Good English promotes growth in ability to think, speak, and write clearly and correctly in order to express the desired idea. The English teachers of Pincvillc High School excel in their ability to teach these qualities to the students while making their classes interesting and often exciting and humorous. Algebra II brings students further, into the realm of the properties of imaginary numbers. Geometry, the study of two-dimensional figures, gives the fundamentals of planes and angles. Advanced Math brings all the math skills together, wherein the student studies algebra, trigonometry, and fundamental calculus. 17 Qocia! One finds as each day passes, that it becomes more important to know what is happening in the world today, how it is influenced by past events, and how it will affect the future. Civics gives the student an inside lΒ«x k at how the government operates and its effect on society. World history tells the story of manβs beginning and his development physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is an elective, but those preparing for college are urged to take this course. American History gives the student an appreciation of this countryβs heritage. As a requirement for graduation, it includes a comprehensive study of communism in which students can compare present day societies. Mr Benjamen points out one of his students' many errors. U. Boys participate in basketball, football, baseball, and track with respect to the particular season. Girlsβ activities include bounceball, softball, volleyball, golf, table tennis, basketball, badminton, and tumbling. A health course is required one six-weeks period during the year. Science β The Frontier of Tomorrow PINEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL offers several exploratory science courses which include Chemistry, Chcrn Study, Biology. General Science, and Physics. Students taking these courses acquire a better and fuller insight into the hows and whysβ of our earth's making. General Science, made available for freshmen, teaches the basic fundamentals of science and prepares the student for the broader subjects such as biology and physics. Biology deals with animal and plant life, whereas physics consists of a combination of math and chemistry. Having been introduced two years ago, Chem Study is one of the newest courses offered at Pineville High. The more advanced student is advised to take Chem Study rather than Chemistry because more difficult experiments are performed as a result of special textbooks. Chemistry, on the other hand, involves more classwork and less lab work. Mrs. Wilkerson finds a studentβs question amusing. Assistant Football Coach Bramlctt sorts the old jerseys. Being experienced or unexperienced in the music field, the student can find a place in the schoolβs vocal department. Intermediate chorus is taught to introduce all phases of music theory. The advanced group, Rcbelaires, performs for various activities. Art classes are available to those students wishing to express their imagination in different ways. AS WELL INDICATED by William Tuma and John Clarius. the Rebs have just recovered a Lcesvillc fumble. CATS BEFORE THE start of the 1970 football season, many people thought that Pineville would better its 1969 record of 4-5-1. As the Rebs would have eight returning starters and a lot more experience, these thoughts seem justified. The inconsistency in keeping their scoring drive alive was one of the main reasons the Rebels fell to the 1970 worksheet of 4-6. But this record does not tell the whole story of the 1970 season for the hard fighting Rebs. The first game of the season saw a new rivalry develop as Pineville clashed with the Alexandria Senior High Trojans. Even though the score was in favor of ASH. Pineville won by-forfeit as the Trojans had an ineligible player on the field. As a result of the re-classification of teams, the new schedule called for nine district ballgames. Also the Rebs jumped from 3-AA to 3-AAA. The first home game was against Oakdale. The eventual district champs proved to Ik- too strong for the Rebs and won 31-0. EXHIBITING GOOD lateral movement, linebacker Daniel Funderburk prepares to make the tackle. 99 THE TEAM showed true Reb spirit and bounced back to win the next three games. First, came the Peabody contest, another new opponent on the schedule, in which the Pineville gridders won 20-0 on a mud-soaked field. The trip to Jena proved to be worthwhile as the Rebs looked impressive in their 41-19 rout over the Giants. Next came an important district battle with Lccsville, which had just beaten Oakdale. The players were in high spirits, and their efforts were not wasted. Pineville walked away with a 14-6 triumph. The second half of the season proved to lx- a different situation. Against more powerful teams the underdog Rebs fought valiantly but could not total enough points to win any of the remaining five games. Althouth not a winning season, the tired and injury plagued Rebs had given a gocxl account of themselves. Bill May drives for a lay up. 107 Lack of Leadership Hinders Rebs AFTER RECEIVING a pass, Bobby Tullos prepares to make a move on his defender. AS A Lccsville player grabs a rebound, he is confronted by the reaching arms of Dave Hathorn and Bonny Marzctt. TEAM DEFENSE is demonstrated as Duke A good slides down to help Gordon Daniel w ith a Natchitoches player. ALL ALONE, Duke Allgood watches as a Natchitoches player goes up for a shot. FOUR TO ONE are unfair odds, but Bill May does not notice as he shoots a driving lay-up. WHAT WOULD the 1970-71 season be like? What problems would the new district create? These were just two of the many questions on the minds of Coaches Rucker and Kaiser as the Rebels prepared to embark on the 1970-71 campaign. The pressure from being the 1970 AA State Runner-up may have been responsible for the loss of the first three ball games. However, these early losses did not worry the coaches or the team to a great extent, as they felt that the little problems of the first few games could easily lx- ironed out as the season progressed. But to the dismay of everyone, these little problems that continued to crop up were not resolved, causing the Rcbs to play one of the most disappointing seasons in the school's history. What were the reasons for this ruin of a team that had four of its first six back from last season? A person could name-many reasons for this, but basically there are three: the inability to forget their hang-ups,β injuries, and the inability to think and act as a team on the floor. Even though the Rcbs did not play to their potential this year, they never gave up, even when they were eliminated from district contention. STRAINING very hard. Bonny Marzett struggles for a rebound. HAVING ONLY three returning Icttcrmen from the previous season, the coaches had some doubt as to the success of the 1970 track season. Also there was a lack of depth in all events. However, their fears were soon allayed as they saw the hard work that each member of the squad was doing. With the running of each meet came better results, for each Rebel thindad was striving to improve himself in readiness for the district meet. The high point of the season came when the Rebel mile-relay team broke a two year old record in a time of 3:27.1. This same relay also went on to qualify for the regional and state meets, both of which were held at PUS. The thinclads from Pineville continued their industrious work and managed second place in district, capturing four firsts, five seconds, including a second in each relay, and a couple of thirds. They also qualified for eight events in the regional meet. The competition was a lot stiffer at the Regional Meet, but the Confederates still managed to qualify- in three-events of the state meet: William Cavanaugh in the 440 yard dash, I-eonard Sanderson in the 180 yard low hurdles, and the mile relay team. All in all, it was another fine year for the Rebel cindermen. WITH A heave. Mike Gaspard puts the shot. 69-β70 I RA(,K n-.AM: FIRS'I ROW: Morris Wilmcr, Oscar Harrell.
