FRANCIS W. STANTON Supervising Principal MR. ROCHE'S MESSAGE Avoid becoming a slave to too many activities and meetings. EDWARD J. ROCHE Elementary Supervisor We Thank You OUR PARENTS OUR TEACHERS OUR FRIENDS It is strange that when our hearts are filled with gratitude for all that you have done for us, we find words inadequate to express our sincerest thoughts. All the years of our lives, you have guided, guarded, sheltered, clothed, advised us, and helped us whenever we have needed your as- sistance. Now that we have achieved a certain measure of success by graduating from High School, we realize that it is only through your efforts that this has been possible, and the only way we have of show- ing our appreciation is by saying these three simple words, WE THANK YOU! By our leading worthwhile lives, we hope that you will be proud of us and glad that you have had a share in making us what we are and what we hope to be. Better a little bit of chiding, than a great deal of heartbreak. ■ v MR. LESLIE BARTON Physical Education MRS. ELEANOR BECKWITH Intermediate Grades MR. ANN ALBERTSEN JO-ANN AGNELLI SHIRLEY PLACE HEATHER WILLIAMS Prompters JO-ANN AGNELLI ANN ALBERTSEN Class Poem '59 FOREVER Returning to school In the early fall, The crisp leaves fell And covered all. They covered the unused football quad; They covered the students at their play They covered the doubts but could not allay The feeling that time Was moving fast, Moving fast, Toward the last. Coming back from the Basketball games. The crisp snow fell On old Pine Plains. It covered the bus with its cheering squad; It covered the students laughing, gay; It covered the doubts but could not allay The feeling that time Was moving fast, Moving fast, Toward the last. Studying to pass In the early spring, The rain came down On everything. It covered the elms, the thawing sod; It covered the students in its way; It covered the doubts but could not allay The feeling that time Was moving fast, Moving fast. Toward the last. Beginning to meet On the growing lawn. The sun shone down Each early morn. It revealed the land, yard by yard; It revealed the students at their play; It revealed the doubts and did not allay The knowledge that time Had moved too fast. Moved too fast, Now, the last. This time next year The leaves here now Will have fallen. And the bough Of the elm upon the lawn Countless snows and rains have borne. All the seasons will have passed Since this time we call the last And next year, though short in space, Will find obscured some well-known face, Who was that boy in social studies? (I know that he and Jack were buddies.) Who sat in math, across the way? And who was in the senior play? All these memories growing dim But still all there beyond the Rim. Until the end, to see it yet And half remember, half forget. Margaret Hambrecht Class Will Not of sane mind, and really gone, we leave you all to carry on. And with demise close in view, we leave the following things to: The School: Two empty homerooms from which we now pass. The Faculty: Two months of rest 'fore the next Senior class. The SENIORS presented ’HANSEL AND GRETEL' December 17 - The SENIORS won name and fame with their production of EVER SINCE EVE. December 22 - To the strains of lilting music, the SENIORS danced happily at their CRYSTAL BALL. June 5 - The SENIORS proudly present the 1959 PINE LOG. June 22 - The SENIORS take their last curtain call in PINE PLAINS CENTRAL SCHOOL. n This Is Your Class Mr. Perry — Mrs. Kunitz These are your students, and you have the right to be proud of them because for the first time in history, each member of a senior class has gone successfully into the field of his choice. First, all the way from Typical Central School, we have these school teachers: Oliver Orton from the Eighth Grade Social Studies class; from the Kindergarten, Jo-Ann Agnelli; from the First Grade, Linda Hermans; and David Battistoni, Physical Education teacher. Also working at Typical Central School is Nancy Rankin, who is head of the Home Economics Department. Directing the School Caf- eteria is dietitian, Nancy Lamont. She is supervised by the State Food Specialist, Fran Noring. Serving gallantly with the Coast Guard are David Lawson, Lloyd Kellerhouse, Norman Fulton, and Joseph Amelio. Joan Camburn joined the Women's Armed Forces, and Richard Swart became a Marine. There was one member of your class who entered the literary field and is now editor of one of the largest magazines. She is Margaret Hambrecht, who brought honor to herself and the countries of the world for her book on International Peace. Her three secretaries are: Susan Layton, Jaunita Reilly, and Thekla Salomon. During the writing of her book, she was assisted by Pat Larkin, the Linguist. Our spies have discovered that neither the Perry nor the Kunitz family has enjoyed a vacation for many years. Therefore, we have arranged with Jack Harrington, the owner of a fabulous hotel on the Riviera to entertain you, Mr. and Mrs. Perry and Mr. and Mrs Kunitz, during the racing season. Before we give you the details of your vacation we would like to mention that this famous resort hotel was built by the James Filippini Construction Company, with the engineer, Johnthan MacPherson, and the designer, George Hatch. All the lumber used came from the Robert Cafiero Lumber Company. Working at the hotel as Accountants are Clifford Thorpe and John Koch. Joanne Horton is the head Cashier. This Is Your Class — continued i®5 During your holiday you need not worry about your children as they will stay at the Heather William's Nursery for children of vacationing parents. Also, your pets will be cared for in Kathy Van Sant's Pet Shop. You will not have to worry about locating a beauty parlor while on your trip, because Shirley Pitcher's Beauty Salon is located in the hotel. Shirley and her assistant, Laura Hamburger, will be glad to meet your every desire at no charge to you. The mechanics - Jack Meccariello, Dennis Clark, Gerald Knicker- bocker, and Richard Monteforte - will give expert service to your cars; and to add to your pleasure the nurses - Betty Eisen and Dawn Rozell - will be at your service. To preserve your memories of this journey, we have arranged for you to call on the Hotel Stenographers to take down in detail all your impressions. They are Judy Brennan, Barbara Byrnes, Judy MacDonald, and Marcia McGhee. For your enjoyment, while you are staying at the hotel, there will be a cultural fair going on featuring: Pat Valentine, a wonderful ac- tress; Judy Schaehrer and her assistant, Ann Albertson, will speak on their work as Educational Leaders; Fred Rieck will have an Electronics Demonstration; and Richard Elliott will have an exhibit of, All About Chemicals. Your vacation would not be complete without souvenirs. Across the street from the Hotel is Kathy Hulls' Gift Shop, a great tourist at- traction, where you can buy mementos for yourselves and your friends. We hope your vacation will be an enjoyable one and to make all things complete, here are the remaining members of your class: Jon Barrett, a successful farmer. John Egan and Enrico Peppe, Famous Labor Leaders. Helen Brands, Arthena Kemp, Shirley Place, Diana Clum, and Gertrude Hohmann, efficient Secretaries. BON VOYAGE! The title, National Honor Society, is self explanatory. It means just what it says. It is a national society consisting of students throughout the nation, who, by their out- standing qualities have earned the right to belong to this group. The word honor is de- fined as meaning fidelity, courage and respect. Each candidate must qualify on four points--Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service. To become a member of this organization is one of the highest honors that can be conferred upon any student. Kindness is nobility's true badge. Track LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Kunitz, W. Schutz, J. Under the guidance of Mr. Mavodones, Cross Country came to Pine Plains to keep the school colors in competition with other schools since football was taking a respite. The harriers practiced daily with little fanfare. They diligently paced each other with enthusiasm and encouragement. Since this was their first season in this sport, the team only had three meets; Arlington, Beacon and the Sectional Championship Meet. Although the team didn’t return any trophies to the Halls ol Pine Plains, they nevertheless earned the warm respect and friendship of all they competed against. The mainstays of the team were W. Schutz, R. Hetherington, L. Galm, K. Knapp, A. Sauter, A. Sturdivant, D. Battistoni. Last Spring Pine Plains also fielded a small track team under the guidance and coaching of Mr. Mavodones. This group garnered six medals in the Dutchess County Track Meet in their class. Again the participants earned a high degree of respect from their competitors. Returning from last season were Bill Schutz, Jack Harrington, Jon MacPherson, Jim Filippini, John Soracco, George Hatch and Richard Monteforte. Those making the grade this year were Irv Haight, Louis Galm, Cliff Hill, Dick Scholz and freshman Roger Herman. The starting five were Captain Bill Schutz, Jack Harrington, Jim Filippini, John Soracco, with Dick Scholz and Cliff Hill sharing the number five slot. Pine Plains started the 1958-59 season by playing two non-league games. They were victorious, defeating Webutuck, 52-21, and Roe-Jan, 47-41. Bill Schutz did most of the scoring. The Plainsmen played three more games before Christmas vacation. They defeated Oakwood, 59-41, Arlington, 71-51, and Red Hook, 65-46. Bill Schutz and Jack Harrington were the top scorers. After Christmas vacation, they played four games which weren't the best played by the Plainsmen. They defeated Webutuck, 43-24, and Staatsburg, 39-37. The Plainsmen finally suffered a loss when Wappingers Fall defeated them to the tune of 55-29. The next team to attack the Plainsmen was Roe- Jan. The boys, having a bit of trouble, suffered another loss with a 46-39 decision. The next two games played by the Plainsmen proved to be victorious. They defeated Oakwood and Wappingers with scores of 45-27 and 53-51, respectively. The Plainsmen then came up against Red Hook, who proved to be a tough opponent. They lost with a close 36-35 decision. The following two games played against Staatsburg and Tivoli were two more victories for Pine Plains with 43-40 and 69-42 respective scores. The Plainsmen again met with Tivoli, marking another victory (64-28), thus wrapping it up for the Pine Plains Bombers and giving them the League trophy. Respectfully The Staff of the 1959 Pine Log CHALLENGE OF OUR TIMES Man over the centuries, and particularly in the last 100 years, has advanced in the scientific and technological fields at an almost phenomenal rate. At the same time, he has oftenbeen accused of faltering badly in his own self- development. Education today, more than ever before, holds the solution to this dilemma. For it is here, in our grade schools, high schools, colleges and universities, that science and the humanities share their most important meeting ground. And it comes at a time in man's life when his mind is in its most formative stages; when he displays a sincere and intense desire to seek out the truth and incorporate his findings in the goals of years to come. The destiny of our civilization will be decided by how successfully man can meet the challenge of our times; whether he can develop the tolerance and understanding necessary to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
