They lived with each other in peace, prosperity, and harmony. Strife with Mexico followed and Texas won its independence. The Lone Star was replaced by the Stars and Stripes when Texas was admitted into the Union in 1846. The hardy pioneers continued to exist on a frontier standard. They realized that education was necessary in order to Progress, and from this realization Pine Tree School, the first permanent school in Gregg County, was es- tablished. Prior to the Civil War and as late as 1870, Pine Tree was the leading school for the Gregg Coun- ty area. Many boarding students from the adjoining communities, and even from other counties. came to Pine Tree to finish. From the time of its origin to this, Pine Tree has pioneered public education in Gregg County, and has rendered outstanding ser- vice to the community in which it is located. Black Gold was discovered in 1931 within the confines of the school district and gave impetus to an unprecedented increase in population, which the small three teacher school could not adequate- ly absorb. A huge program of expansion was necessary to meet the rapid- ly growing needs of this greatly increased population. The crisis was promptly met by the wisdom and foresight of the school author- ities and the public-spirited cit- izens, when the drastic demands were adequately answered by the spacious and well-equipped build- ing pictured here. r, f- T 1 , 1' , win QQ . 9--' as H ' f -1-.-1. - 3. ,f - , Q' -E pl. -sQS?'r..A 11,5 ,f -2-,Q . , , 1- 1 ' -' Yr 1 w-.- '5?fr93T.'7-f--fxli' ffl 'K ,., 'T' Q -i ff Q3 1 I-'Q ,LQ at U 5.35, A-.,. , :'Qt.Q7z.. Paul Bunt. Sponsor: Mr. jack L.. Ballard QNot shownj. Bobby joe Cupit, Captain and Ace of the Pine Tree Golf Team, has been playing golf since he was ten years ofage. He is one of the most outstanding junior linksmen in the State, and has certainly put Pine Tree on the map. It is only fitting, that, on the 100th anniversary ofa school as great as ours we should recognize a champion in his field, and an outstanding student. He has chalked up an impressive record, headed by the South- western Golf Championship, which he won at Ft. Worth inMarch, 1947. His record: 1945 Shreveport - Medalist, Premier Tournament - Medalist. 1946 Brook Hollow, Dallas-Amateur Championship, Marshall Invita- tion, San Antonio junior State Golf Invitation - Quarter -Finals, Palestine Invitation - Semi-Finals, and Beaumont junior State - Finalist. 1947 Southwestern Golf Tournament, Ft. Worth - Champion. Bobby joe played in all the Pro-Amateur weekly tourneys in East Texas and because of his sterling play, was made a captain of one of the teams. We, the students of Pint Tree High School, wish him the best in the game, and hope that some day in the near future he will be National Champion. TRACK V- .kw-a,.',- ,,,,, I- Z A 1 -U X l ,,, l -vez.
