Nice try. Bill J.' Monkey Pile ii Who has the ball?? The Tigers of 1959 picked as their Tri-Captains: Bill Gilman, Gene Rubey, and Jim 'Wilcox. They did a fine job of leading a great team coached by Mr. Rezanka and assistant coach, Mr. Papke. The Tigers were the smallest in size, but the largest in desire this season and never gave up trying from beginning to the end. After several weeks of practice, the Tigers were ready for the opening non-conference game with Northome. The Tigers won 60 to 0. They next met Pequot lakes in the first conference game; the score this time. Pine River 37, Pequot 6. The Tigers then journeyed to Walker to play in a rain storm, where they lost a heartbreaker 7 to 6. Cass Lake then lost to the Tigers 26 to 20. The beginning of the third round of the conference saw the Tigers journey to Pequot Lakes and thump the Indians U0 to 7. The Tigers then had another chance with Walker and gave it all they had, but the breaks just were not with them and they lost 13 to 12. Still smarting from these two one point losses to ’Walker, the Tigers roared back to whip Cass Lake W to 6 and Pillager 5 to 6 to end a very successful season. The Tigers scored 2?6 points to the opponents 65. Bill Gilman, Gene Rubey, Jim 'Wilcox, David Gilchrist, and Larry Johnson were selected on the All Conference team. Bill Gilman was awarded the highest honor a football player can receive in being named AIL STATE BACK. To our knowledge, Bill is the first to receive this honor in Pine River’s football history. I P N I c N 1959 Baseball Tigers are Bast Sub-District Champs E R I V E R D R Y C L E A N E R The Pine River Tigers had an up hill fight all season to bring home the East Sub District Championship for the second straight year. Coach Dick Rezanka and assistant coach, Roger Schroers, were very pleased with the results of the 5j season. The Tigers opened with a win over Pequot Lakes 7 to 5, then lost a game to Pillager 6 to It which proved to be the game that cost them the Crow Wing Crown. The Tigers then won the next three games 2 to 1 with Motley, 6 to 1 with Pillager and 5 to U again with Motley. The final game of the regular season found Pine River olaying against Pequot Lakes, both teams having identical records, playing for the Championship of the Crow Wing Valley Conference. The Tigers lost this one 6 to 2, but came roaring back to gain the finals of the sub district playoff beating Pillager 7 to 2. Again they were playing the same team, Pequot Lakes. Coach Rezanka picked Bob Kangas captain of the Tigers to pitch this important game. He turned in a fine performance shutting out the Indians and allowing them only two hits. The Tigers won the East Sub-District Championship 2 to 0. In the district playoffs, the Tigers lost to a strong New York Mills squad 11 to 7.
