An innovation at PHS in 1969-70 was the Panther-of-the-Month award to students whom the faculty deemed worthy of recogni- tion for their qualities of cooperation or service to school, to community, or to other students. Julie Miller and Ron Powlen (at right) received awards for being the two most valuable speech members. Ron ac- cumulated the most NFL points during the year. Julie placed sixth in the state speech contest. These members (pictured below) won top honors at the Thespian Awards Banquet. Spirit Launched from Hop Pioneer’s Pep Club staged another first last fall with its first annual Tip-Off Dance. The party was held in honor of the coming basketball season. A preseason scrimmage revealed talent enough to boost anticipation to the skies. The evening was highlighted when a king and queen were an- nounced as Spirit 1970! The Tip-Off Dance lived up to its name and started the season off to an ex- citing first quarter.
