Dedication This book is dedicated to our patents. Those who through the early morning hours, the heat of day, and the late hours of night have labored and loved in their continuous effort to pro- vide for us those things they felt were so necessary for our youth in preparation for the future. This dedication is brief but we trust that we, in turn, can provide for you, our parents, every reason for you to be justly proud of us and our achievements. We will make every effort to continue the good work you have begun. Kindly accept our dedication as one of our sincerest gifts . . . memory. Board of Education TALLY LAWSON J. O. TOUCHTON ■ JAMES DEWAR Superintendent L. A. W1SENBAKER S. L. JONES Board of Trustees J. H. TOUCHTON W. W. HITCHCOCK Principars Message To the Class of 1956: Some years ago James Russell Lowell wrote: Now is the high tide of the year” and indeed it is-- a high tide in your lives. The diploma you have received is the tangible evidence of goals set when your school years began. We hope this school has given you much, for you have helped us to build a better school. We, the teachers of Pine Grove, ask you to remember that you are now part of a great force which must help to keep this country sensible, peaceful and a free place to live. This was the goal of your fathers and their forbears, it is a worthy one for you. And now you take your place in the great procession of youth. As you march off into history may we wish you good fortune and a pleasant journey. Faculty MISS JOHNNIE V. STOKES MRS. FRANCES C. CARTER MRS. KARL SPRINGER MRS. W. A. DAVIS MISS ONICE P. DAVIS MRS. We have tried to record some of the laughter and the tears which we have shared in the Eagle's Nest, hoping these experiences will help us grow into bigger and better individuals. Seniors As the years slip by one is apt to forget the early days of youth and the faces of old classmates. Some of our old friends have left Pine Grove but many have been together throughout their entire school career. We, of the Annual staff, have endeavored to reach into the past and restore some of the memories once so clear to us. We have here part of our early beginning... the present Pine Grove Senior class as members of the second grade. BOBBY BOWEN FFA 1.2, 3, 4; Class Play 3; Baseball 1, 4. Dining the year they conducted an active magazine selling campaign to raise funds for the annual Junior-Senior banquet, they have already elected the Annual Staff, were ably represented in F. F. A. work by Lavell Conine who made a top com yield, several class members participated in the One-Act play that placed second in the state, and the class also sponsored the Valdosta State College Serenaders in a Chapel program. The class and officers have been most active and have participated in many school activities. With such effort we hope their progress will continue. S. L. They have had one of the chapel programs and have gotten an early start in making preparations for their Senior trip. During the year they had a Christmas, Valentine, and Halloween Party. Through the efforts of the coach. Miss Herring, and the sincere effort, clean play and good sportsmanship of the entire team, the Eaglettes have again proven themselves to be a highly competitive group of girls of whom our school is justly proud. It is with regret that we see such excellent athletes and fine sports as represented by Nell Peters, Betty Cowart, Nell Touchton, and Helen Zeigler, our graduating seniors, leave us. Working with many new members on the squad Coach Folsom's quintette entered the Southern Division tournament with what appeared to be dim prospects. How- ever the squad sparkled throughout the tournament, upset the contenders, and won the Southern Division championship. The squad scrapped valiantly only to lose in the Dis- trict to Surrency. Such spirit and determination in the face of difficult odds is most commendable. We hope the spirit of such graduating seniors as Hightower, lives on. Cheerleaders PATRICIA JOHN L. The Pine Grove F. H. A. chapter has been very active this year under their capable officers. The Pine Grove chapter was the leader in instituting the F. H. A. County Coun- cil for all the F. H. A. officers in Lowndes County. Nell Touchton was elected president of the council and Sara Stalvey was elected secretary. Two of the most outstanding projects of the year were the Tiny Tot Parade and the Talent Show. The members of the F. H. A. gave the Home Economics Department a new electric muter as a gift. Pine Grove was represented in both District meeting in Albany and at the State Convention in Atlanta, Ga. The efforts and the success of our girls was outstanding. This was a superior year for the Pine Grove F. F. A. chapter. A few of their many ac- complishments included winning the state pasture contest for the individual and chap- ter award; placed second in the district com contest and second in the county com con- test; third in the chapter bull contest; first in the county cotton contest. The chapter also had two one hundred bushel corn club members, and six of the boys were awarded the Geor- gia Planter degree. In addition to a fine chapter record, there were many individual prizes won by members of the chapter including first place in the dairy division and first place in showmanship in the South Georgia Legion Fair. We are most proud of our chapter and their achievements. The Pine Grove 4-H Club has again completed a most outstanding year and can sub- mit a fine record of accomplishments. Two members attended the South Central District Achievement meeting. These members. Sue Coleburn and Helen Zeigler, were most successful. Helen placed second in the State contest in Food Preparation in Atlanta and Sue was declared the State win- ner in Poultry Achievement contest. As a result Sue received a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago and there succeeded in placing second in the National Poultry Achievement contest. Four more of our members. David Pike, Shirley Zeigler. Sue Coleburn and Ruby McIntyre are members of the poultry chain. James Coleburn, sponsored by the Valdosta Lions Club, was chosen the first boy in the state of Georgia to have sheep as a project. James has, at present, thirty-four sheep. All members have cooperated well throughout the year. President - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Helen Zeigler Vice President ------------------------- John Davis Secretary -- - - --- ------------ --- John L. Dur- ing the present term, the club has furnished for all the school children the annual animal show by the United States Zoological Society, sent delegates to the Beta convention in Atlanta, Geor- gia, and has undertaken to compile the attendance and scholarship record of all students in the school. These will in turn be bound annually for the office files. All members have been most active and in appreciation a banquet was held during the clos- ing month of school.
