zy ’ aa el er ih Ye a a = As the new school year began, the scorching one-hundred degree temperatures continued; making concen- tration on studies difficult. School was dismissed early for the first few weeks as a result of the extreme heat. On August 29th the thoughts of many were turned toward Lebanon as reports of the first U.S. Marines killed in Beirut were confirmed Panther spirits were raised high in September as the varsity football team defeated Murphysboro for only the third time ever in P.C.H.S. history. Also in September, another historical event took place as Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America During the month of October our city’s name made the headlines many times Starting on October 11th when Air Illinois Flight 710 plane crashed northeast of Pin ckneyville killing ten persons. The 1983 Homecoming game was a rematch of two years ago as we played DuQuoin in the pouring rain and defeated them 3 to 2 Senior Gayla Miller reigned as Homecom- ing Queen. The Panther golf team cap- tured 6th place at the state golf tourna- ment which was also played in the rain Bob Diffenauer, a 1981 graduate of P.C.H.S., who was stationed in Beirut dur- ing a bombing, relieved many when his family finally got a phone call from him The World Series marked the end of another season of baseball as the Baltimore Orioles met the Philadelphia Phillies; the Orioles won 5 to 0 in the fifth game. On October 29th friends and fami ly mourned the death of Ronald Parsell who was killed in an automobile accident on U.S. highway 51. Ronald was a 1982 graduate of P.C.HS. and was a sophomore at S.|.U. Carbondale. The 29th was also the day of Pinckneyville’s Mardi Gras celebration with retiring queen senior Theresa Kujawa giving up her crown to junior Cindy Bruns. And although October came in with lots of rain, there wasn’t a drop to be found when the local business of Contempri Homes burned to the ground On November 2nd the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was made the tenth federal holiday (effective as of the third Monday in January 1986). To close out the fall sports season fellow SWEC team, Anna-jonesboro traveled to Normal, IL where they played Monmouth for the class 3A championship; Mon- mouth won by the score of 26 to 7. opposite page 1.
