher. This was the first year for the election of five cheerleaders. The girls went to several different camps throughout the state, one of which was the 4-H State Fair. By a one point victory, the juniors defeated the seniors in the class Bas- ketball tourney. In order to raise money for the 1977 Ju- nior Senior Prom, the juniors held a bake sale and spent many hours selling light bulbs. Junior High Football New at Pioneer This year was a first for many things at Pioneer: New teachers, new classes, and new clubs. But the most ex- citing was a new sport, Foot- ball. It started with the Jr. High grades. They did very well with a record of 4-2-1 for the 8th grade and a record of 4-2-1 for the 7th grade. Sev- eral people served as coaches for this new sport. EARL E. SNIDER April 25, 1917-November 3, 1976 Earl E. Snider was the only coach in Delaware County his- tory to coach five county championship teams. Mr. Snider's basketball coaching career spanned 26 years. During this time his teams recorded a .773 winning per- centage, winning 425 games and losing 124. He led Selma to three straight Delaware County titles in 1944-45-46, then moved to Yorktown where he coached back-to-back county championship teams in 1954-55. Mr. Snider started his career at Clarksburg in 1940. After one season, he came to Selma, where he coached for nine seasons, winning the three county titles. From Selma, Mr. Snider went to Franklin Township, south- east of Indianapolis, for one season, returning to take the bas- ketball coaching job at Yorktown. He remained at Yorktown for 11 seasons, eight as basketball coach and three as athletic director. The final five years of Mr. Snider's coaching career were spent at Daleville. In addition to basketball, Mr. Snider was also a successful baseball, track, and cross-country coach. He served as presi- dent of the Delaware County Basketball Coaches Association for several years. Born in Hamilton, Ohio, Mr. Snider played on the 1935 state finalist team at Shelbyville. He received his BS degree from Central Normal College in Danville and played on the Central Normal team that participated in the 1936 Olympic Trials. Mr. Snider received his master's degree from Ball State University. In 1968, Mr. Snider was an unsuccessful Republican candi- date for county commissioner from the First District. He had also worked at Delco, Warner Gear and Warner Machine, the county and state highway departments, and had been an assessor. Mr. Snider came to Pioneer in the fall of 1968. The classes he taught included Typing, General Business, Social Studies, and Drivers' Education. He also served as assistant basketball coach for one year. Mr. Snider was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winamac, Lodge 630 F AM at Parker City, Scottish Rite at Indianapolis, the Yorktown Lions Club, and the Elks Lodge at Logansport. He also belonged to the National Edu- cation Association and the Indiana State Teachers Association.
