The 1960 RAM BLER ' s Table of Contents page 7 page I9 Dedication Mr. McDonough was born in Pittsburgh and he attended Swissvale High School. He graduated from Clarion State Teachers College. At Richland, his work includes teaching prob- lems of democracy, driver education, and coach- ing the tennis team. We hope Mr. McDonough remains at Richland for many years, so that future classes will have the pleasure of know- ing him. We leave Richland with the memory of many wonderful moments. Thank you, Mr. McDonough, for your contribution to our past and our future. L yiyvfjial 51357 WEST! Yfifi XSSYIZR liz! SM ,.., - nv... i wif,-,-., 5 w K, 1, x-5. 1 ,..v.... The graduating class of 1960 is indebted to you for your work as a teacher, your guidance as a sponsor, and your friendship and interest toward everyone of us. The Building speaks . With The Building I am dedicated to you, the graduating student. My teachers have educated you. My clubs have knitted you closely together. My sports have infused you with the spirit of sportsmanship and team co-operation. I have built your dreams, witnessed your dis- appointments, nourished your desires, shaped your principles. What I have done for you can never be undone, but it can be Wasted. I have given my gifts and the only return I ask is that you use them to their fullest. Always ready to guide each student through difliculties, to advise with problems, to help pick up the pieces should they fall. Sympathetic, patient, strict, lenient, kind, force- ful, and generous are they. They have given you the base on which you stand. They have helped you organize clubs, coach teams, and choose your life's work. Their hearts beat out a life devoted to you. Administration Back row: Alton R. Knott, Raul A. Hunter, Howard S. ALFRED JACQUES MR. FRED LANG Supervising Principal Assistant Supervising Principal 8 Principal During your last month of school, as you pre- pared for commencement activities, I am sure that you were aware of mixed feelings. You realized a sense of accomplishment because a long-sought and awaited goal had been reached, and you were saddened by the realization that many cherished friendships would be terminated. Mingled with this sense of accomplishment and feeling of sadness were thoughts of the fu- ture. I am certain that many of you, as you thought about the future, were aware of the newness of the life you are entering upon. It is my sincerest wish that you, the first gradu- ating class to receive four years of education at Richland High School, will be secure in this newness, and that, as the years pass, when- ever you pause and meditate along life's way, you will feel that the training and knowledge re- ceived at Richland High School helped shape your lives and make them successful and fruit- ful. cw 56.0440 Ass't Principal Administration MR. They will always be remembered, not only for the subjects they taught, but for the guidance and help they have given us in so many ways. Their actions and assistance will always be a part of our memories. For this, the Seniors would like to say ..... Mr. Richard Dilts These are the ones to whom I have given my all. My tender care has carried them now to the summit the finish, the end. They can never forget what I have added to their lives. Without it, where would they be? But with it, how high will they rise? They have taken my gifts and they leave me satisfied, knowing they will not waste, but rather will use them wisely. They have striven for superiority and met the challenge of opposition. They have felt the heartbeat of my faculty. I send them forth with enduring friendships, learning, pride and sportsmanship. But most of all, they send themselves forth to great ac- complishment. 7 Class of 1960 C? R. Lang, pres. J. Fusca, v.-pres. This was the year of newness for us: new faces, new building, new teachers, and a new experience--high school. We entered our new life with zest. We participated in athletics and joined school clubsg some of us were members of the first Student Council. But even with all the excitement, there was the never-ending school work. Even that had a quality of new- ness: foreign languages were new, shop and home economics were required, and some of us had math with crazy x's and y's in it instead of numerals. I2 ,s ' , H: S. Moran, treas. J' Latham, sec. Our junior year began with a sponsor change, as Miss Oliver had become Mrs. Bresnicky. We got our rings that fall. Then we faced the prob- lem of financing our prom. We had a magazine campaign as our first project, then there was our annual bake sale and the dance after the Hampton basketball game. The May Court was chosen from our class. Six of our boys and nine girls were members. Finally the prom was held May 22, at Pitt Wildwood Country Club .... the scene of a wonderful time. Our sophomore year was a little more or- ganized. For the first time we had sponsors, Miss Oliver, and Mr. Bresnicky, and officers. We had enough foresight to realize that we would have to finance a prom the next year, so we began to think of money-raising projects. After much discussion we decided on a bake sale and a dance. This was the year that biology was the main topic of discussion. How well we remember the operations we performed! 20 The last year, our senior year, was a mixture of all things: fun, laughter, hard work, laziness, apprehension, and a little regret. Here were school work, extra-curricular activities, and social activities-sometimes in overabundance. Mr. McDonough and Mrs. Wackenhut had taken over sponsorship of our class. We spent a great deal of our time in the guidance oflice. We ap- plied to colleges, prepared for jobs, or planned for our future in some way. When we graduated, we were ready, thanks to the never-ending help of faculty and friends. MARTHA M. The feeling of pride and achievement at win- ning, the disappointment at losing, are part of these gifts. What is more heart-warming than to hear the encouraging shouts: Go, team, go! Fight, team, fight! The dazzling run, the goal line stand, the long shot swishing through the net, the hard-hit ball that curves away from the outfielder! But more than these is the spirit of the game: the will to win, the grit to see it thru to the end, whether winning or losing. These I taught you and these I send forth with you. Baseball 1st Row: C. Captained by Stew Gloyer and Larry Sullivan and coached by Richard Dilts, the team swept to victories over Knoch, Verona, Aspinwall, West Deer, and Mars, our closest rival. The Rams dropped several games by a margin of less than ten points. The business staff devoted long hours to getting subscriptions, figuring expenses, and combing the area for advertisements. I have examined the individual rec- ords of the work done in dramatics of these individuals, and I can vouch that each one has earned the points set up in the National Constitution and our own troupe constitution and is eligible for the honor of membership. These are the words of the clerk as one becomes a member of the National Thespian Society. Each member has worked his way up by starting in Dramatics Club and getting points. When a sufficient number of points have been earned, that person is eligible to become a Thespian. Thespians lead the work done on this year's plays and aided in many other school productions. When they were given the opportunity, they went to see plays put on by various groups. Each member is given a Thespian pin which he wears proudly as he remembers the Thespian motto, Act well your part, there all the honor lies. Dramatics Club First Row: J. Taylor, S. Moran, H. Some of the events were a hilarious Hal- loween party, the Shamrock Swing, a swimming party, Sports Day, and our annual picnic. Many of you may have one of the scholar or cheerleader dolls sold to make money for the club. Each year any boy who has won at least one varsity letter will become a member of the Richland Varsity Club. From the beginning of the school year until the end, the Varsity Club is busy raising money for the club. Money made by the club was distributed to the various athletic teams to help meet the cost of sports equipment. However, the pri- mary function is to raise enough money to buy varsity jackets for all members to have earned them' Officers and Sponso r: D. Fullerton, L. Sullivan, Mr. Dilts, S. Gloyer, A. Herald D. Knauss and B. Datt Junior High Wonder-eyed, confused, and frightened are these of my world as they enter my arms. They wonder at my opportunities, are confused with my jig-saw hallways and mixed-up schedules, scared stiff at the tall and mighty older students.
