Ona is the jolly one of the class, No one will ever take her place, The teachers think she's quite a lass, And in Father Time's great history, she’ll always leave a trace. Dale likes his girls quite small. And thats a fact we all know, He has not set his ambition as yet, But he might give the Navy a try after all. Dolores like Florence Nightingale wants to be a nurse And all of us wish her a great deal of success, To go down in history as one of the best, With a willing and courageous heart full of zest. Shirley is our grown up lass. She’ll never worry about how to pass, When her admiral comes home, Sis, won’t have to wonder where to roam. AND SO YOU HAVE THE CLASS OF ’49, WE ALL WORKED TOGETHER AND GOT ALONG FINE, WE ALL THANK THE TEACHERS WHO GOT US WHERE WE ARE, AND HOPE THE OTHER CLASSES GET ALONG AS FAR. 11

 CLASS POEM WE'RE THE CLASS OF FORTY NINE WE'VE BEEN TOGETHER FOR TWELVE LONG YEARS, WE PREPARED OURSELVES THUS FAR FOR LIFE AND NOW FOR OUR FUTURES AND OUR CAREERS. Florence is the scholar of our class. She’s tall, and quite a stately lass, She’s also captain of the Basketball team, And when on the floor she's got the steam. Karl has a serious mind - The girls all think he's quite a find. At sports he's always on the top. His newspaper columns are never a flop. Buelah is a lightweight and in her eyes a gleam. For such a little girl she’s really on the beam. The clergy seems to be her ambition To go to darkest Africa and a build a great mission. Bob will be our sailor man- He may sail to China or possibly Japan, But there is one thing we all know-He’ll have a girl where ever he may go. Avis is plump and always happy She always wears a smile. Her cheeks are rosy as a day in May, And a girl we’d all like to have around awhile. William is the silent type. He seldom cracks a smile. At times he’s serious, and at others gay, But all in all he's just good May. Joanne is our cute little fashion plate To marry will be her fate, She always loves to dance and sing. And also gives Basketball quite a fling. And in our class always smart. The tall and handsome student, Jack, No girl has yet to steal his heart. But in debating he has a knack. The one that’s short, cute and blond, The one the boys say is their atom bomb, The one that will be Tommies doom Well sure, you guessed it Millie Bloom. Harold in sports is our hero. With Hazel his score is never zero. He's a gay lad with a sense of humor, And with most of the girls he’s quite a crooner. 10

» CLASS PROPHECY As we look into the future to the year 1959 we find Backus High graduates of 1949 living in various parts of the world. Ona Barchus is operator of the popular Men-All Shapes and Descriptions” Escort Bureau in New York but she still hasn't found a permanent escort for herself. Our tattooed sailor, Bob Kline, has sailed the seven seas and has seen the “far away places” he dreamed about while sleeping in classes at B.H.S. He has a girlfriend in every port but still has not married. Dolores Finney decided to take a “Slow Boat to China” where she is a missionary. Harold S. (stands for Sonny) Beggs, who made his first million dollars as an “honest” criminal lawyer, decided to go into politics and be a Baby-Kissing” politician (babies up to twenty one years) Deep in the African jungles we find missionary Karl Zaffke showing the light to natives. Somewhere on the same continent in a similar occupation is Buelah Shepard. The retired Senator Fogbound has been replaced by J. Calvin McDowell as foreign minister to Lower Slobovia. They send him on friendly missions to Lower Slobovia because when he's in Congress he holds up so much legislation with his longwinded filibusters. Avis Bartlett is owner and operator of “You Can be Beautiful In ten Easy Steps” Beauty Shop in Backus. Mildred Bloom is now conductor of Bloom’s All-Girl Orchestra” in New York. They are going to tour the country and expect to appear in Backus soon. Florence Fowler was secretary to Julius F. Higgenbothem, the oil millionaire in Dallas, Texas, until she married the bosses son. Anyone want to buy a forty acre farm in northern Alaska? A cabin in the Sahara Desert? Call on William May, the successful real estate agent. His motto is For house or farm or cozy nook. Deal with May - he is no crook .
