Ml NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The nine juniors elected to the Nation- al Honor Society in March, 1951, found themselves seniors in September, 1951, and soon showed their ability to get things clone. Their first activity was a tea given to honor faculty members and student organization leaders. Ioy Lynne Rushing served as chair- man and was ably assisted by the sponsor, Mr. C. B. Garrison, and students, Tankie May, Marian Clark, and Mary Sue Smith. Another annual project of the National Honor Society is the operation of the con- cession stand at the basketball games. This money pays for the initiation fees and pins of the new members. The Pine Bluff High School chapter is always active in the an- nual state convention which was held in Ionesboro, Arkansas, this year. Pine Bluff delegates who attended the meeting April 5 were Charles Avaritt, Mary Sue Smith, and Charles Smith. The new members, consisting of 152 of the Senior Class and 596 of the lunior Class were initiated on a student assembly March 15. A formal banquet was then held March I6 at the Parish House in honor of the new members. To be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, a student must have :xx scholarship ranking in the upper third of his class and must have spent at least one year in the local school. Membership in the society is a favorable introduction to the scholastic organizations of any college and is one of the highest honors bestowed on a high school student. LIBRARY STAFF The beginning of the school year found the library staff moving. What a Job they have had awaiting new furniture and shelves for the reference rnaterial which they had earlier packed, pushed and lugged to the new quarters. Only the repeated exclarnations of Gosh, isn't it prettyfw Corning from all who entered the new building gave staff rnenz- bers encouragement to put their house in orderw. Now, P. B. I-l. S. students can boast of having not only one of the fnost beautiful and well-equipped but also one of the rnost efficiently managed libraries in the state. Muon credit for the libraryf-its structure, Lts organization and its helpfulness to stu- dentseegoes to Mrs. Annie Bddins who never looses her patience and is always ready to give assistance. The usual point systern was used to select the winner of the pins awarded to the most valuable staff rnernbers by the Pine Bluff branfh of University Woriien. Despite a year of hard worlc there has been tinie out for fun. The annual rarty held April lil at Qakland Park was 1: most enioyable event. CAMDEN The Camden Panthers proved to be a thorn in the Zebras' mane as they held Pine Bluff to a 7 to 7 deadlock. Sporting a heavy line against an injury riddled Zebra line, Camden out charged Pine Bluff all night. Pine Bluffs touchdown came late in the first half after a fumbled punt was recovered on the 16. From there Holmes passed to Boy Hinson for the score. Beal kicked true, and it was 7 to O at the half. But a determined Panther fought back for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 7 all. FORDYCE The Fordyce Redbugs were no match for a Zebra team preparing for the Little Bock Tigers. The Zebras scored early in the game after recovering a Red Bug fumble on the 5. loe Marks plunged to paydirt. Gray- don Hardister made a 25-yard touchdown sprint in the second quarter to give Pine Bluff a 13 to U advantage at the half. In the third quarter, Marks and Hardrster both scored again. Other Zebra players are Beal and Higga on NORTH LITTLE ROCK ln one of their toughest games of the season, the Zebras took their third Big Six win over North Little Bock, l3 to 7. Pulling both touchdowns out of the blue, Bill Holmes led a gallant group of injury-hampered Zebras to a well earned victory. On the second play of the game, Holmes picked up a Wildcat fumble and galloped 35 yards for the back-breaking touchdown and a 6 to O lead. After that the game settled down with only one more threat for a touch- down by the Zebras. With 25 seconds left in the half, Holmes intercepted a pass on the Wildcat 40. He then threw a 33-yard pass to Louis Stone on the seven. Two plays later Bill found loe Marks with a perfect heave in the end zone making it 13 to O at tlie half. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats drove for their only touchdown. Nations passed to Whitten, who also kicked the extra point, making the tally 13 to 7. That was the way it ended as the Zebra line led by Beal, Steelman, and Short stopped the Wildcat threat. The victory made Pine Bluff leading contender for the Bix Six crown. LITTLE ROCK An inspired Zebra football team turned in the upset of the year with a breath-taking 21 to l9 victory over the Little Rock Tigers. With the victory, Beat Little Rock week came to a dynamic close for 9,000 screaming fans and the week-end celebration began. The Zebras clinched the Big Six Champion- ship for the first time since its organization in l947. The point kicking of Tommy Beal and outstanding line play by every lineman made the difference as the Zebras built up a 21 to 6 lead in the first three quarters. Even the Tigers' frenzied last quarter rally of three touchdowns could not overtake the Zebras then. lt all started for the Zebras early in the first period when Bill Reid picked up a fumble and carried l7 yards to the Tiger l6. Three plays later loe Marks plunged over from the one. Beal's kick was good for a 7 to 0 lead. ln the second period the Zebras went 62 yards in six plays, the last one a 28 yard pass from Holmes to Marks was good for the score and a l4 to 0 lead at the half. ln the third quarter a blocked punt by Hinson set up the score. Higgason dived over the line from two yards out a little later for the Zebras' final touchdown. Tommy Beal made his last kick good for a 2l to 0 lead. ln the last quarter Little Rock staged a last ditch rally which fell short by two points. Bill Rucker and Iohn Walsh being escorted off the field by joyous Zebra fans. MONROE, LOUISIANA The Guachita Parish Lions handed the Zebras their only defeat of the year, 33 to l3. The Zebras grabbed an early lead when Roy Edgington scord his last touchdown for the Zebras. But Monroe roared back on runs by Muckleroy, Sikes, Franklin and two by Frank Mobley. The last Zebra score came on a Holmes to Heed pass. HOT SPRINGS Trailing 14 to 0 at the half, the Zebras came from behind to top the Hot Springs Trojans, closing Pine Bluff's best season in a decade. After passes had given the Trojans a hot 14 to 0 lead, the rain cooled them off. Tommy Beal started things off for the Zebras and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. Several plays later, after runs by Walsh, Holmes, Higgason and Womble put the ball on the 10, Higgason scampered over. Beal's kick tied it up. In the last minutes, passes from Holmes to Reed put the ball on the l2. Prom there Holmes passed to Stone for the winning touchdown.
