The growth of an individual is a threefold process. lt encompasses mental maturity, spiritual enlightenment, and physical progress. At Pingry, all three of these phases have been properly empha- sized so as to mold well-rounded and open-minded individuals. Academically Pmgrys curriculum and fine faculty are responsible for the mental growth of the students Through a diversified and highly individual type of tram mg the boys at Pmgry are famnliarlzed with the sublect matter and are encouraged to draw their own con clusions The mind at Pmgry while guided along fixed principles is given unusual freedom of thought and expression so as to encourage its growth and acqusltlon of knowledge Spiritual growth is not neglected at Pmgry either Morning chapel services usually led by upperclassmen provide insights into various religious Ideas and serve to set the mood for the days work Religion ethics and philosophy are Included in the English courses to further acquaint the students with the spiritual side of life Finally the growth of the body a never ending pro cess is also given direct attention Daily athletic periods and an unusual variety of sports from squads teaching fundamentals to experienced varsity teams are the back bone of Pmgrys athletic program Boys are encouraged to actively participate In a sport thus completing the three phases of their growth Therefore Pmgry does not turn out one sided mdu viduals Interested in only one aspect of life but men having a liberal view who are more prepared to take their places in the larger community of the world L . . , . , I ' . Mr E Laurence Springer remains today as youthful and modern in his ideas as he was when he first came to Pingry in 1936 With Mr Springer at the helm Pingry has risen from a small preparatory school with limited facilities to a new well equipped, and na tionally recognized school whose graduates can be found un many of America s top colleges Our Headmaster however is more than lust a figurehead or a fund raiser Rather he is a warm and personable individual who takes a great personal interest in the boys. Although his is a very busy day Mr. Springer is always willing to take a few minutes to speak with a boy or master should a problem arise. This constant effort on behalf of our Head- master has won unending admiration for him among all members of the Pingry family. As with everything at Pingry, Mr. Springer is con- stantly improving, not only himself but his school as well. Evidence of this is the honorary degree of Doc- tor of Letters awarded him by Princeton University and the construction of a new science wing for the school. Certainly Mr. Springer symbolizes Pingry and the growth of its students. He has been our guiding light throughout our careers at Pingry. Greeting Mrs. Wasasier were Rob Gibby, who was born with a silver Mexican speed-wrench in his hand, Carl Haines, who shovels it fastest by virtue of vocation, Terry Montgomery, the man who never returned, and Skip, the elephant, Reitman. As we moved to the second grade, these stalwarts were met by Pete, print that in your rag, Johannsen and Jim Whitlock, who was accepted at Princeton after the first mark- ing period. Joining us as we moved upstairs to the third grade was Dave, the Aug, Berenson. Jay Ken- nedy, the heart-throb of Vail-Deane, and Dave Speno, who just sold Mr. Hahn to the New York Football Giants for an undisclosed amount, en- tered in the fourth grade. As kings of the Lower School in Mrs. Vars' fifth grade, we were ioined by John Rush, who lately has been trying to teach chemistry to a shark, and Scott, Scrooge, Trull. As these eleven nervous boys made their way to the Middle School, then known as Varsville, their number was doubled by the addition of the students from the outlying districts of Sum- mit, Short Hills, Secaucus, and Moscow. Entering in the Sixth Grade were: Jim Egan, who iust plain knows it all, Frank Franklin, who iust plain nose it all, Dave Hixson, the Earl of Bernards- ville, Rusty Hyde, the only boy in the class to have a charge account at the Livingston Drive-ln, Frank Kaphan, who owns a boat, or is it two boats, or three ? ? ? , Paul Knoke, the Class of '60's own major domo, John Manley, who owes the town of Ocean Grove one fire hydrant, Jim Marx, who is running for president in 1964, Ridge Prevost, the fastest thing on two wheels, and Jay Wortley, who knows where the yellow went. In the First Form the ranks were again swelled by: Larry Clayton, Pingry's representative to the Plainfield Country Club, Rett Foster, whose mother runs a boarding house for the Unholy Five, John Green, more commonly known as the Spider, followed closely by Tom Johnson, Ernie May, a do-it-yourself organist, Steve Meyer, who HISTORY uses the snow at Stowe, but not to ski, Ross Miesem, who drives on two wheels to save wear and tear on his tires, Ted Moo-o-ok, Jeff Ruddy, the harried harrier, Ivy Art Scutro, Bill Wer- theimer, who plays football, Dave Wheaton, who dates girls with boys names, Pete Wiley, who has a floor plan for a nunnery, and Bart If the boys at Flinn's could only see me now! Wood. Reigning as lords of the Middle School, they were ioined by Wes Ackley, who drives his car with a blue key, John Hood, of athletic fame, and Smokey Stover, the first serious student to enter since the first grade. With the move to the Upper School, the number was increased with the arrival of Brad Beldon, Nantucket Hotel Wrecker, Jim Hey, Hey Kraiu- ski Boskey, Paul Boyer, whose claim to fame is having dated Dhuanne Schmitz in the third grade, Pete Coughlan, who has more middle names than you can shake a shilaley at, Howard Benedict Arnold Danzig, Bill Chief Divot- Digger Ellis, Henry English, Pingry's answer to Gene Krupa, Ed Griepenkerl and Joe Helyar, our one-two punch, Jay Keep up the Reputa- tion! Hughes, Bill Krueger, neatest boy in the class, Bill Low, who pedals his Volkswagon to school every day, Dave MacNeil, the progres- sive Princetonian, Jim Petrie, who gets a kick out of driving, Barry Ruth, the Eagle Scout who won't say what he's scouting, Rick Schumann, Pingry's answer to Phil Hill, John Sloboda, our human test tube, Sabin Snow, an expert at marbles, Don Up with the Little People! West, and Pete Wood, Mad's Michaelangelo. In the Fourth Form we were ioined by Alan Brewster, author of that current best-seller, The Joys of Owning a Corvette and Not Driving It, Bob Chittenden, our delegate to the Third Reich, Tom Carlos Montoya Colchie, John Tom Collins, Bob Fitzgibbons, who knows a cool short cut through a rock garden, and Mike Wyman, our human exclamation point. We went into the Fifth Form ready for anything, which is precisely what we got in the persons of Jim Campbell, Pingry's answer to the Marlboro Man, and Bar- ry Cyrano Wagar. Centennial Class ular studies, two advanced placement programs were offered, while single semester courses of Public Speak- ing and Driver Education were attended by a large maiority. Extra-curricular interests of the class were diversified. Pingry's two publications, the Record and the Blue Book, were assisted by numerous Juniors, as were the Glee Club, the Band and the Pingry Players. The language, discussion and debating, Science, and chess clubs like- wise were supported by many Fifth Formers. The success of previous class social altairs was renewed this year at events planned and put on by the Juniors themselves. Also well attended by the Juniors were the dances staged by the Dance Committee, which received aid from the Fifth Form ranks. Already qualities are evident in the class of '61 that will prove this, the Centennial Class, worthy of its dis- tinguished role as the one hundreth senior class. 65 An ace and three jacks. para! r il and 1 Ghrislxey, Meyer J., Bowe, Schorr. Many members of the class participated on junior varsity teams and several were on the varsity. Other members of the class were active in the intramural athletic program. Various members ot the class participated in such activities as the Record, Glee Club, Blue Book, Dramatic Club, Blue Key, and language clubs. A significant con- tribution was made by the Fourth Form in these activities and in many others. Throughout the year, class advisors met with the boys to discuss their activities and achievements and to guide them on their plans for college. This year, Mr. David B. Koth, Mr. Edmund A. LeFevre, Mr. Franklin A. Dorman, Mr. C. Brett Boocock, and Mr. Richard C. Weiler were the Fourth Form Advisors. The Class of 1962 is sure to maintain its high scho- lastic standards and continue to excel in citizenship and sportsmanship throughout their remaining years at Pingry. E.P.C. FIFTH ROW: Pitt, Freshmen today, Seniors tomorrow In the extra-curricular phase of school lite, the Third Formers entered a wide variety of activities with an enthusiasm that will undoubtedly assure good leadership in the future for both the club activities and the athletic teams. The Blue Book, the Record, the Glee Club, the science service, and discussion clubs all had Third Form members as did the Junior Dramatics Club, whose presentation was solely a Third and Fourth Form undertaking. Likewise in athletics, the Third Form's own teams entered into spirited competition with their various opponents. ln addi- tion to playing third team sports, a number of boys participated on Junior Varsity teams while the whole class contributed to the spirit exhibited at the year's Varsity contests. With such a successful year behind them, next year's Fourth Form is undoubtedly assured of a future in the Upper School that will mark the Class of '63 as out- standing. Squatters' rights? The clear, sharp tones produced by this group adds greatly to the Christmas atmosphere in the singing of Yule- tide hymns. The second organization is known as the disc group. It is their job to tape the Glee Club performing during concerts for the purpose of putting out a long-playing record at the end of the school year. The members are to see that the Honor Code is upheld in all phases of school life, however, their main obiective is not to reprimand violations of the code, but to help violators see their mistakes and change their attitude. Besides dealing with violations of the Honor System, the Council also undertakes proiects throughout the year beneficial to the school. lt conducts the annual charity drive, operates the vending machines, sponsors spectator buses to away football games, and discusses many other important school matters.
