' BASKETBALL - 1947 The l947 basketball season was a fairly good one with the Pine Bluff High School cagers winning fifteen out of twenty-six starts. This season's schedule provided fifteen confer- ence games. Of these, the Zebras won six and lost nine. The Zebra squad consisted of three teams with the brunt of the work borne by the first string. First string members were, Bill Stauffer at forward, Ernest Ryburn at forward, cap- tain lack Sparks at center, and Iim Stark, Bill Bodie, and Ioel Lucke at guards. Substitules that saw plenty of action were Iohn Turley, Wayne Divine, and Richard Bumpass. lack Sparks seemed to be the best defensive man on the team while lim Stark's set shots saved many games. ' Special credit should be given to Ernest Byburn, who was placed on the first string all-Arkansas high school conference basketball team. Byburn was the sixth high scorer in the conference with l48 points and an average of lU.5 points a game. The l947 basketball season was opened with wins by the Zebras over Watson Chapel, 39 to 16, and Malvern 34 to 27. After a two weeks holiday rest, the Zebras won their first conference game by defeats ing Fordyce 32-22. The Zebras easily chalked up another win over Warren 42 to 21. A perfect record was spoiled when the Fl Dorado Wildcats ,came to town. The Zebras jumped off to a fast start and led alllthe way, but the Wildcats, led by Ray Parks, whittled the Zebra lead down to a 30 to 30 tie as tlie games leading scorer with l6 points. r 'I'1f1'.'e111:1 lf- th' 1 '11 QQf1t11r1s:tf1:'1f1t'11ite1'tytf1v1f111tf11::1e39'f, 1f'1'y::.
