« PINE GROVE HIGH SCHOOL Valdosta, Georgia DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1955, proudly dedicate this annual to the parents and citizens of this community who help make possible the fine education that each boy and girl receives. They have been effective in giving every student greater opportunities for learning so that he will be better prepared to go forward into the future. Without the untiring patronage and kindness of these people, it would be impossible to have the school we have today. We sincerely wish to extend a token of appreciation to those individ- uals who have so unselfishly given of their time and efforts to the interests and advancements of Pine Grove High School. BOARI) OF EDUCATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES MR. SANFORD JONES MR. HENRY TOUCHTON MR. W. W. HITCHCOCK PINE GROVE HIGH SCHOOL VALDOSTA. GEORGIA TRUSTEES J. H. Bilks, chairman Henry touchton Sanford Joncs D. E. GERLOCK PRINCIPAL To the members of the Senior Class of 1955 I would bring one thought. The works of the mind, the beauty of art, and the peacefulness of re- ligion outlive their creators, but the deeds of Popes, Presidents, and Generals for whom periods are named, perish with or soon after the doers. None of the foreign kingdoms whose dates you have studied of the past have survived. But remember the spirit they sprang from does live. The importance of each member of this class depends solely on what he or she gives as a gift to the world and to your country. It maybe a life well lived, wisdom, honor, or the acceptance of responsibilities in a world demanding leaders and followers. You are in the hands of the world and the world is in your hands. In charting your future aim high and in so doing remember: The dust's for crawling, heaven's for flying. Wherefore, my children, whose wings are grown, Soar upward to the Sun.' It was founded to stimulate effort, reward achievement and to encourage and assist its members to continue their education after high school. The Pine Grove chapter, under the leadership of Nell Touchton, President, and Mr. Gerlock has had a most successful year and desires to do even better in future years. Joyce Fields Sheriff Futch Much appreciation is due to the students who gave of their time and effort in helping to make the school busses a safer place to ride. These students were elected to their jobs at the beginning of the school year and have been assisted by Sheriff Futch and the bus drivers. The bus drivers have given sincere cooperation and it is hoped that every year will be as successful as 1954-55. President----------------------- -Robert DeLoach Vice President-------------------------Joyce Fields Advisor----------------------------Mr. M. J. Lane This year was a banner year for the F. F. A. A few of their accomplishments included first place in the State Farm Bureau contest, first place in the Valdosta Cattle show, first in the Lowndes County Com contest, and first place in the State Pasture contest. Seven of the boys received Georgia Planter's Degree and one student received the American Farmers degree. These are the highest degrees that the State and nation can confer on F. F. A. boys. In addition to a fine chapter record there were many individual prizes as well as group prizes won. These included first place in the boar show at Moultrie, Georgia; and first place in showmanship at the Southern Legion Fair. We are proud of their achievements. Chapter Beau Advisor The Pine Grove Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America has had a very successful year under the leadership of Miss Sara James, advisor, and Sara Dasher, president. One of the main objectives of the year has been to im- prove the personal and the moral attitude of the homemakers, A few of the projects were: Keeping the girls' basement clean, improving the appearance of the front entrance and keeping the school bulletin board up to date on current events. The main project of the F. H. A. was the tiling of the floor in die Home Economics department. In November, our advisor and ten members attended the District Meeting in Albany and every year the F.H. A. sends delegates to the state convention. Helen Zeigler, an active member, won the South Georgia pie baking contest with the first prize an electric range. Six girls are working toward their Junior Homemaking Degree and one is working toward her Homemaker's Degree. The Chapter elected James Parker as their Chapter Beau and presented him with a white sweater. The officers for this year were; President, Sara Dasher; Vice President, Jo Ann Reeves; Secretary and Treasurer, Shir- ley Taylor; Historian, Nell Touchton; Parliamentarian, Rose Mulligan; Reporter, John L. Scott; and Project Chairman, Faye Tindall. Sf1 President-------------------------- Carolyn Davis Secretary-Treasurer------------------Helen Zeigler Reporter--------------------------- Shirley Zeigler To Make the Best Better For the past two years the community improvement project has been the Pine Grove 4-H Clubs primary interest. The Club purchased the Christian flag in the auditorium and other plans for such donations are in progress. A very successful money project was carried out with each member selling his respective share. In addition to the financial part the Pine Grove Chapter was highly successful in other areas. Several members attended the dedication of the 4-H club centerj Carolyn Davis was elected County Council President and was the District 4-H Com Queen. Club Advisors were Mr. and Mrs. j. H. Zeigler, Mr. and Mrs. Colebum, Mr. and Mrs. Mulligan and Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Davis. GIRL SCOUTS BROWNIES Mr . Welch Francine Jones Joyce Stanford Sue Colebum Anna Godley Carolyn Davis John L. Scott At every game our cheerleaders completed the task of igniting the spark of student spirit. Without them the enthusiasm and atmosphere created by a student body so necessary for success would have been lacking. We feel the cooperation given by the students this year was better than ever and we feel the honest and continuous efforts of our cheerleaders is most commendable. BUS DRIVERS Mr. Hunter, Mr. McKie, Mr. Exum, Mr. Hunter LUNCHROOM STAFF Mrs. Exum, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Copeland The Pine Grove Eagles re-created from the remains of a previously strong team bounced back into basketball circles with the spirit and determination that has carried them through many difficult contests. Entering the Southern Division play-offs the Eagles fought their way through to the Southern Division Championship. The entire school and community is proud of their efforts both on and off the court. We wish to share our thanks with Mr. E.B. Folsom, our Coach, and all who have helped to build our team. The Pine Grove Eaglettes, long known for their excellent basketball squads, turned in another enviable record this year under the coaching of Miss Nancy Herring. For the second time in five years the Eaglettes fought their way through to a berth in the Georgia State Championship finals. After moving off to a slow start the team slowly gathered momentum and by the end of the season swept through the Southern Division and Eighth District Championships. Entering the contest at Macon the Eaglettes won their first game but lost in the semi-final contest by eight points. We are proud that Sara Dasher and Helen Zeigler won places on the Atlanta Constitution All-State team and hope that our coming teams keep up the good fight.
