Will he ever get Their loss: to work. and girls. How trite. settled down? our gain. Pl E CONE In high school our chores of the seasons, Fall, Winter, and Spring. have been brightened by our school paper. For many of us this is the last year to read and chuckle over amusing anec- dotes in the Pine Cone: to scan the editorials, to digest the main news articles and to read the gossip columns: to see those super, snooping staff members dashing madly about the halls hot on the trail of Rumor. Since 1919, when the first Pine Cone was issued, the motto of the class in Journalism might well have been The Best and Nothing But The Best . for it has always produced a paper that has ranked high in newspaper annals. The issues of '41 and '42 have been no exception. Miss Josephine Martin. teacher of English and Journalism, has sponsored the Pine Cone for nine years. She and the staff have done a grand job, and we are proud of the paper they have edited. Editor-in-chief. ' ' THE ZEBRA We do hope you like your '42 ZEBRA 'cause the staff has really tried to give you an annual that will delight the senior's eye and grow into one of his greatest trea- sures as the years go by. The years '41 and '42 will long remain prominent on the pages of history. They have been years of uncertainty, years of sadness and years of hope. Yet for us, here at ole P. B. H. S., there has been much happiness. We have en- joyed giving you an annual which, we hope, is the best yet. We have made it as new and different as possible. We have recorded on these pages, in the order in which they occurred, the outstanding events of our school year. We hope they will be your most vivid memories. and may they challenge you to bigger and better things as the years pass. We, the staff of 1942, salute you! Editor-in-chief. In war even more than in peace, the band plays an important part in building morale and creating enthusiism. The Pine Bluff High School Band has worked at its task just as any other patriotic, democracy loving group of boys and girls should. The march- ing band offered its services at any time it might be needed for defense work, while the concert band rendered a concert every two weeks during the concert season. Then numbers used on those concerts took a decided patriotic trend. Wagner and Dvorak were not overlooked, however. nor were Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael. This yea1 s hand members unanimously voted to sacrifice their annual state contest trip in order to serve on their home field. Jimmy Mullins served the hand as president this year. while Dick Pierce was vice-presi- dent and Betty D. Miller. Secretary. Tommy Collier was the business manager. The drum major was Bill Brewer. Quartermasters in charge of eqiupment. uniforms and the band room were: Charles Suddeth, Wayne Raley, John Woodul. Donald Jenkins, James Hall, Robert Shults. Tom Hervey. Allie Bess Atkins and Dick Wharton served as librarians. The 1941-42 Band Queen was Isabell McNeill. She was awarded this honor for selling the largest number of memberships to the band. It is through the sale of these memberships that the bands are maintained. Isabell's maids were Dorothy Hestand, Billie Zack. Allie Bess Atkins. Claire Sallee. Mary Elizabeth Herrington. and Madelyn Jenkins. In short. in saying the PINE BLUFF BAND we are including three different, distinctive organizations-the concert band. the orchestra. and the marching band. The Club is divided into three sections, the Boy's Glee Club, the Girl's Glee Club. and the Mixed Chorus. This year under the direction of Mrs. Ella Mae Wright, music teacher and Glec Club Director, they have specialized in semi-classical music and featured it on various occasions. To be specially commended is the Girls' Ensemble. It is composed of nine girls who have given fine performances in numerous public appearances throughout the city. Vocalizing is not the only accomplishment of the club. This year they have been par- ticularly industrious in raising money through candy sales and magazine subscriptions, with which they bought a set of portable steps and a victrola. Due to the tire shortage and the Glee Club's desire to be patriotic and cooperative in the War effort, the Festival will not be held this year. iisis ll I ...wg Boy's Glee Club: Jiimnie Bassett, Jimmie Calaway, Malcolm Bilsky. And What' if Susie Quattlebaum and Charlotte Wood didn't talk all the time, And we didn't have all those stairs in the Senior building to climb? What if we hadn't beaten Little Rock? That certainly would have been a terrible shock. Suppiosize that instead of Mr. Grizzley, Jerry L. still taught problems and e ate, And that the Pine Cone hadn't thought this annual was supposed to be about the State? What if, on January 22, 1942, little Howard hadn't been a year old? And the weather for those two weeks or so after Christmas hadn't been so cold? Supposing Patsy and Rob got mad, And Betty Miller gave back that Lute little gold football she had. Perhaps if Casonova Collier didn't have so many girls, And if the correct jewelry to wear with sweaters were something else be- sides pearls-- ' If Frances Keith and Martha Ryland were still as quiet as they used to be. But Fanny and Wilbur have certainly changed a lot-and so has Mary Lee. It' on the football field we never had to wade through mud. And if half the girls in school didn't look like cows chewing their cud. li' Mrs. MeCaminon never called up after you were absent to find out what was wrong, tOh, happy dayl And if the desire to play hookey once in a while weren't so strong, If Mrs. Eddins never said, Quiet, please, And if Howdy weren't such an awful tease. If Jim and Bitsy were each other instead of being themselves, lt' those little things that run up and down the piano keys wut 1 1 1 instead ol' elves, Things sure would be in an awful mess. But we could put all the responsibility on that silly old war. I guess May May CALENDAR FOR MAY National Music Week assembly program. Award assembly. Congratulations. winners!
