Mr. Thomas Salter, freshman health and physical education instructor, ex- plains to the class the functions of the body systems. Health and Physical Educa- tion Help Us to Learn and Practice Ways to Make Our- selves Physically Fit. Health and physical education is a required freshman course but becomes an elective after the freshman year, Courses in physical education vary from basketball to weight lifting. Eunice Taylor and Carol Greer meet the challenge in a game of doubles in ping-pong. Group participation is always a favorite with freshmen. Here a group of girls swing on a rope. This type of exercise develops practically every muscle in the body.

Sewing is one of the main skills grasped by the sophomore girls in home economics, Katherine Taylor and other girls are sewing skirts and weskits. Mrs. Nancy Jones instructs her class con- cerning the proper procedures to be followed in laying a pattern and then cutting. Dianne Taylor works diligently in her homemaking class to complete her sewing project. 23

Students who enroll in Drivers’ Education learn through the two-fold method of the textbook and then through the actual experience of driving. Mr. Robert K. Hunter gives instructions to Ann Tyndall as she begins her first day under the wheel. Special Interest Courses Offer Variety Driver Education, a favorite with most students, is areward- ing subject to master. The joyof the sixteen year old, knowing that he is ready for his driver's license and that he will be known as a safe driver, is a joy that is probably unequaled at any age. Library work offers one the opportunity to become ‘acquainted with every student in the school, Band opens a wide field. One can progress from the local band to the county band which is composed of the best musicians in Lenoir County. Library Science students take a vote on what type book to purchase for the library with money earned from a bake sale. Mr. James A. Piver, band instructor, is new to us this year. Here he is shown giving instructions to Wayne Pike, Anthony Quinn, and Daniel Whitson. 25
