Minds Toward Good Citizenship MRS. VIRGINIA HOWARD and MRS. MARJORIE PICKETT teach seventh and eighth grades respectively. Mrs. Howard is enthusiastic about her seventh grade students. Her husband, a graduate of PHS, is assistant director of the Lenoir County Industrial Education Center. They have two children, Becky and Steve. Mrs. Pictett has a great variety of interests out- side school, including her family, gardening, and four grand- children. She commutes daily from Magnolia. MRS. KATHERINE TYNDALL and MRS. GERALDINE SIMPSON combine knowledge and experience in teaching their third and fourth grades students. Mrs. Tyndall, a graduate of East Carolina College, looks for outstanding and inquisitive children, but she has a tender and helping hand for the slower ones. Her daughter Anne is a high school sophomore. Mrs. Simpson received her degree from Flora MacDonald College. Her husband is a local attorney and they have five chil- dren. Both teachers are active in the Methodist Church. 73

Elementary Teachers Train Fifth grade teachers are MRS. BRUCE PERKINS and MRS. MARIE HILL, both graduates of Atlantic Christian College. Mrs. Perkins enjoys her work with the school chorus which sings each year in the county music festival and her work with the music program in the Methodist Church. Her three children graduated from PHS. Mrs. Hill's husband, a PHS graduate, is mayor of our town. Away from her classroom Mrs. Hill enjoys her two boys, Tony and Jeff, the beach, and reading. MRS, KATHERINE JONES has taught sixth grade at PHS for several years. She is held in high regard by any student who was ever fortunate enough to be in her classroom. This is MR. BOBBY DAVIS' first year at Pink Hill. He is as popular Jones enjoys sewing and helping care for among his seventh grade students as among his fellow workers. He has several pet chihuahuas. Her daughter Nancy won the admiration of his Junior-Varsity basketball team through his is a teacher in Raleigh. love of basketball. Mr. Davis admires a student who is honest and who puts a maximum effort into any project he undertakes. He and his wife reside in Moss Hill with their daughter Melanie. 72

i First and second grade teachers are MRS. SCARLET HOWARD, MRS. REBECCA SMITH, and MRS, JULIA D. TURNER. This is Mrs. Howard's second year at PHS and she finds working with primary children rewarding and exciting. She has one daughter Leraine. Mrs. Smith, who exemplifies the statement that a teacher should be interested in all phases of her students, drives in daily from Beulaville with her first grade daughter Becky Ann. Mrs. Turner teaches her students to be conscientious and inquiring, and she believes that a teacher should be enthusiastic and patient. Her two children are in school. Her interests include playing bridge, sewing and working in the Presbyterian Church where she teaches a class and sings in the choir. MRS. CAROLINE BARKER attended East Carolina College. She says she likes teaching because she likes children and gets a real thrill when she sees their minds grasp new facts. She enjoys cooking and reading. Her special hobby is collecting china pitchers. She has two sons and one grandson on which she and her husband dote. 74
