Although the Tigers had a 15 point lead when the meet was over, they were not assured of victory until the final points were tallied. The Tigers were spurred to an all out team effort and by mid-afternoon there was only a 2 1 2 point spread between Pine River, Verndale and Sebeka. Pine River wt s holding the lead by one point. This margin remained about the same until the second to the last event which was the 880 yard dash. When the dust had cleared. Pine River had garnered enough points so they could not be beaten regardless of what happened in the relay, which was the last event of the day. However, the Tiger cindermen were not satisfied and went on to win first place in the relay too and emerged a very definite championsnip team. In the Park-Lake Region track meet held at New York Mills on Wednesday, May 1, the Pine River Tigers were able to garner enough points to win third place. There were 12 schools and about 120 boys participating in this meet. The Tigers were paced by co-captains Eldon Hopper and Bill Ellis, and Ervin Bannister, who won first places in their events. The team has chosen Leroy Gardner and Tommy Mudd as co-captains for the 1958 season. 28 PINE RIVER STATE BANK SUMMARY OF PLACES IN CONFERENCE MEET 100 yard dash—-—- Jokela, 3rd 220 yard dash-------- Ostrom, 2nd Jokela, l th I1I4.O yard dash----- Ellis , 1st Bjore , 2nd 880 yard dash--------Wilcox, 2nd Mile run---— E, Bannister, 1st A, Bannister, 5th Low hurdles----------Hopper, 1st High hurdles---------Hopper, 3rd 880 yard relay------- Ellis , Ostrom, Jokela, Hopper, 1st High jump-----------Gardner, 5th Pole vault----------- Ellis , 1st Broad Jump--------- Gilman, 3rd Mudd, Wilcox, 5th Discuss------------Riley , 1st Snot putt------------ Riley , 5th Faster, Eldon!
