Although the NFL suffered a long, heated strike, which ended with a victory for neither side, Panther foot- ball was not at a standstill. In fact, the team battled their way to a win- ning season. Other fall sports which proved their talents were the Volley- ball winning the Conference title and Cross Country sent runners to state. In Politics, the lran-contra hearings lasted a couple months. Oliver North was the main witness in the hearings. Also Gary Hart dropped out of the Presidential race after his relationship with Donna Rice was publicized. On October 19, Black Monday occurred with the worst market panic of modern times. The crash was similar to the crash of 1929 which brought on the Great Depression. The 19-month-old Jessica Mc- Clure captured the heart of the na- tion in October. Jessica fell into an abandoned well in Midland, Texas. It took 58 hours to rescue her. She was in the hospital for a month and the $50,000 hospital bill was paid by all the contributions received across America. . Gary W. Glenzy - Social Studies, Sci- ence, Athletic Director, Head Football Coach, Assistant Basketball Coach - 18 years at PCHS Shirley Bigham - Special Education - 18 years at PCHS Pat Sheley - Special Education years at PCHS - 9 Answer: Shirley Bigham - | never get too upset when high school students say they do not know what they want to do, When | graduated from high school (PCHS) my mother, her two sisters and my sister were school teach- ers and | wanted to do something different. | didn’t know what but at that point | was absolutely certain I did not want to be a school teach- er. How wrong | was! In Aug. 1987 | started my 28th year as a teacher. Dean Brewer - | realized that a lot of positive outcomes would be achieved through firmness and consisting. David Brunty - Why? They made me do it. Wisdom - Always know more about students than they know about you. Stephen Cannedy - I became a teacher because | enjoy working with students and helping them to become better people. Wesley R. Choate - After looking back on my high school days, | saw what a positive influence that a couple of my teacher-coaches had on my life during those years. I hope that | can be a strong moral example to my students and play- ers. David Colombo - | got into this business because adults bore me. They get old and stale and set in their ways. Kids are a renewable energy resource who act as mir- rors to our long lost selves. Linda Denton - | became a teacher to guide and shape the scientific minds that will lead our world into the twenty-first century. Greg Douglas - | enjoy working with students and especially enjoy seeing growth, development and improvement. Robert Frassato - Each student is an individual and may react differ- ently to a given situation. However, all of the students will try harder if they know that you are interested in their successes. Gary W. Glenzy - Because of my high school coach and my wife Greg Hale - “Life is a learning ex- perience.” Glen Hamilton - I have decided, even with the clouding of time, that students remain about the same in behavior and attitude as did their parents (and their grand- parents). Only the problems vary. Ramona L. Hatch - Bit of wisdom | learned from my Cooperating teacher during student teaching and have always tried to apply — Never ask students (or anyone else) to do something you won't or can’t do yourself. You must teach by example not just by words. Daniel Herbst - | loved high school myself and feel that teaching is a special blessing of sharing in young people’s lives at this impor- tant time in their life. Jeanette Hoeinghaus - Over 100 years ago my great-grandfather be- came a teacher. Since that time several family members in each generation have taught in South- ern Illinois schools. | always knew | would become part of this family tradition and have always been happy with my career choice. Jean Horn - Each student is an in- dividual completely different from another. The students are once again beginning to improve in their behavior and we have some very nice young ladies and gentlemen in this school — and very, very few “bad apples.” Carolyn Kay Longshore R. N.- Asa child | lived across the street from a doctor and as long as | can re- member said | wanted to be a nurse, I’m sure he was one of the influencing forces. One little 1st grader taught me to be specific and not assume when asking questions. His skin and hands were rough and thickened like leather - (meaning what soap solu- tion have you been bathing in) | asked ‘What have you been taking a bath in?’’ He looked up and said, “the bath tub.” Karen Mathews - I have learned al- ways to check my pulldown maps before attempting to show my RESPONSES CONTINUED class where Veracruz, Mexico is and showing them Miss April in- stead. George McPheeters - | have always been interested in “talking Sci- ence” with others. Not all people are interested in Science, but per- haps I can make it somewhat more interesting to some of my stu- dents. Emest C. Queen - To live in this world, our youth need education not only in science and technol- ogy, but perhaps most of all in character. | have tried to go be- yond the textbooks into the char- acter - stressing honesty, good- ness, and making each life count for something. Someone once stated, “Modern youth is a river of clear shining water that is flowing endlessly out into a vast new world. Some impure drops are bound to get into this river, but in its constant flow and surge, these impure drops will be purified in the crystal immensity of the whole.” Sam Robb - I knew long ago that | enjoyed working with young peo- ple as well as a love of agriculture. While in my junior year at S. I. U. I discovered that becoming a Voca- tional Agriculture teacher would allow me to do both. It has been very satisfying and rewarding. Linda Rudolph - No matter how hard you try, you are not going to be liked by everyone. Something must end before memory can be- gin. Pat Sheley - | have leamed that a 30% chance of snow won't be enough to cover the ground. Davida Stivers - My art teacher in third grade made a tremendous impression on me when she told me | should become a teacher. It is because of her influence and constant guidance from that time on, that | am teaching art. Lularose Wilson - Having a 4-year scholarship for a degree in Teach- er Education was a deciding factor. Also, a 1-year subscription to the Readers’ Digest was a bonus. We must say good-bye to teachers and friends and make a new Start on a career road that never ends. But we will always remember the good times we Saw, and always remember to stand tall no matter what the future brings. We know that there are things to keep us in touch with the classmates that mean so much. Beginning the season by winning several meets, including the DuQuoin In- vitational Class A race, the Panthers gained needed experience and confidence for the more important meets at the end of the season. Behind the leadership of Coach Dick Com, the Pan- thers edged out Sparta to become the Southwesterm Egyptian C onference Champions for the second straight year. Jason Woodside, the team’s number one runner, pulled away from the field to take the individual title as well. The Panthers then ran away with the Regional title in the race held at DuQuoin, finishing all seven runners in the top fifteen places. The boys then ran at Trenton in the Sectional. Need- ing to finish in the top five teams to advance to state, the P’ville runners placed second, to make the first Panther Cross country team to advance to that level of competition. The State meet was held in Peoria’s Detweiler Park, and the Panthers finished 13th over- all among 21 teams in the meet. The top seven runners who ran at state were: Blake Lindner, Barry Graskewicz, Jason Woodside, Jimmy Bauersachs, Kevin Bird, Jeremy Myers, and Bobby Wildermuth, with Aaron Epplin as the alternate. Second Annual Nutrition Fair Nutra-Bird, the California Raisins, and the Junk Food Monster were the hit of the Nutrition Fair. Wayne Tedder and Jeff Lee explained the good and bad facts about dietary fats. Brian Sronce demonstrates the importance of good dental health as he breaks the “chain of tooth decay.” Doug Bruns, Karla Brueggemann, and Pam Hurley extolled the virtues of calcium at their Nutrition Fair booth. All of the fun (and learning) of the second annual PCHS Nutrition Fair took place in the Girls’ Gymnasium. The fair was conducted by the Ad- vanced Food Service and the Advanced Child Care classes. Students from kin- dergarten through the fourth grade at- tended, and were greeted by Nutra-Bird upon their arrival. The schools partici- pating were the District 50 grade school, St. Brunos, and 204. The chil- dren were escorted through the fair by the students from the Child Care class, while the students from the Food Ser- vice and the Child Care classes operat- ed the eleven booths making up the fair. All of the booths introduced a con- cept related to good nutrition. The campaign for president going on be- tween Nutra-Bird and the Junk Food Monster let the children vote for their choice. During the fair the basketball players came down to sign autographs for the kids. This earned some of the players a few votes for president. By the end of the day, Nutra-Bird had attained the presidency. Child Care and Food Service class participants. Mr. Magix’ Emporial group in My One and Only. In the late fall the Basketball Panthers had a 15-0 start ranking them first in the state polls. The winter season proved very fruitful in that the wrestling team had one state qualifier. The girls team also did well win- ning the consolation championship, and gaining one victory in the Regional. The boys also lived up to their expectations after winning the Carbondale Holiday Tourna- ment, tying for Benton Tournament Cham- pionship, winning Regionals and Sectionals, and taking second at State. The fans were strongly rallied behind them all of the way. In politics the Presidential candidates raced through the primary season. Illinois’ favorite Sen. Paul Simon dropped out of the Democratic race while Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis arose as Democratic leader after the two men had a long, hard struggle with Jesse Jackson. The Democrats’ fight for a candidate contrasted with the Republi- cans’ early decision favoring Vice-president George Bush over Robert Dole and Pat Rob- ertson. Spring opened with the approval of the Tamaroa Consolidation. Students from the facility came to visit our school to prepare for next fall. The baseball team had an up and down year. Four players made the first All-Conference team, and three players made the second. An individual and a relay team went to State for track. The softball team had yet another productive year bring- ing in the Regional and Sectional champion- ships. They also made their second con- secutive trip to State. President Reagan and Mikhal Gorbachev held their fourth summit in Moscow. They signed a treaty to ban all medium and intermediate range missiles. The school year closed with the usual cleaning out of lockers and final exams. The Pink Flamingo Prom was enjoyed by all, and the Seniors had an outdoor graduation cere- mony held on Quillman field. Superinten- dent Walter Grady resigned, as did Mr. Choate and Mrs. Denton. Mr. Choate was offered a job of math teacher and head coach at Christopher, and Mrs. Denton a teaching position at Rend Lake College. Along with these some of the coaches relin- quished their positions. This past year held experiences that many will treasure throughout their lives. Stu- dents dream of their future with the begin- ning of summer, and yet another step to- ward their years of independence. The memories from this year will linger leaving students looking forward to looking back.
