SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL Slatington High School Kutztown State Teachers College Muhlenberg College, Ph.B. University of Pennsylvania, M.S. in Ed. To the Graduates of the Class of '53: May I congratulate you, who are leaving our school to face life in what- ever task you have chosen. I know that you will do your work with the same enthusiasm that you have used in your school life. In America, we stake our faith in the democratic principles of living. This type of government can exist only if you live according to the principles that you learned in our public schools. lf we have helped you as students to appreciate this great American heritage and pass it on to those who follow, our mission as a democratic institution has been attained. The torch of free- dom must be carried by you in the future. I certainly hope you have enjoyed your short stay with us as much as we have enjoyed working with you. MARVIN O. Looking back over our years in Pine Grove High, we recall many fond memories of the events enjoyed together. In our Freshman year our group was enlarged by students from surround- ing townships. Together we formed a class of one hundred and six students. With these country students we attended dances, basketball games, and joined the activities of Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, Glee Club, and other clubs. Class organization came with our Sophomore year, as we elected advisors and class oflicers. Our Sophomore activities included our first dance, which was a hoedown, and two soup sales. Our Iunior year was exciting. In this year we picked our class rings, which we still cherish. With much anticipation, we awaited their arrival, which was to have been Christmas, but to the joy and delight of everyone, we received them on November 19th. Iunior activities included a hoedown. a Christmas dance, a card party, and our long-awaited junior Prom, which after much debating was called Hawai- ian Cruise. Room 111 served as our ship which brought us to our romantic Hawaii, an island with its many palm trees, flower-bearing vines, and beauti- ful moonlit water. The Prom was a gala affair with interest centered around the crowning of the King and Queen, Richard Longsderff' and Dolores Men- dell. During the course of the evening we chanced off a television set. In our junior year, our class and the Class of '52 purchased a new electric scoreboard for the auditorium. At last! The year of years! We were Seniors l During our Senior year we took an educational trip to Pottsville, visiting the Court House, news- paper buildings, Yuengling's ice cream plant, and the jail. On November llth, we presented our class play, Our Miss Brooks, a comedy, under the direction of Miss Garman. I'm sure, not only the audi- ence enjoyed the play, but the cast enjoyed putting it on as well. We collected over 52,000 on the sale of magazines. The girls had the highest sales score, hence the boys were obliged to throw a party, which was enjoyed by all. Other activities included a doughnut sale and a hoedown. In the month of February, we held our last important dance, a valentine dance, at which the Senior girl who collected the most money for the heart fund was crowned Queen of Hearts, and received many lovely awards. Our final trip, one which had been anticipated since we entered high school, found us enroute to Washington on june l, 2, 3. Upon our return, we took leave of our classmates and teachers. Bravely, with high hopes, we regretfully depart from Pine Grove High School, knowing that we are now on our own and that our future depends upon the course we follow. But always in our hearts will linger the many happy memories of our dear Pine Grove High. -IOAN SNYDER and CALTHANNA BEHNEY. -41.- ,...,...,......-.f,-,-f. , CLASS WILL Q? Although the play was enjoyed by all who saw it fwe hopel, the real lun took place behind the scenes during rehearsals. Q M T' The birthday of George Washington was commemorated at Pine Grove Area Ioint High School with an appropriate assembly program, reviving the memories of the historical-minded by a return to the days of Louis XIV and George and Martha Washington. The pageant, entitled A History of the Minuetf' was beautifully portrayed by groups of students wearing the costumes of the eighteenth century. The first scene portrayed a ball at the court of Louis XIV where the Minuet was danced for the first time. The second scene showed an afternoon and evening of festivities in the home of George and Martha Washington, where the Minuet was danced on all state occa- sions. A prologue, giving a brief history of the origin of the Minuet, opened the pageant. The first scene depicted courtiers and their ladies making merry and finally dancing the Minuet. The play then left the Old World and portrayed servants and master preparing for a ball at the home of George Washington. Dancing by the children was one of the features of the next scene. The climax to the activities of a busy day was a ball held in honor of the mas- ter of the house. In a beautiful setting, brilliantly lighted, members of the Senior Class joined in an excellent characterization of the Minuet. All of the participants were members of the Class of 1953 with the exception of the children taking part. The production was under the able direction of Mrs. Bruce Christ, teacher of social studies. The dances were directed by Mrs. Lee Raybuck and Mrs. Arthur Kline. Stage arrangements and decorations were under the supervision of Mr. Paul Bowen and Mr. Iohn Musselman. Rosalie Werley presided at the piano. The program was enjoyed by the assembly with a spontaneous applause expressing their approval. lt has been decided to make this an annual event. -77- MINUET First Row: Lnrramc Ncnl. As a junior he made the Associated Press All-State second team, and the United Press All-State Hrst team, This year he again is high in the run- ning for all-state honors. Locally, lack has broken all existing records, except for the indi- vidual one-game high. His 1952 total of 590 points is tops, as well as his four-year total, l,746. DONALD REINHARD Donald is the second part of the Grovers' now famous one-two scoring punch. Donnie has developed into the most outstanding pivot man ever to play for Pine Grove. He too has quite a list of honors, including two years on the All-South Schuyl- kill League Team as well as second team All-State honors in 1952. His scoring for the last four campaigns would also have broken all prior existing records as he rolled up 1,387 points with 431 in his 1952 performance. RICHARD DORAN One of the main reasons for a steady procession of field goals this past year was the fine back court work of Dick. Converted from a high-scoring forward, who in 1952 netted 211 points, to the play-maker of 1953, Dick set up many a scoring opportu- nity. While not sensational in his scoring, his steady work under the Grovers' defensive boards made him one of the outstanding players on a great team. RICHARD HEINBACH The story of a real-life hero is this one of Dick's. Forgotten by many Grover fans because of the brilliance of other members of the team, Dick came into his own in the district playoffs when he sparked the club to a resounding 68-50 victory over Nesquehoning for the championship. We wish Dick were back next year. A -82.- JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL First Row: Marlin Stump. Kenneth Zimmerman. Iocl Achenbach. Theodore Dreishach, George Ditzler.
