'ffl Z ' U ,ff 6 9 w ith BITTER-SWEET Editorial The gardener, who plans for a good garden, begins first in the fall, to fertilize his ground to make it ready for the planting. When the warm spring days come, and dry off the land so that plowing is possible, he turns the soil up to the sun. Finally he harrows, and rolls the land, making it a fine seed bed. After careful selection, he places the seed in the ground and anxiously awaits the cooperation of Nature in germinating his seed. Days of mingled sunshine and rain follow. The tender leaves appear through the dark surface of the soil, but witl1 these, appear noxious plants which absorb the moisture and fertility of the land. Immediately, the watchful gardener by means of cultivation clears the gar- den of these obstructions and stirs the soil to admit sunsliine and air to the ten- der roots of the plants. Nature and the farmer work together while the crop, through moisture, and sunshine, and cultivation, reaches maturity. But, when the plants reach the stage wliere cultivation is not needed, and would in fact be injurious, the weeds unhindered and unchecked, grow with rapidity until, by the time the crop is ready for harvest, there is a certain amount of undesirable growth in the field. However if the soil has been carefully prepared, the seed skillfully chosen, and nature has been kind, the yield so overwhelms the loss that the gardener feels amply repaid for his labor. So in school, the teacher like the gardener, must take the soil as it comes to him-the shallow, the stony, the fertile, and by cultivation and fertilization he must prepare these for the seed. Vigilant care being made in the selection of the seed itself, he places it in the soil and awaits the help of nature. The growth goes on but with the plants, the tiny weeds of bad habits spring up, absorbing and obstructing the growth of the life. But these, in the days of early production can be easily removed and are soon rooted out by the gardener. Nevertheless some few have escaped and, when the plants reach maturity, the weeds of habits and characteristics have grown with them. . But the gardener has not felt the garden to be a total failure despite the pres- ence of the weeds, and neither need our instructors feel discouraged if the results of their efforts are not flawless, for in life, as in gardening, all character is mar- red by some little weed that has grown with us. However, if the gardener has prepared well the seed, the soil, and Nature, or heredity, has assisted the virtues so outnumber the faults that the gardener may not feel the crops a loss and the yield well worth the labor. Let us hope that the good seeds of truth, honor, and fidelity, planted and cul- tivated by our parents and teachers, may bear such rich harvest that it may out number the noxious growth of idleness, rudeness, and inattention.
