Mr. Hamilton decided to semi- retire, teaching only the photography classes and remaining as yearbook spon- sor. Mrs. Denton was hired for science classes. The volleyball team made area sports news with their conference title. For the first time in many years Pinckneyville sent a cross country runner, Jason Woodside, to state. October was filled with the Homecom- ing activities. Mardi Gras weekend was a success although dizzling rain fell most of the time. Betsy Mucha handed over her crown to Bianca Mohr as Mardi Gras Queen. In November, football changed to a round ball as the community fired up for another basketball season. A new Perry County jail began to be constructed. This was going up but an- other building was going down as the gar- ment factory burned. For those with food on their minds a new Hardee’s Express went up and opened on Main Street. One semester was completed and sneak previews of what the second semester had to offer provided the incentive needed for “tuning in” to the last half of this moving drama. 1. Pom-Pons show the “ups and downs” of marching. 2. The Marching Panthers perform in the DuQuoin parade. 3. The girls’ volleyball team show their enthusiasm after winning the conference title. 4. Class Of 1987 Goes Out In Style In the fall the seniors elected John Marler as President, Lynne Murphy as Vice-President, and Tracy Keene as Secretary-Trea- surer, (pictured at left). Chosen to represent the senior class in the student council were: Genea Glenzy, Melinda Hagene, Katie Kellerman, John Marler, and Lynne Murphy. The groundwork is laid; the curtain has closed. The Class of ’87 has taken its final bow at P.C.H.S. They have changed the memories they made into dreams of tomorrow, as most have decided to further their education. Due to the elimination of the senior class trip, they particiapted in no fund-raisers. They saved enough money last year to once again highlight the yearbook with colored pictures. The seniors, who will graduate as one of the largest classes in recent years, scheduled an outdoor graduation ceremony. They started off in July marching in the V.P. Fair in St. Louis. Among the many performances throughout the year, the Marching Panthers competed in the Apple Festival in Murphysboro (fourth place), and the West Frankfort Parade (first place in parade and third in field). They also performed in the Duquoin State Fair Parade, the Special Olympics, and the O’Fallon Mayfest Parade. Highlighting the season for Concert Band was the State Contest at Sesser, where they received all Division 1 ratings with 39 out of 40 points for sight reading. The Spanish Club had a busy year as they participated in many of their annual events and more. Although they did not have a stand at Mardi Gras, Spanish Club again built the only organizational float. to be entered in the Homecoming Parade. Fund raising was one of the more time-consuming events of the year. By selling Christmas ornaments dur- ing the holiday season and carnations for Valentine’s Day, many members of the advanced classes in Spanish and French raised money toward their trip to Chicago. The trip proved to be an educational and pleasurable one for the students and the sponsors as well. The travel group saw a musical, ““My One and Only”, at the Candle Light Dinner Theater, and other attractions including: The Sears Tower, The Museum of Science and Industry, and The Chicago Art Institute. The group also took a bus tour, went shopping on State Street, and enjoyed the sights on an evening carriage ride. Spanish Club also hosted an exchange student, Enri- que Expésito, from Madrid, Spain, who attended classes throughout the year and assisted Mrs. Dailey in teaching the students new aspects of the language and culture of Spain. This was the last year for our sponsor, Mrs. Elaine Dailey, to be teaching at P.C.H.S. At the end of the year, she planned to move to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She received many gifts and flowers from students wishing Spanish Club Officers: front row (L to R): Alison Whitson-Treasurer, Kirk her luck. “It’s sad to see her go;” said one student, Surry-Vice-President, Tami Whitson-President, back row: Sarah Dickey-His- “We're going to miss her a lot.” — Leslie Voorhees-Student Council Representative, Phyllis Kellerman- ecretary. 1. This made them one of the top eight teams in the state of Illinois in Class A. Seniors Darla Gill, Janelle Kellerman, Missy Loos and Tammy Patterson topped off their final campaign with consistent play throughout the season. Sophomore Jennifer Thompson was a leading hitter who delivered many clutch hits in game-deciding situations. The power pitching of sophomore Kimbra Woodside was a decisive factor in the Lady Panthers’ success as she held opponents in check throughout the regular season and through tournament play. Junior Jeannette Kellerman held down the first base position with seady play and was capably replaced by freshman Heather Opp when injured. The sta- bilizing influence of freshman catcher Nicole Rule, the consistent hitting of designated hit- ter Lori Griffen, the mound support of fresh- man hurler Andrea Clark, and the sound play of second baseman Susan Bigham combined for further aid to the Lady Panther cause. The first annual PCHS Nutrition Fair was held on March 12, 1987. Designed to teach basic concepts about good nutrition, the Fair was a project of the Advanced Food Service classes. The event was coordinated by Home Economics instructor, Ramona Hatch. The Nutrition Fair consisted of ten booths, each of which explained a different aspect of healthful eating. The booths were conceived and operated by the 36 mem- bers of the Advanced Food Service classes. The K-4 students who attended the Nutrition Fair enjoyed par- ticipating in the learning games and interacting with PCHS students. Members of the Advanced Child Care class acted as escorts for the groups of children as they visited the various booths at the Nutrition Fair. Favorable comments could be heard throughout the large crowd since the outdoor ceremony provided much more comfort, a closer view of the action, and an overall more relaxed feeling. Also qualifying as a first was the playing of the processional and recessional, “Pomp and Circumstance”, by the concert band. The cere- mony in general was changed in that the valedic- torian and salutatorian were allowed to give speeches along with the senior class president and student council president. The invocation and benediction were given by Reverend Jimmy Duncan of Nine Mile Baptist Church. After the student addresses, Principal Dean Brewer announced the class honors. § . perintendent Walter P. Grady then presented the class before they received their diplomas from Board Members James Stern and Danny Wildermuth. Mr. Grady recognized the gradu- ates receiving special awards and scholarships to end the actual ceremony. Graduation was final- ized by the changing of the tassels and the throwing of the caps. The Year Ends The second set of this year’s drama provided much excitement for many of the PCHS players. The basketball teams fared well; the girls were Consolation Champs at the tough Woodlawn tour- nament for the second straight year, and they won a first round game in the Regional. The boys won Conference and Regional Championships and fi- nally out of play at the hands of state runner-up Okawville in the finals at Sectional. In wrestling, sophomore John Stevens made a state trip, finish- ing among the top eight. Away from sports, the musical, dancing, and acting talents of many students combined for “Oklahoma!”, which returned to the PCHS stage over a 17 year hiatus in musical productions. The annual Heart Fund Vareity Show also showcased much talent and allowed for a $1500 contribution to the worthy cause. The beginning of May brought Prom with The Ritz Brothers in charge of music, the first live band in many years for the spring gala event. Students closed out the year with hot weather throughout the month leading up to their final exams taken over four days in May’s last week. In sports, tracksters Dale Thompson and Lance Jones qualified for state, and the baseball team had a winning season under head coach Wes Choate. The big news, though, was the softball team which extended the school year into June with a trip to the state tournament and an excellent third place showing in Class A, led by sophomore hurler Kim- bra Woodside and leading hitter Jennifer Thomp- son. Around town, finishing touches were added to the new Perry County Jail which was scheduled to be opened by summer’s end. In national news, two much-publicized scandals dominated the news as Democrat Presidential candidate Gary Hart and PTL leaders Jim and Tammy Bakker met their downfall. The American U.S.S. Stark was bombed and thirty-seven crewmen killed in the Persian Gulf as the war between Iran and Iraq continued, and we were allegedly mistaken for an enemy fight- er vessel. Democrat Senator from Illinois, Paul Simon from nearby Makanda announced his candi- dacy for the 1988 Presidential race, and the speed limit was increased from 55 to 65 on “rural” sec- tions of the interstate highway system. Bringing to a close the high school experience of the Class of 1987 was the first outside graduation in PCHS’ history. Commencement in the evening of May 29 for the group of 134 seniors marked an end and a beginning in the students’ lives. Senior girls enjoy some final moments together.
