Lance Jones is “‘caught in the act”’ of being himself. The 1985-86 school year was char- acterized by change. The school staff changed as Mrs. Jean Chester was ad- ded to teach three Art classes. Much heat in year’s beginning brought the shortening of the daily schedule with class periods varying from day to day for much of Septem- ber. Announcements informed the school of the “‘ultimate catering class- Catering Unlimited’’, and the forma- tion of Math Club meant two new or- ganizations. A new set of School Dance Guide- lines was adopted, especially affecting students planning to bring non-PCHS students to dances. Homecoming brought about many changes, one of them being a Blue and White Spirit Day on Friday to replace a week’s worth of dress-up days. The Variety Show and bonfire were held on Friday night, and Saturday was filled with the parade in the morning, the game in the afternoon, and the dance at night. The homecoming court changed to include only seniors; an alumnus, Marion Rushing, was chosen as the first pa- rade marshall, and an alumni band was added for the game’s half-time show. Into November, an assembly spon- sored by SADD brought national speaker and former Olympic athlete Davis Johnson to talk about the dan- gers of driving after drinking alcohol. Also, an all-school Career Day brought over 50 guests from our area to relate experiences in various professions to interested students. Fall sports and activities gave way to winter sports and activities; 1985 passed on to 1986, and the first se- mester ended. This page: 1. It seemed that more changes occurred this year than their other three years com- bined. First the school year began a week earlier than usual. Second senior officers were elected Fred Holland, President; Kathy McKown, Secretary-Treasurer; and Staci Starkweather, Vice-President (pictured at the left) Then came many changes that were very different. The Homecoming Queen candidates were required to all be seniors and homecoming week dress-up days were pro- hibited. Next senior trip was changed from the usual trip to Nashville, Tenn. to Senior Night at Six Flags. The seniors had only a couple of fund-raisers since they did not need such a large amount of money for senior trip. They did decide on senior pictures in color, which took a small amount of money. The seniors graduated as one of the smallest classes in the past years with 104 members, and their class has become smaller every year since their freshman year. Phillip O. Baker John A. The fundraising pro- cess was hard and slow for the Juniors this year, but they raised enough money by selling magazines and records, Christmas ornaments and gifts, and Panthers “Dream Team’”’ T-shirts. At the beginning of the year, they elect- ed Genea Glenzy, Lynne Murphy, Clinton Bigham, Tra- cy Keene, Anne Williams, and Tami Whitson to repre- sent them in the student council. Class officers were also chosen: Clinton Bigham, President; Jaci Scholebo, Vice- President; and Tracy Keene, Secretary-Treasurer. The Juniors also elected 12 members to the Junior Class Congress. For the second year in a row, the Junior class has won the float competition in the Homecoming pa- rades; they told Sparta to ‘Bury Your Bones, Bulldogs.” At the Christmas dance, Kristin Dolling and Mike Strick- land represented the Junior Class as first maid and escort. SOPHOMORES The Sophomore class of 1988 began their second year of high school by changing into such classes as English, French, and Spanish 2 and also worked into semester classes such as Health, Consumer Education, and perennial favorite Driver’s Education Early in the year, the sophs elected David Roe, Presi- dent; Jamie Grafton, Vice-President; and Elizabeth Eddy, Secretary-Treasurer. Also, Trisha Caupert, Aaron Epplin, Karen Fulk, Barry Graskewicz, and Shay Hagel were elected to represent the class on the student coun- cil. Class representatives for the Christmas Dance were Erin Smith and Chad Walton. Jeannette Kellerman, as a leader in FHA-HERO points, was a member of the court for the Sweetheart Dance. The class sold jewelry around Christmas time to boost their class treasury. They also built a float for the Home- coming Parade, and a number of class members were “Duck Dancers” in the Variety Show for Homecoming. Not a change for the Sophomores was their active participation in all organizations, activities, and sports and their anticipation of buying class rings and students moving up to the status of upperclassmen. Diane Loos and Steve Shaw represented the class at the Christmas Dance, and Melissa Greer was the freshman princess of the Sweetheart Dance. The Class of ’89 later began thinking about designing a successful prom their junior year and set about the task of fund-raising. Their first project was selling the annual calendars and later in the year sold candy. The Pyramid Staff began the year knowing they would be working with a different company, Jostens, to produce the 1986 yearbook. That change was the first of many encoun- tered during the year, so the staff agreed on ‘“Changes”’ to be the theme for the ’86 edition. Other significant changes at school were the addition of an Art teacher to the faculty and an expanded art program, and changes in leadership of the cheerleaders and girls’ basketball team to people who were not full-time teachers. Two new clubs changed the slate of organizations, and a number of new policies were added to regulate school dances. Many changes in the look of Homecoming also occurred, and November brought changes in the school board, including three new members and newly-elected officers, Mary Roe-President and Jim Bauersachs-Secretary. Color pictures for the senior class would return to the yearbook, as in 1984, and a change in the senior trip would mean that class members would attend Senior Night at Six Flags Over Mid-America rather than going to Nashville, Ten- nessee as classes had for many years. By year’s end, two changes in the faculty would be noted, the resignation of 8 ‘2 year science teacher Mr. Ed Birkner, and the retirement from full-time teaching duties of Mr. Glen Hamilton, 37 year teach- er, coach and long-time yearbook sponsor who would continue on a part-time basis for photography classes and yearbook next year. Noteworthy among many students was a change of attitude, led by the class of ’86. Responsibility, scholarship and disci- pline marked many students as indicated by the number of students, well over half of the graduates, planning to pursue further education beyond high school. The Pyramid Staff end- ed the year with changes in staff to continue to mark PCHS Changes. Major Changes Accompany Homecoming The Student Council elected its five representa- tives from each class and added the club and organization reps to make up the group. At an early meeting, seniors Eric Thomas, Matt Mason, and Ralph Loos were elected officers of the group. The primary responsibility of the group, spon- sored by Mr. Grady, was Homecoming, which meant many decisions to bring about changes in the fall tradition. An emphasis on bringing back alumni and making the weekend a community af- fair led to the idea of making a distinguished alum- nus the grand marshall of the parade. The person to fill this role was Marion Rushing who starred in his Panther playing days and moved all the way up to play professional football. Other important changes moved the Variety Show, queen announcement and bonfire to Friday night. Beautiful weather for the Saturday morning parade, the afternoon football game, a Panther victory over Sparta, and an enthusiastic dance crowd all added to a different sort of Student Council-sponsored Homecoming. Radio an- nouncements were also made during the holidays as reminders. SADD is in the process of making a video of different aspects of drinking. The tapes would possibly be on the following topics: Learning About Alco- hol, Alcohol’s Physical Nature, and Assisting with Alcohol Related Prob- lems. They would be used in class- rooms, church organizatins, 4-H Clubs, Youth Organizations, etc. They hope to be using the tapes by the fall of 1986. —_— a = Wy, aa at f a7 ae ¥5 2 s xa) Oe eggs ‘81 vew. b a “ ' FHA-HERO Officers: Front (L to R) Janelle Kellerman — Director, Katie Kellerman — Section Contest Winners: Front (L to R) Lauri Rediger, Rhonda Director, Anne Williams — President, Ginger Porter — Director, Jeannette Kellerman Moore, Jeannette Kellerman. Marching Panthers .. . The Marching Panthers started off their year in July with the V.P. Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. There were 440,000 spectators along the parade route, and four St. Louis TV stations covered the parade. In place of the Mt. Vernon Parade, the Band participated in the Chester Parade. The temperature was extremely warm, and the Band had to make a trip to the hospital to pick up those who had suffered from heat stroke during the parade. Fourth place was earned at the Murphysboro Apple Festival Parade, and second place at West Frankfort Parade. The Panthers re- ceived a third place for the West Frankfort field show. The highlight of the marching season occurred at Shelbyville, IL., where a first place was earned in field show competi- tion. The Band also performed at home football games, in the Homecoming Parade, and in the annual Mardi Gras Parade. This year’s Christmas Concert was given on a weekday afternoon at the Jr. High, and the Winter Concert, shared with the Jr. High, was also held there. In December, the Pep Band performed at the Tip-Off Classic in Carbondale. A majority of the Band members participated in Solo and Ensemble Contest at Sesser. There were 13 firsts and 7 seconds. Pinckneyville hosted the Tri-City Festival on March 18. The three cities involved were Chester, Pinck- neyville, and Sparta. Concert Band members prepared the songs to be taken to Organizational Contest in April. The Marching Panthers earned money all year to make the trip to Florida in June. The trip will consist of a parade at Disneyworld, a concert at a high school in Orlando, an evening at Wet-N-Wild, and a day at Epcot Center. The Band had to send in a tape and several references in order to be selected to play at Disneyworld. - 7 a x Band Officers (L to R)- Kathy McKown, Secretary; Rich Williams, President, Shari DeFord, Treasurer; Amy Williams, Vice President. ; Mr. Cannedy’s got the ‘Lunch A Blues.” Anxiously Await .. . Offering a “‘smorgasbord”’ of items from brownies, cookies, cakes and candies through various sandwiches, meat, cheese and relish trays to multi-course meals, Catering Unlimited lived up to its name for a variety of school and community clubs and functions, filing individual, small and large group orders. Holidays and celebrations brought out the best and most creative aspects of the group with such items as ghost cakes for Halloween, chocolate roses for Valen- tine’s Day, shamrock treats for Saint Patrick’s Day, personalized chocolate eggs and bunny rabbits for Easter, Mardi Gras’ longest sandwich of various meats and cheeses, and cookbooks containing many of the group’s favorite dishes at Christmastime. Packing the early season with home matches and enjoying a vocal following of fans, Coach Linda Rudolph’s Lady Panthers did well, particularly against conference foes, in amass- ing their 9-3 second place record, their only losses coming to undefeated conference champ Nashville twice and to Anna-Jonesboro late in the season. Many non-conference matches played on the road in the late season turned the year around, bringing the Varsity’s final record down to 11 wins and 13 losses. The Junior Varsity, under first year coach Dan Herbst, finished 13 and 4. Highlights of the successful season included victories in hard- fought, three-game matches against Nashville and against Steeleville in the season finale, both victories avenging losses from earlier in the season. Following the season, the coaches hosted a pizza party at which award winners were an- nounced. The varsity team had a slow start winning only two of their first eight games. They did, however, fire up in time for the Woodlawn Tournament. The Panthers beat Salem to win the consolation championship. Their sea- son’s comeback was strong as they were victorious over two teams that had beaten them earlier in the year. After winning their last two regular season games, the Panthers were ready to play in the Regional, only to have the Tamaroa Indians beat them by six points in double overtime. They fin- ished the year with a 8-13 record. The J.V. team, composed of nine freshmen and three sophomores worked together to win their first three games. Despite their lack of high school basketball experience, the team did quite well. They ended their season with 8 wins and 9 losses. Lady Panthers Consolation Champs At Woodlawn . Nine Seniors Lead 25-5 Squad The Varsity Panthers, led by nine seniors, enjoyed a successful season with many highlights, including a final record of 25-5. The Panthers’ season opener saw: them victorious over Eldorado. Of note was the fact that it was Coach Dick Corn’s 200th career victory as Panther head coach. Many more victories would be added before season’s end. Three conference foes and perennial state “‘toughies”’ Madison, Benton, and Cairo all fell in the early season before the first loss to non-conference Carlyle. The holi- day tourney at Carbondale was next, where the Pan- thers rolled into the Class A final before being defeated in triple overtime by DuQuoin. January saw the Panthers add four more wins in conference play and one non-conference loss to Herrin, then repeating that 4-1 record in the Benton tournament for a second place finish. February brought the final five victories in the Southwestern Egyptian Conference and the completion of an undefeated conference record at 12-0. The Panthers were winners of the Sparta Regional in post-season play, the tenth such championship for Coach Corn in his eleven years as head coach. The next stop was the Nashville Sectional where the Panthers avenged the early loss to Carlyle with a semi-final victory before closing out the season, losing to DuQuoin in the finals of the Sectional Tournament. In one outstanding performance a junior, Na- than Homan, broke the 1947 high jump record of 6’3” held by Panther Hall of Famer, Jim McCurdy, with a leap of 64” at the Murphysboro Invitational Meet. Another junior, Lance Jones, displayed his expertise in the discus and shot put and was the only member of the team to qualify for the State Track Meet held in Charleston. The team picked Eric Dunn, a senior, as the MVP for his great efforts in the 800M, 1600M relay and 3200M relay runs. Dunn finished second at conference in the 800M and was on the second place 1600M relay team, consisting of Dale Thompson, Chad Rushing, Ross Guthrie and Dunn. In fact, another highlight of this year’s team was the 1600M relay quartet which pulled off a come from behind win at the Murphys- boro Invitational and just missed qualifying for the ‘‘Meet of Champions’”’ in Carbondale. Second In Conference For Softball Team The Lady Panthers finished second in the SWEC and were also the runners-up in the Woodlawn Class A Regional Tournament, losing in the finals to the host school which went on to state. The final record of 13-9 was the best one anyone could remember for a softball team, though it was also a bit disappointing in that the Lady Panthers had won nine of their first ten games. Pitcher Kimbra Woodside, only a fresh- man, was voted MVP by her teammates and was chosen first team all-conference. Senior shortsthop Staci Starkweather received the Desire Award and was listed on the second team all-conference squad along with junior left fielder Darla Gill who also led the team with a .469 batting average. The varsity, under head coach Gary Glenzy, had its best start in many years, rolling to a 15-1 record and recognition as one of the top five class A teams in Southern southern Illinois. But the hits stopped falling and the breaks didn’t go the Panthers’ way in the late season, and the team wound up a respectable 16-9. Coach Wes Choate’s JV’s also sported their best record in years as they started off with four wins, ended the year with seven straight and wound up 12-2 overall. Included in their slate of victories were three shut-outs and three other wins in which the JV Panthers allowed only one run per game. 1. Homecoming Undergoes Changes Spanish Club ‘“‘Muzzles the Bulldogs’ with a giant burrito. Homecoming proved to be quite dif- ferent from past years. Unfortunately the majority of the student body react- ed in a negative way. All of the activi- ties were limited to Friday and Satur- day; the first being the traditional Blue and White Day. The Variety Show was changed into a Talent Show. Many gifted students and a couple of teachers participated. Mr. Hamilton’s piano playing act and the French Club’s Duck Dancers were recognized as being the ‘‘crowd pleas- ers.” Amy Williams, representing FHA, sang her way to first place. Hei- di Rackley’s piano recital earned her second place. David Ozburn and Brooke Lueker sang a duet to give the Spanish Club third place. The festivities were fired up early on Saturday morning as the finishing touches were placed on the floats. The parade was a success as many people lined the streets to watch. First place was awarded to the Junior Class. The Spanish Club’s float won first place in the organization category. Unlike before, the football game was played on Saturday afternoon. Our team was ready for action as they burst onto the field never giving the Sparta Bulldogs an opportunity for victory. The theme ‘‘Muzzle The Bull- dogs”’ proved true as the Panther’s did just that to win by a comfortable mar- gin. The half-time entertainment was provided by the band along with the Marching Panther alumni. Despite the first response to the an- nouncement of the changes, Home- coming went smoothly. In 1952, a concerned group of PCHS students, headed by the Stu- dent Council, established the Mary Kuykendall Carpenter Heart Fund Me- morial in memory of former student Mary Kuykendall. While she was very young, Mary was stricken with rheu- matic fever which left her with a da- maged heart. When she was twenty-six years old, she died as a result of the heart disease. The students of PCHS established this fund as a memorial to Mary and to all other persons who may be stricken with heart disease. The memorial pro- vided that each year a time would be provided for activities to raise money for this fund. For a number of years, the entire month of February was spent in such activities. On March 13, 1952, Mary’s moth- er, Mrs. Helen Kuykendall, accepted the charter for activities and for the contribution in behalf of the student body. Mrs. Kuykendall at that time was PCHS’ Librarian and senior hon- ors English teacher. In the early years of the Heart Fund, donations were presented to the National Heart Association. In the 1960’s it was decided to present the donations to our local hospital to pur- chase necessary coronary equipment. Each year since its beginning, the PCHS student body has donated at least $1,000 to the Heart Fund or to the Pinckneyville Community Hospi- tal. Today at PCHS, only a few person- nel were acquainted with Mary and Helen Kuykendall. They and other members of the community will re- member early Heart Fund activities of community variety shows, cake walks, and homemade parking meters set around the public courthouse square. Nevertheless, the tradition continues, and PCHS students, personnel, and their Heart Fund Memorial remain an unchanged part of each year. This year was little different as many of our most talented students put much effort into making the Vari- ety Show and the dance successful, netting the profits necessary to make another significant contribution to the hospital. Senior Athletes Honored In Ceremony A change in honoring senior athletes added to the year’s many changes. Since many indi- vidual sports held their own awards banquets, the All-Sports Banquet of the past gave way to the Senior Athletes’ Awards Ceremony held in the audito- rium on May 27. All seniors who participated in athletics during their four years of high school eligibility received individual plaques which listed the sports and the years in which they took part. The sixteen sen- iors in the group picture plus many of their parents and a number of the coaching staff and interested students were present for the awards. Highlighting the event were the presentations of the overall awards for seniors. The honored recipients, pictured left, were Matt Mason, Democrat Boys De- sire Award; Staci Starkweather, Democrat Girls Desire Award and Outstanding Girl Athlete: and Steve Thomas, Outstanding Boy Athlete. : 139 | 104 Graduate In Senior Class Of 1986 PROGRAM Processional’... ee penne ee. . 8 Weide gees ee Amy Williams Invocation Reverend Charles Proudfoot First Presbyterian Church Address Eric Thomas President, Student Council Address Freddie Holland President, Senior Class Amanda Modlin Cory MeClurken M. The Marching Panthers kept in good shape all year in anticipation of their trip to Disney World in June. ees ie ¥% i, = The second semester began, and further “Changes” were evident. A change in the slate of federal holidays meant another day off from school as Martin Luther King’s birthday was noted in January. Also on the national scene, a tragic change in the heretofore successful Space Shuttle missions was the January 28th explosion of Challenger and the deaths of the seven astro- nauts aboard, including ‘‘Schoolteacher in Space’’ Christa McAu- liffe. “School reform” was the general term given to many changes in education across the state of Illinois. Much talk about consoli- dation of small school districts resulted in many meetings and much uproar among people in small communities like ours, and the negative feeling was expressed and felt so strongly that state legislators soon dropped the political “hot potato” and relaxed early, tough restrictions, at least for this election year. At school, ‘Dream Team’’ and ‘“‘March Madness” T-shirts changed the attire of many students. Seniors turned in color pictures for the yearbook, a change from last year, as the class’ fund-raising efforts paid off. Winter passed without the use of a single snow day, so a week off at Easter was enjoyed by students and faculty alike. April brought hot, dry weather usually reserved for May; “Sams’’ made the fashion scene, and when the rains came in May, it seemed that two months had been reversed. May brought Prom and a change in the Senior Trip as class members journeyed to Six Flags for Senior Night. Another change occurred as Senior Athletic Awards were given out in an auditorium ceremony rather than an All-Sports Banquet as in years past. The usual collection of May activities-picnics, final meetings and recognition presentations-all passed by as seniors noted the change in events as the last time they would participate in them as high school students. A locker clean-up afternoon was held on the Friday before the last week of school. Baccalaureate was held at First Baptist Church as in past years, despite some discussion of changing it, and final exams were given on Tuesday and on shortened days Wednesday and Thursday in a week already abbreviated by the Monday Memorial Day holiday. Friday brought a graduation practice in the morning, then Commencement that evening for the smallest class in many years at PCHS, and all of the changes of the year and through the high school years gave way to the many changes in life yet to be experienced by the members of the class of 1986. Our four years at PCHS have quickly passed and our senior year seems to have passed the quickest. We have seen many CHANGES take place during the past four years, As the senior editors we hope this yearbook is as great as we hoped it would be! We would like to thank our Co-Advisors-Mr. Daniel Herbst and Mr. Glen Hamilton-and the yearbook photographers who helped us to make this yearbook as special as the memories it holds: Senior Editors: Charla Boling Fred..Holland Paula Kellerman Amy Mathenia Eric Thomas ae Seni F ; N =. ‘egg ; ee | | , .s r 4 , Rela
