Text from Pages 1 - 90 of the 1957 volume:

For your faithful leadership and your efforts in making our years at Pine Grove rich in meaningful and happy experiences, we sincerely hope that you will be as richly rewarded throughout your life as your knowl- edge and understanding has so greatly re- warded us. For your loyalty and guidance, the Seniors of 1957, in recognition of your challenging example, dedicate this edition of the 'Eagles Aerie to you. . . Mr. Donald EmoryGer- lock. BOARI) OF EDUCATION P. G. WILLIAM Chairman TALLY LAWSON C. W. MEACHAM Superintendent C. R. LARUS J. O. TOUCH TON L. A. WISENBAKER S. L. JONES TRUSTEES JAMES BILES HENRY TOUCHTON PINE GROVE HIGH SCHOOL O. E. GERLOCK VALDOSTA GEORGIA TRUSTEES: Sanford Jones Henry touchton James H. Biles BOARD MEMBER j. o. Touchton To the Senior Class of 1957 I write the following with deep sincerity. Long ago your education commenced at your Mother's knee and every word spoken, every deed done since that time has influenced your life as you in turn have influenced the lives of others. And now one of the major milestones in your preparation for life has been reached. You now leave high school to help in your fashion to mold the future of a community, a state, a nation. Another phase of your education now begins. I trust you all to carry with you a sincerity of purpose, an honesty, a loyalty, a fair share of all those attributes that you must have to build a strong Christian world. Our nation, as all nations, stands in greater need of the application of these fundamental principles than ever before and we look to the youth of today for a better tomorrow. For the faculty of this school I write that we hope we have provided you with enough of the moral, as well as the educational, needs to face the world. We ask you to remember: Have a loyal heart, have a spirit brave, Have a soul that is pure and true; Then give to the world the best you have And the best will come back to you. Sincerely, ANNUAL STAFF TILLMAN MOORE Editor RICHARD DELOACH Associate Editor We trust the enclosed memories will bring many happy recollec- tions of school days gone by. Class members not only partic- ipated in their class functions but also were highly active in other school activities. The class was represented on the athletic squad, the Literary events and in nearly all school activities. In addition to a highly successful class play the Juniors also held the most successful school banquet. We trust they will move into their final Senior year determined to establish new records for their class and their school. We have entered actively into extracurricular activities with twelve members participating in the basketball teams. We have also enjoyed four class parties during the year. Our class has been well represented in all of the school clubs. We hope that during our coming two school years we will continue to improve and to help our school go even higher on the ladder of success. Our hope of course is that next years Junior class will be the finest ever. We also wish to express our thanks to Mr. Folsom, our homeroom teacher and to all our other teachers of the 1956-57 term. During the year several members were on the basketball teams. We have had a series of parties and a trip to Twin Lakes. Six of the girls served at the Junior-Senior Banquet and several members were in the One-Act Play. We also had two booths at the Halloween Carnival. CARTER The Pine Grove Eagles, coached by Mr. E. B. Folsom, again fought through a successful year. Building around a small squad of veterans the squad progressed during the season until tournament time when the Eagles claws, properly sharpened, ripped through to the District finals and then lost by a very narrow margin. We regret losing such senior squad members as Marshall Moore, Richard DeLoach and James Henry Moore and we can only say that we will continue to do our best to fight as hard in the future and conduct our team play as well as these players have. Swinging into the season with a relatively new squad the Pine Grove Eaglettes moved slowly ahead in their training program and gradually provided keen competition for their many opponents. Always ready to give their best the squad displayed an earnest effort to win. Of this we are proud and we trust that such a spirit will continue. Such loyalty of purpose as has been displayed by Sarah Stalvey, Rose Mulligan and Lyn Touchton we will do our best to continue. The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization formed to help train the young woman of today to become better homemakers for tomorrow. The Pine Grove chapter of the Future Homemakers of America has been most active this past year. Early in the year they established their objectives and with the capable guidance of Mrs. Sadie Dobbins they reached all of their objectives and moved beyond them. New officers for the coming year were installed and following the installation they were entertained by a fashion show. The Pine Grove chapter has grown continuously more successful each year. We look with great pride on their accomplishments. With little publicity they move ahead to improve their school, their community, and themselves in a continual effort to prepare them- selves for tomorrow. We trust each year will prove as worthy as this one. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA President..SARA STALVEY Advisor....MRS. DOBBINS Some of the more outstanding events included attending the Spring and Fall district meetings, selling cosmetics to raise funds for the chapter, entertaining the F.H.A. members and their friends at a Valentine party, and the sending of two delegates to the annual state convention. Following a well-established practice the Tiny Tot Parade was also sponsored by the organization. All members also entertained their Mothers at a tea. TILLMAN MOORE President The Pine Grove Chapter of the Future Farmers of America concluded a most successful year. Actively participating in the many contests sponsored by the F.F.A. portion of the Agriculture program our boys again placed high in many events. Some of our successes were as follows: Marshall Moore won the District in Corn produc- tion, was County winner in Cotton and showed the Reserve Champion in the Fat Cattle Show; John Wilkerson won the Home Improvement Contest; Bobby Moore, District Pasture; Jack Bradford, June Strawder and Bobby Moore, Livestock Judging; Charles Lane, Champion Boar; David Webb, Gilt. Thus the boys successfully moved through another year. Much thanks is due Mr. M. J. Lane, the Chapter Advisor, for his efforts in helping the boys win in the many events. As a result of the points amassed by the Agriculture boys in the past Mr. Lane received the Honorary Degree of American Farmer. BETA CLUB “DUCAMUS ALLIS SERVIENDO 'll r i ii ta Ml President Vice President Secretary - - ■ Treasurer - - ■ TILLMAN MOORE LYN TOUCHTON - NELL COWART SARAH STALVEY The Beta Club is a national organization composed of those students who achieve a satisfactory level in scholarship, leadership, and actively participate in the schools activities. The Beta club has provided substitute teaching, office help, one free educational chapel program put on by the U.S. Zoological Society, and many other services to the school. Its growth has meant much to the school and we hope for continued success. FOUR-H CLUB President - -- -- -- -- -- -- - SUE COLE BURN Vice President - -- -- -- -- - JAMES COLE BURN Vice President - -- -- -- - GINGER WILKINSON Secretary................................PEGGY REDISH The Pine Grove 4-H Club has again completed a most outstanding year and can submit a fine record of accomplishment. Throughout the years the Pine Grove Chapter, aided by such persons as Mrs. Katharine Rogers, Mrs. Blythe Burnette. George Kessler and Haywood Watson, has continuously had a splendid record on a local, state and national level. During the 1956-57 school term two of the Pine Grove 4-H Club members attended the 4-H Club Dress Revue. They were Ginger Wilkinson and Ginger Davis. In the Corn Contest the Pine Grove Club had the top three corn growers in 4-H in Lowndes County. They were George Henry Brown. James Coleburn and Sue Coleburn. As a result of their success the Pine Grove Club was awarded fifty dollars for placing second in the South Central District. James Coleburn. sponsored by the Valdosta Lions Club, was chosen the first boy in the State of Georgia to have sheep as a project. James entered this agreement with the Valdosta Lions Club and has been working on this project for two years. During this term James won first place in the State Sheep Shear- ing Contest. He will next go to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago where he will compete for national honors. During the current year many members have had excellent home projects, participated in planting pine trees and devoted much of their time to this work. We hope that our club will continue to give us such a splendid record. We feel that soon we can again gain for our school another national honor as we have in the past. We wish to thank our President. Sue Coleburn. and our other leaders, Mr. Jack Wooten and Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Coleburn. who also received awards at the annual 4-H Banquet, for all their help. DEBATE TEAM The Debate team, consisting of Lyn Touchton, Terrel Ruis, Tillman Moore and Eddie Pike, won for the first time in the school history the Southern Division debate contest and placed Second in the District. A most difficult feat that we hope others can succeed in. SAFETY PATROL The Safety Patrol sponsored by Mr. Jewell Futch, Lowndes County Sheriff, has each year performed a most difficult task. Their duty is to help the bus drivers, law enforcement officers and the school administraction to make the busses as safe as possible. Walking over railroad crossings, helping children across highways and such duties make this a most important matter in the operation of the school. GLEE CLUB Each year the Glee Club prepares selections for the Christmas season and for the countywide program. This year, under the leadership of Mr. James Pitts, the Glee Club made great progress. LUNCHROOM Mrs. Copeland, Lunchroom Manager, Mrs. Boen, Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Simpson are highly respected members of our faculty. They have continuously, with the aid of Mr. Rouchen Horton, maintained a superior lunch program. BEST ALL-ROUND STUDENTS MOST ATHLETIC A Message to all— As with every plan there must be a beginning, so is it true of our Annual. The initial starting point, our very success, begins with the cooperation we have always been so fortunate in receiving from the merchants and friends of our school. This they have done by assuming a portion of our burden by sub- scribing generously in our advertising section. We of the Annual staff speak sincerely for the entire school when we say that it is our hope that all readers will leaf through our adver- tisers section and kindly remember those who have so kindly remem- bered us. The support our school has received from the merchants, the cit- izens, and all our friends provides us with great pride in our county and in our friends.
