Football The 1938 Tiger Football Squad completed the finest grid season in many years with a splendid 6 and 2 record, and ending up second in the Northern Lltes Conference. The Tigers opened the 58 campaign with a non conference game with Red Lake. With the boys showing exceptional early season poise, they blasted the opposition 58 to 0. The next week found the Orange and Black doing battle with the 1957 Champs, Cass Lake, which was a hard fought battle from the opening kickoff until the final gun sounded. The Tigers were again victorious 26 to 13. The third game of the season was with our traditional rival Pequot Lakes. In this evenly fought game each team scored two touchdowns but the Indians managed to put across one extra point which was the deciding factor in the Tigers first loss of the season 13 to 12. The next week the Tigers played previously undefeated Northome. The Tigers were again victorious 26 to 21. The next week found the Tigers on their home field against the strong Walker squad. Although we were able to gain 275 yards on the ground and in the air to Walker's 350 total yards the Tigers were beaten 54 to 20. The Tiger's pride was hurt but their spirit was not and they came roaring back to defeat the next three opponents. Pillager was first to fall to the Tiger onslaught 65 to 6., and then Cass Lake 45 to 7. Then came the final game of the season with Pequot Lakes. The Tigers had one thing in mind that day and that was victory, and they were determined not to let a single point spell victory or defeat. When the final gun sounded on the 58 season the Tigers had amassed a 47 to 12 victory which will long be remembered with the players, coaches and fans of Pine River. During the 58 campaign the Tigers had scored 299 points to the opponents 126. Coach Dick Rezanka and Assistant Coach Roger Schorers were proud of this squad which showed treraemdous spirit and determination throughout the entire season. When the Northern Lites All-Conference Team was picked four of the Tigers were on this honor roll; they were Fullback Ralph Langenbau, Halfback Jim Gushwa, End Bill Cromett, and Quarterback Bill Gilman.
