The fall brought the be- ginning of school and a new attitude which was aoe by the Seniors. ‘The ‘T'amaroa consolidation resulted in many new class- mates and friends who were helped to be- come familiar with PCHS. rhe first items of business for the class was the election of their officers. Candi- dates chosen were: Kathy Perkins- President; David Ozburn-V.P.; and Diane Loos-Sec.-Treas. Kent Epplin, Diane Loos, lim Loos, Brooke Lueker and Steve Shaw were elected to the Student Council and from this group emerged the new officers tor the group. he new attitude showed up in many changes in the National Honor Saciety and Student Council. In control of these new aggressive formats were several ambitious seniors who helped with the many service projects, the new prom) of both organ- izations. The newly formed Show Choir flourished with many seniors involved, and many talented class members displayed im- yressive performances in the Homecoming Variets Show, the fall play, and the spring musical. The successes of the class were unsur- yassed. They began with a win in the omecanins Float Competition, the third consecutive year for claiming this honor. Seniors became the royalty for all dances — Diane Loos and Ray Keller reigned over Homecoming, followed by Kent Epplin and Lynn cies as the Christmas monarchs. Rhonda Schrader and Daron Fox then received the crown for the Sweet- heart Dance. The class selected 18 students as Senior Favorites, the highest number that many could recall. Accompanying these merits were other seniors recognized for other prestigious honors such as DAR, SAR, Stu- dents of the Month chosen by the DuQuoin Call and Elks Club, and eleven class mem- bers being named Illinois State Scholars. Most a ie members decided to further their education and made appropriate preparations throughout high school for their college future. The Class of ‘89 worked hard to achieve high goals as they adopted the new attitude “Committed to Excellence.” 33 JUNIORS Meredith Ackerman Steven Beck Chad Beltz Brenda Bender Matthew Bentrup Lisa Bigham Tibretta Bigham Lisa Biley Jayette Bolinski Angie Bradley Heather Bronke Elizabeth Brookman Brian Brooks Kelly Campbell Marcie Carter Junwors Eagerly Await Their Final Year Hh Class of ’90 shows off its second place float, ‘Give the Hornets a Horror ow,.”’ The Class of 1990 started the year by elect- ing Jon Pyatt, President; Carrie Kellerman, Vice President; and Andrea Clarke, Secre- tary-Treasurer. The class also elected the following students to the Student Council: Kelly Campbell, Heather Chapman, Mike Napier, Shelly Stanowski, and Kirsten Wolfe. After electing members to the Junior Class Congress, the class anxiously began the task of planning the 1989 Junior-Senior Prom. The class used the money they raised from their fund-raisers to pay for the Prom and color pictures for the yearbook. The class worked hard on their float entry for the Homecoming Parade. The float, entitled “Give the Hornets a Horror Show,” won them second place in the competition. The class was represented by Terri ag and Wes Sroka in the Christmas Court. Officers and members Mrs. Jessup, the new student council ad- visor, initiated a more involved and aggressive program. The year was opened with the elec- tion of officers. Kent Epplin claimed the Pres- idency while Steve Shaw was elected Vice- President, and Brooke Lueker was voted in as Secretary. One change in the program was the idea to have an overall theme for Homecoming. It was decided to be “Panthers Go Hollywood,”’ with entries in the parade pertaining to movie titles. Another activity taken on was the coun- cil’s participation in the local Optimist Club’s annual “Toys for Tots.’’ Student council do- nated funds to buy new toys for less fortunate boys and girls. A dress up day for students and teachers also highlighted the year. The changes continued when the old Stu- dent Council Constitution needed to be up- dated. A committee was nominated to take on this task. Along with these changes this group was still responsible for changing the signs in the cafeteria, raising and lowering the flag, and keeping the events sign in front of the school updated. In the spring Student Council and National Honor Society joined forces to plan the Heart Fund activities. This was the first time since the late 1970's that a fair was held for this event. The new format followed by Student Council motivated more students to partic- ipate in school events. Math Club Adds Points and Activities The Math Club is an organ- ization that meets once each month. Students who attend hear programs about math topics and earn bonus points in their math classes. The group’s activ- ities included decorating a truck for the Homecoming Parade; having review sessions for the ACT; and participating in the heart fund fair with a cookie - numbers game. With the he Ip of a faculty advisory committee and Principal Brewer, the NHS adopted a specific written constitution in- cluding the policy of admission to the group empha- sizing the areas of character, leadership, sc holarship and service. Each of those areas played a part in the screen- ing process for applicants to the organization, in the induction ceremony for the group held in March, and in the focus and direction of the society. Individual and group service projects became the primary function of the group with students choosing and participating in their own individual projects whic h included a number of clean-up and _ helpful projects around school and helping with the community-wide food pantry. Senior and _ members participated in the community blood drive i April as another group proje ct. When Christmas neared with the annual Moon- light Madness, French carols could be heard as the French club made its way along the sidewa lks. The holidays continued to be made special when the French 3 and 4 students sold roses, carnations, and balloons for Valentine’s Day. The climax of the year came when the French travel group went to Chicago. The group visited many points of interest including: The Candlelight Theatre, the Hancock Building, the Sears Tower, the Art In- stitute, and Shedd Aquarium to name a few. The group also got to meet “‘Uncle Eddy,” (Ed Rensi, the president of the McDonalds corporation), who has helped some of the clubs at PCHS. He took the group to the first McDonalds, the Ray Krocc Museum, Hamburger University, and the cor- porate office building. The group of students that went were Aaron Kellerman, David Ozburn, Stephanie Rensi, Rhonda Schrader, and Justin Wilkes. This year was ended with a picnic at the fair- grounds for all members. This year’s exhibit pre- sented 65 projects which ranged from a brain made of salt dough to elaborate scenes composed of pretzels, frosting, candies, and much more. Creativity, imagina- tion and a few tricks with food are the essential ele- ments required to produce a winning entry in the Edible Art Exhibit. The entries were judged in four catego- ries: nature, sahepli eens og scenes, and miscellaneous. Fach entry was then evalu- ated for creativity, original- ity, and use of materials. Al- though most of the projects were made entirely of edible substances, the students were allowed to use one item in their project that was not a food a i The winners in this year’s Edible Art Exhibit were: First Place Winners: Charlene Greer, Leslie Gladson, Amy Bigham, and Julie Murphy. Second place honors went to Feit Kreger, Cindy Pabst, Alison Whitson and Tami Latham. Third place winners were Tim Kel- lems, ie Bigham, Mendy McElvain and Sheryl Bruno. Honorable Men- tion winners were Angie Bigham, Da- vid Waldman, Annie Pistes and Tara Curtright. The Faculty Choice Award went to Eric Kreger and the Student's Choice Award went to Tim Kellems. Dr. Bradley’s emphasis on pride and commitment to high standards in all aspects of school life helped to inspire a new attitude among the PCHS community. Nine new faculty teachers, over ninety students from Tamaroa who now attended PCHS via consolidation, and a freshman class of 137 were also included among the new faces expressing new attitudes and starting school in a different place than last year. Band, football, vedlevball, golf and cross country were early starters in the school year’s beginning, and differ- ences were noted in some coaching assignments. Class officers and student council members were elected to or- ganizations led by new advisors and instituting new stand- ards. A Swing Choir and Show Choir emerged out of the Music Makers organization and performed in a number of community events. ““Our Miss Brooks’”’ was Black Masque’s fall play. National attention turned to the final days of the pres- idential campaign. In the race marred by old-fashioned ‘“‘mud-slinging’’ and newly accepted “‘negative campaign- ing’ by both top candidates, the Republican ticket of George Bush and Dan Quayle defeated Democrats Michael Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen. There was much enthusiasm again this year for the basketball Panthers. They emerged as co-champions of the SWEC, won the Regional title and advanced to Sectional where they were defeated by eventual state champ Carlyle. John Stevens qualified for the state wrestling champion- ship for the third consecutive year. Nationally, George Bush was inaugurated as the 4lst President of the United States, John Tower, Bush’s De- fense Secretary appointee, was rejected by the Senate, bringing up new questions on ethics which continued through the spring. Lt. Col. Oliver North was found guilty on three of twelve charges facing him for his role in the Iran-Contra scandal. Speaker of the House Jim Wright resigned under fire for alleged ethical violations as well. On a positive note, a glorious new MGM theme park was opened in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Changes were approved and made in the PCHS building as the lockers were painted and ceiling fans were installed in the auditorium. The baseball and softball teams had winning seasons, with the girls including a nineteen game win streak in their year and an undefeated conference mark. In track, Brian Keller qualified for state, as he had in cross country. Kim Gendron, competing individually throughout the season, placed fifth in the state girls’ track meet in the shot put. The Music Makers presented “Bye, Bye Birdie,’ and rumors of Elvis Presley’s being alive were fueled locally as well as na- tionwide through the tabloids. The school year began to come to a close in May. The Juniors put on “In My Dreams’ for Prom. Many organ- izations elected officers for the 1989-90 school year. Final exams rolled around which included two days for Seniors and two days for all other students. The differences in the build- ing continued with os the changing of offices and removing asbestos. Plans were finalized for these projects to go on during the summer along with painting the walls, lowering the ceilings and installing new tile in the hallways of PCHS. Baccalaureate at First Baptist Church and outdoor Commencement exercises on Quillman Field closed out the school year’s activities. Even while the school year closed, new attitudes toward democracy flared uprisings internationally. In China, large numbers of students held peaceful protests, sit-ins and hunger strikes to gain attention for their desire for a more democratic system of government. When violence erupted because of the military’s intervention, the world was stunned by the brutal slayings of thousands of unarmed students. More democratic elections were held for the first time in over forty years in Poland, and candidates backed by the Solidarity party won numerous seats in government. Soviet troops had withdrawn from Afghanistan, and when their leaders visited the United States, some new openness also seemed possible with the Russians. The Ayatollah Khomeni died in Iran, and new hope for America’s hostages being held was raised as an expected power struggle emerged after the passing of a powerful lead- er. A year of differences marked 1988-89; new attitudes, new friends, and new appearances were all a part of PCHS’ year bringing about the end of the classes of the 1980’s and an optimistic view of the 1990’s, heading toward the close of the twentieth century. 155 RRR atten ee NINETEEN HUNDRED The French Travel group received honorary degrees from Hamburger University in Chicago from “‘Uncle Ed” Rensi, President of McDonald’s USA, and everyone’s pal Ronald.
