School was dismissed early for the first few weeks as a result of the extreme heat. On August 29th the thoughts of many were turned toward Lebanon as reports of the first U.S. Marines killed in Beirut were confirmed Panther spirits were raised high in September as the varsity football team defeated Murphysboro for only the third time ever in P.C.H.S. history. Also in September, another historical event took place as Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America During the month of October our city’s name made the headlines many times Starting on October 11th when Air Illinois Flight 710 plane crashed northeast of Pin ckneyville killing ten persons. The 1983 Homecoming game was a rematch of two years ago as we played DuQuoin in the pouring rain and defeated them 3 to 2 Senior Gayla Miller reigned as Homecom- ing Queen. The Panther golf team cap- tured 6th place at the state golf tourna- ment which was also played in the rain Bob Diffenauer, a 1981 graduate of P.C.H.S., who was stationed in Beirut dur- ing a bombing, relieved many when his family finally got a phone call from him The World Series marked the end of another season of baseball as the Baltimore Orioles met the Philadelphia Phillies; the Orioles won 5 to 0 in the fifth game. On October 29th friends and fami ly mourned the death of Ronald Parsell who was killed in an automobile accident on U.S. highway 51. Ronald was a 1982 graduate of P.C.HS. and was a sophomore at S.|.U. Carbondale. The 29th was also the day of Pinckneyville’s Mardi Gras celebration with retiring queen senior Theresa Kujawa giving up her crown to junior Cindy Bruns. And although October came in with lots of rain, there wasn’t a drop to be found when the local business of Contempri Homes burned to the ground On November 2nd the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was made the tenth federal holiday (effective as of the third Monday in January 1986). To close out the fall sports season fellow SWEC team, Anna-jonesboro traveled to Normal, IL where they played Monmouth for the class 3A championship; Mon- mouth won by the score of 26 to 7. opposite page 1. The 1983-84 Panther Basketball season was a suc- cess. The team was able to achieve two of its major goals; first, to win twenty games and then to win the conference. Unfortunately, they lost the regional to Coulterville. The conference championship. was achieved in a convincing undefeated season. Twice through the course of the year the Panthers were selected WCIL Team of the Week. They were first selected for their impressive victories over DuQuoin and Carlyle and then after clinching the conference championship with an overtime victory against Mur- physboro. The team was led throughout the season by eight seniors. The team played well as a unit, with players fulfilling their roles to form a cohesive unit. Outstanding performances by Karl Kellerman and Jim- my Carlson enabled them to achieve individual awards. The two players were selected to the Southwestern Egyptian All-Conference Team. With only three seniors on the team, the majority of team members were underclassmen. Seniors Jeff Starkweather and Dennis Ginn provided many positive moments for the year. Jeff consistently won the pole vault event in the various meets and often was among the leaders in the 110 m. low hurdle race. Dennis continued his distance form from cross-country season often scoring points in the, mile and two mile runs. Jeff capped his Senior, MVP season with fourth place finishes in both the pole vault and the 110 m. “lows” at the Red Bud sectional meet and a 13'6” vault, good for fourth place, in the Meet of Champions held at Carbondale at the conclusion of the season. The team will miss the leader- ship and fine performances of its seniors, but Coach Dick Corn is optimistic for the future as he sees a large group of underclassmen moving up to the top ranks of future track teams. 1. In September, the ladder diagram, which lists the pages and the order they will appear in the yearbook, was designed and assignments were distributed. Because of the senior pictures being in color, 64 pages were due in February, so the staff began making layouts and writing captions, The photographers printed the pictures ordered by the staff members and the first deadline was met. For the second deadline in April, another 56 pages were mailed to the printing company, and the last deadline was met by sending the rest of the pages at the end of May. By working hard during and after school, and with help from Mr. Herbst and Mr. Hamilton, the yearbook was completed and students anticipated its distribu- tion in August. The 1983-84 National Honor Society was able to have a prosperous year due to the help of the spon- sor, Mrs. Lularose Wilson. The addition of sophomores, for the first time in our NHS history, in- cresaed the number of members to over fifty students. During the year, several guest speakers addressed the NHS members. Steve Hull, a ‘79 graduate of P.C.H.S. and student at S.1.U. medical school, discussed the various aspects of college life. At the annual Christmas party, eleven recent graduates, represen- ting various colleges, told about their experiences at college. Doug Carlson, from Rend Lake College, ex- plained financial aid and the costs of attending college. Toward the end of the school year, the 2nd Annual Spring Banquet was held for all NHS members and their families. The Science Club, under sponsor Mr. Birkner, elected Kurt Grady (president), Brian Voorhees (vice-president), and Angie Lambert (secetary) to take charge of the club as the 1984 officers. Even though the Science Club had an active year, they did experience some disappointing moments. The club’s float did not measure up to its expectations due to a poor working turnout. The few members who did attend had to abort the float late at night since they foresaw the balance of the float would not have a chance to be com- pleted. The Homecoming Variety Show also proved to be another disappointment as their version of “She Blinded Me With Science” did not defend its first place title from the previous year. Despite all of the letdowns, the club was energetic about planning a trip to the St. Louis Zoo as well as a fund-raising activity. The solution to the club’s money problems was to “cell” stuffed animals. This simple fund-raiser turned out to be a success and enabled the club to take an electrifying trip to the zoo, where they saw polar bears, wild “bohrs”, and perigreen (peregrine) falcons, to name a few. The Science Club finished the year by reflecting back to its positive moments and began looking forward to next year’s brighter and bigger adventures SCIENCE CLUB 101 French Club Enjoys Successful French Club Members — Front Row, L to R: John Marler, Mary Baudison, Cory McClurken, Dan Grafton, Candace Wright, Dawn Johnson, Tara Keene, Kelly Hawkins, Amy Mathenia, Chris Rennison, Debbie Treat, Tracie Singer, Tobias Ekelin, Susan Mohr, Kathy McKown. 2nd Row: Mike Strickland, Mindy Hagene, Kathy Mitchell, Terri Loyd, Paula Lambert, Freddie Holland, Janet Bigham, Shelly Hartstirn, Rhonda Perkey, Linda Bender, Tonya Hull, Debbie Hopp, Nancy Epplin, Bernadine Loos, Leslie Ogilvie. 3rd Row: Bart Ferrero, Marjorie Parsell, Beth Perry, Donna Urbanek, Rhonda Shaw, Judy Lacy, Angie Lambert, Mary Beth Hagene, Traci Chap- man, Gayla Miller, Lisa Wilson, Darcy Andrews, Tammy Kujawa, Joy Watson, Mary Bochantin. 4th Row: Anna Lynch, Karen Cheek, Amy Cheek, Carman Jausel, Lisa Schwebel, Kim Black, Mark Urbanek, Danny Opp, Lisa Dinkins, Derrick Carroll, Mike Huff, Bill Howell, Michelle Brand, Kathy Stone, Paula Yeager, Ann Zimmerman 5th Row: Lynne Murphy, Cheryl Houghland, Chris Perkey, Becki Mohr, Stevie Hill, Nancy Gerrish, Terri Kuhnert, Robbie McCrary, Lara Wilson, Julie Pursell, Alex Ed- dy, Darren Hopp, Pat Schratz, Mary Woodside.
