Symons in partial repayment and tribute for his devotion, interest, and guidance over the past years. Mr. Symons' intellectual and per- sonal counsel has always been respected and sought after by all who have known him. Reared in Aliquippa, Mr. Symons attended Ali- quippa High School previous to his entrance into Edinborough State College. After he was graduated, he became an instructor at Richland and continued his education at Geneva College and the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Symons will study at the University of Illinois next year. The senior class is indebted to Mr. Symons for all he has given us. It is with all sincerity that we wish him every success in his future endeavors. gn Memoriam .xmas- MISS HELEN HALUSHCHAK Each teacher was respon- sible for the destiny of America, because the pupils came under his influence. The teacher held the destiny of a great country in his hand as no member of any other profession could hold it. Conlin High School Principal Assistant High School Principal A Special Year Every high school or college senior reflects upon his last year in school as being a special year, one in which it seems that all the events of previous years are crowded into one short period of time. However, the assassination of our President and the death of a beloved teacher sets this past school year aside with special memories that will remain with us for many years to come. In tribute to both, it behooves each of us to live our lives in the same light that they shed upon our country and school. With the memories of this special year firmly fixed in mind, may we all be rededicated to the major task of this life-that of serving God and our fellow man. Putting together a book with this aim is a tremendous undertaking, and required countless hours of work on the part of the editors, the staff, and the advisor. As the year progressed, there was planning to be done, copy to be written, photographs to be taken and developed, pages to be dummied, and sub- scriptions to be sold. Through the diligent work of the editors and staff, the task was successfully completed. With the hope that the yearbook will provide the students with pleasant memories for many years to come, the entire staff presents this, the 1964 Rambler. Jack danced up a storm!!! Ram Page The Ram Page is once again on the top of the list for stating the achievements of the students. This paper, as in past years, is a project done by the students and sponsored by Mr. D. K. Strayer. Richland High School can be proud of its paper and of the students behind its making. There is hard work being put forth for the paper. Because of a rigid schedule the North Hills News-Record must follow, the Ram Page comes out twice a month. Our paper is not the only one put into the North Hills News- Record, therefore, we must wait our turn. In the meantime, the reporters of the paper are constantly looking for stories and features to fill our page. The Ram Page will live to be a fine paper put out by the students of Richland High School. First Row: E. Kress, S. McGuire, B. Redman, D. Steigerwald, G. Martin. Second Row: J. Walsh, A. Tooke, J. The organization is self-financed, obtaining its funds by sponsoring vari- ous extra-curricular activities-the Talent Showbeing the largest of the year. The Student Councilpromotes school pride by setting high standards in both leader- ship and scholarship. One of the main goals of the Council is to create a harmonious atmosphere in which scholastic, athletic, and extracurricular ac- tivities can be performed. During the past year, the long awaited revision in the constitution was made, many traditions were improved upon, and a new audio system for dances was put at the disposal of all clubs. First Row: J. Student Directors This year's senior class play, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House drew a large audience-one of the largest in Richland's history. Under the direction of Miss Halushchak and student directors, Judy Rooker and Eric Kraley, the cast gave a performance that will long be remembered. Jim Blandings, played by Chip Marinella, attempts to re- model a house in the suburbs so that his family might move to the country. His problems begin when a water supply can not be found and his daughters can not adjust to the country life. His troubles increase as the Ladies Historical Society fought his rebuilding all the way. Costs kept rising because of the little changes his wife thought necessary, and he was on the brink of losing his job. Everything worked out beautifully, however, and it looked as if country life was not going to be so bad. A successful performance did not come overnight. Many weeks were spent rehearsing and mastering lines. Those weeks were memorable, eating dinners in the cafeteria, doing homework on the run, learning lines between classes, repeat- ing and repeating lines. The committees also had a hard job, acquiring the beautiful furnishings, advertising, and preparing make-up. It seemed that opening night came all to quickly, but the honest hard work paid off in a performance that kept the audience in stitches for its entire length. CAST . . . . . . Eugene Marinella . . . Early planning resulted in having everything running smoothly, down to the smallest detail. A March to Freeport on Friday night started the week- end off perfectly. Students with flashlights followed the pep band around the grounds and then met in the gym for a spirited pep rally. On Saturday afternoon came the game with Freeport. Excellent weather conditions prevailed. The parade of floats preceded the game, with the Metal Shop Club winning first prize. At half time the float of the queen, Virginia Pickard, and her two attendants, Barbara West and Lynda States, came onto the field. The queen was crowned by Wally Jack- son, President of Student Council, while the band played Miss America. Although the football game that afternoon was lost, the spirit was tremendous. Saturday night's home- coming dance-The Mardi Gras Ball-was a perfect finishing touch to a perfect weekend. An exceptionally large turnout of students danced the evening away in Mardi-Gras sur- roundings. This was truly a weekend to be remembered. The Queen and her ' 4- on court. The '64 Rams Varsity Basketball team had a streak of bad luck and managed to win only four games. John Garber, along with Dave Nepereny and Jerry Purvis, led the team in scoring. The rebounding duties were assigned to Steve Lewicke and John Garber. Richland's Varsity Basketball team com- piled a 5-3 record in the exhibition season. They defeated Verona, Knoch, Franklin, Free- port, and Evans City. They lost twice to Mars and once to West Deer. In the first half of the regular season, Richland won two and lost five. Our first game was a 61-56 victory over North Allegheny. In our second game, North Hills handed us our first defeat by a score of 65-45. The Rams then lost to Moon, Shaler, Quaker Valley, and Montour before returning to the win column with a 60-43 victory over Hampton. North Allegheny got their revenge with a 47-33 victory and North Hills gained their second win '74-44. It was Richland's turn for revenge over Moon, 63-60. Although the pic- ture was black for the next three games with three losses, 66-42 to Shaler, '79-29 to Quaker Valley, and 66-45 to Montour, the excitement of the season was turned loose at our final game. Hampton journeyed to Richland and the battle was on. Richland gained the lead at half time and were determined not to falter as they had done in previous games. The result was an exhilarating '76-50 victory over Hampton. John Garber, team captain, was the seasons high scorer with 326 points. He was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award at the Mars Holiday. John scored 26 points against Evans City and 24 points against Mars. Other outstanding members of the 1964 Richland Basketball team were Dave Nepereny, Jerry Purvis, Steve Lewicke and Ken Voegler. Nepereny, co-captain and 1963 Most Valuable Player, had an impressive 274 points for the season. Steve Lewicke was an outstanding defensive specialist and exhibited his talents in the hard fought games against Shaler and Moon. Purvis and Voegler were very effective ball handlers and kept the opposition confused. 61 2 gi Qu , ip Q S L .
