However, three new cooks, Laura Epplin, Barbara Brand, and Eunice Schrader, were added to the P.C.HSS. staff. Carol Camp, who took a year’s leave of absense for the 1983-84 school year, resigned her position at P.C.H.S. She had taught Math classes, P.E. classes, and coached various sports during her eight years here. She continued working as a Misson Service Corps Volunteer in Rutland, Vermont. Bob Frassato con- tinued to work in the math department. This year, the faculty was evaluated by an Accrediting Association known as the North Central Association of Col- leges and Secondary Schools. This evaluation occurs every seven years. A self-evaluation is the first part of the North Central Evaluation. Faculty members rate themselves in 18 various categories, such as; School and Com- munity, Philosophy and Objectives, School Facilities, and Student Activities along with various academic subjects. A team of approximately 25 teachers, professors, and administrators came to P.C.H.S. for a three day visit at the end of April to evaluate the faculty in the categories mentioned previously. They raised money by selling Stanley Products, Magazines, and raffling off a side of beef and twenty dollars worth of gas. Great pride was taken in the senior shirts that were made especially for the seniors with everyone’s name. The senior class officers were Bill Howell — President, Nancy Gerrish — Vice President, and Kim Davis — Secretary-Treasurer. The seniors were represented on the Student Council by Kim Davis, Amy Place, Brad Shot- ton, Leanna Timpner, and Bob Yates. Cindy Murry and Derrick Carroll represented the seniors in the Christmas Court. Toward the end of the year everyone looked forward to the class trip to Nashville, Tennessee and enjoyed it immensely. As graduation drew near, a feeling of closeness set in as everyone thought of the great times at PCHS and the years ahead. Not pictured are A. J. Fisher, Bruce Taylor, and James Williamson. First to put on a great prom, and second to start to raise money for colored senior pictures for the yearbook. To raise money for these projects they had a sandwich stand at Mardi Gras; sold Christmas ornaments and gifts; and sold flower bulbs at another time. At the beginning of the year they elected Staci Starkweather, Ralph Loos, Eric Thomas, Matt Mason, and Klint Hawkins, student council representatives. They also elected class officers: Freddie Holland, President; Staci Starkweather, Vice-President; and Bonnie Fulk, Secretary-Treasurer. The Juniors won the float competition in the Homecoming parade as they “Sandwiched the Indians.”’ At the Christmas dance the Juniors were represented by Ross Guthrie and Kathy McKown, who was first maid Pictures not available for: Ronald Ferrari and Susan Lukes. The class acquired their first taste of politics by electing Trisha Caupert, Karen Fulk, Jamie Grafton, and Shay Hagel to represent them in the student council and Bridget Hiller, Elizabeth Eddy, and Melissa Runion as Class Officers. The Class of ‘88 later displayed their salesmanship as they began building funds for their treasury by selling candy and calendars. The freshmen participated in the Homecoming festivities by dressing up in various costumes throughout the week. They also entered a float in the parade and were represented in the Court by Stephanie Shirk. The freshmen also played an active role in the initiation process. Their achievements didn’t end there, however, at the Sparta Tourney they also placed second after winning two of the four matches they competed in. With the returning seniors leading them on, the var- sity squad bumped, set, and spiked their way to a 14- 12 record. The J.V. squad, being full of talent, worked their way to an 11-7 record. Some of which were being dribbled by newcomers to the sport. The J.V. team’s season was con- sidered more as a learning experience due to the fact that five of the seven girls making up the team were first year players. Through many hard practices these girls im- proved their basketball skills, and were able to pull off a one point win over Sparta The Varsity team had a disappointing season, winning only two games. One was a 66-43 win over Tamaroa in the first round of the Regionals. The girls returned only to be beaten 45-35. Three seniors, Carolyn Kellerman, Kim Hill, and Rose Zimmerman were recognized before the last home varsity game, against Carlyle. The Panthers miss- ed clinching the Conference Championship by two losses, both to the Carlyle Indians finishing with a Conference record of 12-2 There were many exciting moments for these players to remember and look back on through the years. Defeating the DuQuoin Indians three times was only the beginning of their highlights and hard-fought battles. They worked hard in defeating the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats, once by 2 and a second time by 4, against that team which later ad- vanced to the State Finals in Champaign. The Panthers did well in the Carbondale Holiday Tournament defeating the West Frankfort Redbirds 73-50. Once again the Cross- County rivals met in tournament action, and the Panthers beat the In- dians 65-63 in overtime. They were defeated by the Cairo Pilots 52-46, which put them in second place. Jason Carson was named to the All- Tournament team In the mid-season Benton Tournament, the Panthers finished 3-2 Again they met up with the Cairo Pilots and were able to defeat them 71-68. They also saw a victory over Okawville and the state-ranked McLeansboro Foxes. They were defeated by Olney and Benton. Both Jason Carson and Steve Thomas were named to the All-Benton Tourney team. The “Big Blue’ won the Regional Championship by demolishing the Coulterville Eagies and the host Chester Ye wicks As the Panthers advanced to the Sectional Tournament, Pinck- neyville fans were “True Blue” and gave their time and effort to back the Panthers. A pep session was organized for the night before the sold-out game with a very good turnout. Not only students, but several parents came out to learn the cheers and chants and support the team The Thomas Gymnasium was filled with blue and white, fans cheering, and an excited team. Unfortunately Breese Mater Dei, No. 2 ranked in the state, was able to slide by the Panthers by only two points. ‘eS Jason Carson battles hard in the Sectional Game Ross thanks the fans for attending the pep session Steve Thomas handles and protects the ball in the front court Boys’ Varsity Basketball y 3 “Red” Epplin inbounds the ball against Breese. In its fifth year of existence at PCHS, VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) has had another very successful year. Following a trip to Joliet for the state leadership conference, its members were the big winners at the Rend Lake Welding Contest. In fact the Pinckneyville Chapter took the top five places, and the top three winners received full semester scholarships to Rend Lake College. The top five finishers were: Don Laird, 1st place; Brad Hill, 2nd place; Dave Jennings, 3rd place; Dan Cheek, 4th place; and Kevin Carter, 5th place. VICA also had eleven students that qualified for the VICA Skills Olympics. Eligibility for the Olympics was determined by placing in the top twenty in the state, which is further testimony to an outstanding year. The VICA banquet held in May highlighted a great year and honored the industry, school per- sonnel, the community, and its members for their activities and accomplishments. VICA 117 Science Club Participates in Homecoming Activities The 1984-85 Science Club The Science Club started the year by electing officers to lead the club in various activities. The club participated in the Homecoming Parade by entering a float. They had a good turn-out of workers to get the float ready for the parade. The officers held several before-school meetings for the club to decide where they would visit for the end-of-the-year trip. The club decided to have a bake sale and a car wash in order to raise money to go to Six Flags. Rain caused the bake sale to be not as profitable as members had hoped it would be. However, the car wash was profitable. Warm, sunny weather and a good turn-out of workers and cars helped them to raise the money. Members of the club that worked at the bake sale or car wash were eligible to go to Six Flags on May 25th. This trip ended activities for this year’s Science Club. Some of the fondest memories of the Class of 1985 were the times we spent together ip.appy and sad moments. We learned to cope with déath and come to understand the strength of friendship. Weve made many tracks throughout these past four years and we'd like to thank the people whose paths we crossed. Our Co-Advisors, Mr. Herbst and Mr. Hamilton, and the photographers who without their help there would be no yearbook. We hope this yearbook will help you reflect back On the tracks and happenings of 1985 and remember how we grew together and made memories Senior Editors, Kim Davis Nancy Gerrish Michelle Griffin Debbie Hopp Tonya Hull Lara Wilson
