Board of Education Our Board of Education members, equipped with broadmindedness, a sense of responsibility, and a sincere desire to help young people, have enacted the role of Path- finders as they blazed new paths for us students. We are the only students in Chautauqua County benefiting from a natatorium. This year a special class was added to the junior high curriculum. More teachers have been added to meet the instruction needs of an increased number of students. New buses have been purchased to keep transportation problems to a minimum. Also, a new station wagon was added which is used for driver education. Principals To the Class of 1960 Congratulations and best wishes to you as you write the final pages of this early chapter of your life. Graduation means not an end to high school but the beginning of bigger and better things. In this day of expanding population, the oppor- tunities for you are almost limitless. For sure, living and earning a living is increasing the need for thorough education and specialized training. But with that training, your chances for a life of satisfaction are better. May you continue to learn through study and work ex- perience, so that you can be a part of and take the necessary leadership in public affairs that will make this country a better place in which to live. Come back and visit often. You have been a fine class and we are proud of you. Again, congratulations! Sincerely, r C LIFLSA LU - afvvvYQ Carl W. Stamp CARL W. STAMP Supervising Principal RICHARD I.. Do you need to find the population of Leon? Whenever anyone needs help, he usually goes to the office. There the answer is found to many ques- tions for many individuals. Perhaps some of these problems are a bit out of the secretarial line, and although the secretaries seem glad to help, it would not be at all strange if occasionally they wish they could do just what would be considered Strictly for Secretaries . Anyway, our thanks to you, members of the clerical staff. MRS. BUTCHER South Dayton Secretary MISS ELLIOTT Cherry Creek Secretary ., i.1 Row One: D. Weaver, D. Kyser, L. Hadley. Row Two: Q. This year ou.r Student Council joined the State Student Council Association. This provides a means of communicating with other councils throughout the state and for exchanging ideas for projects. It pro- vides greater experience which helps as 'Young Teens Talk It Over. The officers, Richard Sandy, Richard Brown, Sharon Mead, and Sandra Pattyson lead the group in its activities and discussions. They are constantly searching for new ways to help our student council, and through that, to be of benefit to the entire school. The Student Council is to be commended for providing a more democratic way of government at Pine Valley and for truly being an organization where Young Teens Talk It over. Honor Society For the first time since its organization, the Honor Society was composed only of members chosen during the spring of '59. We ate proud to announce that our major project was the establishment of an honor study hall. We attended a meeting with other regional honor societies where we learned of ways to better our organizational activities. This long-to-be remembered year was climaxed by the annual field trip. Certainly all of the members of the Honor Society have agreed that where they were inducted into this organization, it was Their Finest Hour. Row One: J. Merrill, L. Emley, G. Scott, J. Our scrapbook for this year shows that we've had a full year of activities. On November 13, we held a dance which was planned and carried our on a superstitious theme. Next, we began selling cards! Our total-sales hit an all time high, and the profit we made certainly helped our bankbook. Among other activities, the junior Class sold candy and ice cream,as well as basketball booster shields during january and February. In April, we were very busy with a dance and our play. All in all, our year has been a great success and has certainly helped to prepare us for A Year from Now to which we look forward with much enthusiasm. Row One P. Weaver, C. Estus, S. Clark, S. Sophomores . We Sophomores started off the year by raising money by selling pens. Any person passing through the hall would invariably be hailed by some sophomore querying, Do ya' wanta' buy a pen? Many people did buy which greatly boosted our treasury. Our dance, The Sweetheart Swing, held on February 19, was well attended by many gay and happy dancers. Now we are looking with great anticipation toward our Junior year, especially to the time when we will receive our Senior rings. I And so we sound the clarion call, Come on Sophomores, and 'Lets Look Ahead' to improved scholarship, and greater participation in all class activities. Freshmen Alrhough we had n little rmuble nr lirsr lnming the ways of the high school students, it didn't mlre us lnng ro catch nn. With Grear Expccmrinns we embarked on our high school career. For the firsr rime we planned a real dance as a source nf revenue for our treasury. We slsu sold ice cream in the cafeteria ru help provide class funds. There are so many acriviries rhar at lirsr we had a hanl time choosing in which ones we wished to parricipare. Some nf our members dirl well in rheir chnices. Russell Morey ran 50 yards to make a touchdown for the j.V. game against Randolph. Jun Young has done well on the Varsity basketball team. Fred Gould played drums in rhe band, and also in rhe dance band. Sn you can see dia: veisariliry is a strong pain: among us In-shmen. We have had charge of the school store which has been our one fund- raising activity. Since we believe in putting first things first we have thus far kept our social activities to a minimum. However, this last half of the year held many things in store for us. We had a class party and a skating party. The special highlight of the year was the class trip to Gettysburg. The 59-60 season ushered Pine Valley into the newly formed Chautauqua County B league. This league proved to be one of the best in the area. The Panthers got off to a dismal start by losing five games in a row. However, around mid-season, we got under power and were a match for most of the reams in our league. We finished fifth place in a seven team league. This record isn't too bad con- sidering the high calibre of the teams we opposed. Gene Cullen was our high point man with' 148 points, 108 of them earned in league competition. Gene was followed in point production by a trio of underclassmen, namely Rich Sandy, Don Volk, and jon Young which promises well for next year. Don Volk also won the foul shot trophy with a very good percentage of 75. Next year we will miss Gene Cullen, our center, who was at times the best pivot man in the league. We also regret losing Dick Killock, whose value could never be measured in points, for he was a great rebounder and defensive man, and, at important times, a good scorer. LeRoy Emley and Herb Johnson will also be gone next year. These two backcourt hustlers provided a lot of snap to the line-up and will be sadly missed. After the last game, the coaches treated the -two P.V. teams to a wonderful party which everyone en- joyed. We swam and ate to our hearts' content. Next year the team has high hopes of improvin our 7 wins and 11 losses record, as our Captair Courageous will take off for a new season. Forestville 40 P. V. 3 'Mayville 52 P. V. 4 'Brocton 42 P. Next year's Varsity cheerleaders can be planning on wearing new uniforms. The junior Varsity girls were fortunate to have pretty new uniforms this year which they made for themselves. All the cheerleaders, as well as the student body, have contributed to good sportsmanship and more school spirit this year. Let's all keep up the good work in the future. Inexperience was our greatest disadvantage in our 1959 baseball season. The end of the season saw Gary Ingersoll as top batter with an average of 250. The 1960 season ahead, looks promising, since all our players will return with the exception of Chuck Fancher and Jerry Ellis who will be missed by all. With many seasoned veterans our future looks brighter to us. Brocton 8 P. V. 2 Mayville 10 P. V. 2 Bemus Point 13 P. V. 0 Cassadaga Valley 3 P. V. 1 Silver Creek 10 P. V. 5 Westfield 4 P. Eleven-man football was played by the Junior Varsity although the Varsity continued with six-man. Our first eleven-man team was made up of a nucleus of sophomores who did very well in their efforts to Hold That Line. Although our record of 1 victory, 5 defeats, and 1 tie may not seem impres- sive, it should be remembered that the rest of the lea- gue, with the exception of Panama, had the advant- age of one year's experience over us in playing eleven-rnan. We won our first game against Panama on a dramatic last second field goal by our A F S student, Torn Naehrig, who had no previous experience in Panama 7 P.V. 10 Westfield 28 P.V. 0 Bemus Point 32 P.V. 0 Falconer Sophs 6 Football football. Two close games with Randolph and Forest- ville followed with our opponents winning. West- field, Cassadaga, and Bemus Point all surpassed us in both size and experience, with resulting victories for them. Our last game was played under the lights at Falconer, and was battled to a tie. Next year we will be losing four important players: Leroy Emley, our fine quarterbackg Sid Pat- tyson, our hard running fullback, Neil Cullen, who played a vital role in our defense as a linebacker, and Tom Naehrig, who was one of the best kickers in our league. I In spite of this, we will have many experienced ballplayers. We expect Pine Valley not only to Hold That Line but to become a power in our league. Cassadaga Valley 34 P.V. The team placed 2nd in the match with Silver Creek. Against Little Valley and Forestville the Pine Valley team placed first, and first against Brocton, Sherman, and Mayville. In the county B and C class they placed second, and sixth in the sectionals. Unfortunately, in 1960 we won't have .many of the boys who have been Around the World in 80 Days with their various stunts. Jerry Ellis, the top scoring individual for Pine Valley, and who broke the pole-vault record has graduated. Also we lost Ken Oakes, Dean Linsler, James Everetts, Don Rexford, Dean Morey, and Charles Fancher. Still we have great prospects for setting future records for going Around the World in 80 Days with fellows such as Jeff Merrill and Mickey Barry, along with other returning lettermen. Volleyball Since we are so late in organizing our starting team in volley ball this year, it is most fortunate for us that We Have Tomorrow. The starting team, consisting of six players with three extras, will be selected from last year's players, CEugene Cullen, Neil Cullen, Rich Sandy, Don Volk, Tim Stiles, Gary Ingersoll, Bill Stamp, Larry Brumaginj and from the new players, C Dick Killock, LeRoy Emley, Jim Lo- Monto, Jon Young, Francis Heath, Fred Dye and Tim Pickupb. This selected starting team will play one scrirn- mage with Brocton and two with Little Valley. The one day of final playoff will be held at Brocton, We hope this year's team will be as successful as was last year's which had a record of five victories and one defeat. It played Cassadaga for the champion- ship, resulting in Cassadaga's success. Wrestling The 1959-1960 wrestling squad of Pine Valley comprised a record of 2 victories, 1 tie, and 9 losses. It must be noted however, that forfeited matches were the cause of 5 of the meet losses. Defend Yourself is an axiom that was truly exemplified by such stars as Doug Fancher, Ralph Nash and Ted Houben. Through the year these boys had the best won and lost record. Doug won 12. and lost only 2 and received newspaper recognition. Ralph Nash had a 11-5 record. Both boys were second in the sectionals. The future wrestling picture is bright. We lose only two boys by graduation and with a fine potential among the underclassmen. Pine Valley says Watch Out. l l 1 Row One: R. Chase, R. Morey, E. Mierzwa, D. Kapple, T. Dye, L. Harkness, J. We feel that we had a fairly good season this year despite the bad weather during one of our games. We played four games of which we won two and lost two. We beat Randolph by a score of 13-7, and they defeated us ppc? 13-12. We won against Sherman with a score of Coach Brown reported that it was a near hurricane during the Silver Creek-Pine Valley game. Nevertheless, we played with the Spirit of the Eagle which is an out- V. Football standing characteristic of true sportsmen. During the season, some of the fellows even played on the Varsity team. Coach expects the following to be real assets on the Varsity team next year: Russell Morey, Ed Bentley, Larry Snyder, Ed Mierzwa, Tim Dye, jack Weaver, Frank Barth and Larry DiAntonio. We look forward, with great anticipation to playing more football under Coach Brown. . V. Basketball The j.V. basketball team had a very successful year with 12 wins and 6 losses. Our team outscored the opponents 660 to 599. Tim Stiles finished on top, both in score ing and foul shooting. He made not only 132 points but also SOWJ of the foul shots. V 7TH AND 8TH BASKETBALL We had a very successful year under Coach Tomasulo. As we go to press, we still have one game to play. The seventh and eighth grades each played four games, and in two other games they combined as a junior high team. The eighth grade team has won all but one of its games, and the seventh grade has lost only two games. Larry Waite, Dennis Brown, Tom Frary, and Douglas Weaver all took advantage of A Chance for Glory which was well demonstrated by their successful playing. It has been great fun playing basketball this year and we are looking forward to next year when again A Chance for Glory will loom ahead of us. wald, D. Weaver, D. Ranke, R. Marquart, G Ingersoll. During the meetings, one day a week after school, the students in this group have started many projects. Each student has been trying to choose for him- self an individual program to pursue for this year. The group has attended science workshops at both Buffalo and Silver Creek which have added to their scientific information. Library Club Our club has about thirty active members. We assist the librarian by helping to process new books. Also, we work behind the desk checking books in and out. The money collected from fines on overdue books goes into a fund to purchase worthwhile gifts for the school. For instance we bought a copy of Syrian Yankee and presented it to the library. We feel that this book, among many, many others is good Book Bait and we hope many students will do more than nibble at it. ' Seated: F. Howard, B. Barth, L. Hadley. Standing: N. Mathewson, D. Among them are how to cook and how to serve attractive meals as well as how to guide The Thread That Runs So True . One of the outstanding aims of our club is for developing better citizenship in the home and community. We know that we will be the builders of the homes for America's future. We are striving to learn how to develop homes in the future where living will be the expression of everything. We had Cup Cake Day and sold many cup cakes. At Christmas time we rnade corsages. The proceeds from both of these ventures went to swell our treasury. Along the line of sewing, we made new curtains and also we made aprons which we wore while waiting on table at the dinner for the Boards of Education of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties which was held in our school. Each ear our F.H.A. seems to et bigger and better in every way. Y 8 Photography Club The Photography Club, under the direction of Mr. Tomasulo, consists of fifteen members. The first part of the year was spent in trying to learn as much as possible about developing and printing procedures. At times, the Photography Club receives films from the Kodak Company. It is possible to have films developed by the Photography Club at cost. Our Photography Club does much good work around our school, and the evidence that Art Has Many Faces is found in various departments in which we have worked. Some of the yearbook pic- tures were printed by the Photography Club. The work of this club also furnishes a good background for those who may want to pursue photography at some future date. .- Sented: S. Saye, E. Jones, T. Naehrig, Mr. Tomasulo, J Rundell, D. The primary pur- poses of the organization are to develop agricultural leadership, improve cooperation, and advance citizenship. As each member considers Perhaps I'll be a Farmer, he is encouraged to develop an individual farming program and to improve his home sur- roundings. In the past year, F.F.A. sent a representative to the G.L.F. annual meeting in Syracuse. During the 1959 summer, the members attended many judging tours through- out the state. A few members were honored ro go to the mid-winter fair in Toronto, Canada. All our many experiences will help us to make the idea, that, Perhaps I'll be a Farmer, become a certainty at some future date. Service Club The Service Club has been organized to aid the various classes through the many services which the members perform. They are Always Ready to operate the movie projector, the opaque projector, and the tape recorder as well as to set up the scenery for the class plays that are presented yearly. High School Yorkers This is the fourth year that our High School Yorker Club has been in existence. Each year our membership has increased until now we number almost sixty members. In the fall, we served a spaghetti dinner and from the proceeds gave fifty dollars to the A.F.S. Also, we headed the calendar sales in which the combined clubs co- operated with the Lions' Club to raise further funds for A.F.S. In observance of Education Week, we presented an assembly program. A panel, composed of several Yorkers, discussed with Tom Naehrig, our exchange student, the Art Club I Our Art Club, with its member- ship of thirty-five, has been very active this year. Our club is, pri- marily, a service organization. Any- one want a sign painted? We have painted many this year. Perhaps we used nearly H900 Buckets of Paint to announce athletic events, alone. In addition to sign painting, we engaged in two craft projects. With the use of ice cream sucker sticks, we made eight-sided baskets which could be very useful decorations. Also, we fashioned French poodles using a pipe cleaner foundation. They were both realistic and attrac- tive. We sold some and added the profits to our club treasury to pur- chase more craft materials. In general, we feel that we have had a very successful year. How- ever, we hope next year to increase our finances so that we may be able to do many more projects. educational system of Germany. In March, we presented our one act play along with the seventh and eighth grade groups at the annual Yorker Play Night. We feel as if we truly are Magnificent Yankees especially since Carol Estus is the zone president. This is the first year a Pine Valley Yorker has won that office. We are looking forward to the jamboree at Orchard Park in April and the convention at Buffalo in May where we will exchange ideas with other Yorkers from all over the state. Row One: R. Zynda, P.
