This is an age of action and we do not wish to be left behind. Therefore, it is to the schools that the South looks for trained young men and women to man the wheels of the industries that are fast filling up the southern scene. To have trained workers, one must have well-qualified teachers. We are proud of our teachers and students who are striving to build a greater Dixieland, U.S. A. In keeping with this trend, each year our Science Department sponsors a Science Fair. Every student who takes science prepares an exhibit. Professors from nearby colleges are invited to be the judges, and they award the ribbons. Winning exhibits are then entered in the District Fair and the State Science Fair. Our students have prepared some outstanding projects which are pictured on the following page. MR. CLAYTON BULLARD B. S., La. Forming an organized squad for all football games, selling season football and basketball tickets, attending basketball games, sponsor ing Homecoming and helping in community projects are only a few of the activities of these staunch supporters of Pineville High School. Miss Stafford, the sponsor, devotes many hours to these girls as she trains them for half time shows, chaperons them to each out-of-town game, takes them on one special trip for pleasure and sees that each girl learns not only how to cooperate, but also how to have fun. Rivet, consists of the Dixie Kats, the Football Band, the Concert Band, the Majorettes, and the Chorus. The Dixie Kats are a newly organized group of musicians who are learning popular, Dixie-land, and dance music. Attractive uniforms of the Football and Concert Bands depict Confederate Officers of the past years in Dixie. At Football games, festivals, concerts, and other numerous community activities-the Rebel Band is always there to do its share. A Football Band would not be complete without Majorettes to lead it. The Majorettes perform with the band at most occasions. The unique drills, carried out by these girls, add much to any performance. The Chorus is the vocal division of the Music Department. Songs of all types are learned and prepared throughout the year, to present at the Spring Concert. A Year in Dixie wouldnot be complete without Music. Speech Department The Name -Speech Department is magic to many ears, for this part of our school works magic in helping to transform shy, awkward boys and girls into poised, self-assured young men and ladies. For Speech includes not only dramatics but other phases of public speaking as well. There are three groups who take part in speech activities. The two speech classes, which have organized into clubs known as Les Parleurs and The Future Speakers, are the training groups. Those who take part in enough activities and who win enough points are then invited to become members of the Thespians, which is a national honorary organization for budding dramatic stars. One major production a year is given and through this medium all those pupils who are involved learn the intricacies of the stage from props to production. The production this year was Our Miss Brooks. Mrs. Miller sponsors all speech work. Summary of the Season The Pineville Rebels coached by Jimmy Keeth, Clayton Bullard, and Vernon Beall hit pay din in '56. The Rebs finished the season with a record of seven wins, three losses, and one tie. Primarily the Rebels were a running team, taking to the air when necessary for additional yardage. They showed a well-balanced offensive attack and a coordinated team defense. Highlights of the season include a defeat of Triple AAA Ouachita and a shut-out win over the Class A state finalist, Oakdale. A victory over Winnfield for the Homecoming game also provided excitement for the team and student body. In fact, from the opening game with Marksville the promise of a bright season to come became evident. Corky Yates, a senior, led the local teams in yards gained passing, and Billy Funderburk, the Work horse of the backfield led the squad in scoring with a total of 55 points. football CORKY YATES Back BOB CORLEY Back FRANK SANDERS Back REBELS TIE COSMO GAME WITH OAKDALE The Pineville Rebels tied the Oakdale Warriors 7-7 at the annual Cosmopolitan Jamboree in Alexandria In the first action on the gridiron of the year. Yates completed 8 of 11 for the night, while King ran and caught passes beautifully. From the first time they got their hands on the ball to the game's end, it was just too much Rebel power. Corky Yates ran, passed, and directed the fine Rebel units as they really rolled up a wide margin score. Robert Corley chipped in as usual with his allround play. Yates completed 6 of 13 passes during the night, most of them to Farrar. Harris scored the winning touchdown by racing 31 yards for the final score of the game with the Rebels trailing 14-13 at the time. Eddie Guillotte scored on a pass from Yates, and Billy Funderburk scored on a four yard churn up the middle. The Rebs completely dominated the Warriors in every department in the game. Making only 93 yards rushing and 19 passing, the Warriors never got a chance to score. The Rebels marched up and down the field almost at will, capitalizing on all breaks. Three of the touchdowns were made on long runs by Jon Harris, Buddy King, and Billy Funderburk. The fourth score was added when J. W. Ferrier received a pass from Corky Yates. Menard scored first on a 55 yard pass play from Buddy Cosen-za to Bootsy Watson after only three plays from scrimmage. The Rebels came back with a score only 1:30 left in the first half as Billy Funderburk crashed over from the two yard line. The Rebels took the second half kick-off and came back strong. Corky Yates capped the drive by throwing a 21 yard scoring pass to Jon Harris. Butch Willis led the Eagles' drive as they rallied right back to tie the score.
