Juniors 39 Seniors Complete Memorable Final Year The Seniors had a very busy final year at PCHS. They began earning money in the fall to pay for the class trip. The Seniors sold magazine subscriptions and Stanley products. During foot- ball and basketball seasons, they worked in the concession stand. As they ordered graduation announcements and were measured for caps and gowns, the Seniors realized that their high school years were almost over. Their spring ac- tivities included the Senior Class Trip to Nashville, Tenn. and the Junior-Senior Prom. Soon it was time for the big event, Graduation. This was the last time that they would all be together, as they would soon be going their separate ways. As in past years, planning Homecoming was the main responsibility of the Student Council. The Coun- cil organized the annual parade, chose the theme ‘‘Red Man — Dead Man” for Homecoming Week, and decorated for the dance. This year was the most profit making year that the Council ever had. The Student Council sponsored a canned food drive to help needy families during Christmas time. The 1982-83 Student Council did a fine job of representing their classmates and had a great year. 62 Student Council NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERS — Bottom Row, Left to Right: Lisa House, Shari Caupert, Beth Bender, Angie Lueker, Kathy Kellerman, Michelle Smith, Kay Pyatt, Missy Crain, Tina Morrow. The NHS was very active, conducting many meetings throughout the year. The Society selected the following officers: Lisa Whitson — President, Beth Bender — Vice President, Connie Epplin — Secretary, Gay Lynn Opp — Treasurer, Lisa House — Student Council Representative, and Kathy Kellerman — Alternate. Starting out the year, the NHS decorated a car for the Homecoming Parade and entered the pep club banner contests. Various great speakers included Therese Lyons and Sharon Baker who lectured on the Operation Snowball program which deals with teenage drug and alcohol problems. Continuing on in the year, the NHS had a Christmas party, held a financial aid seminar for college-bound juniors and seniors, and finally honored the senior NHS members and their parents with a Spring Banquet. The National Honor Society, helped by their spon- sor Mrs. Lularose Wilson, had a very prosperous year. National Honor Society 63 The Junior Class Congress members were elected early in the year by their fellow classmates. They held many meetings and made important decisions in hopes of creating the best prom possible for the graduating seniors. They began their fund-raising activities by selling various merchandise from QSP, a fund-raising corporation. They also increased their treasury by selling Panther mugs around the school and during home basketball games. The Juniors really show- ed class spirit during these two fund-raising activities. After the money was earned, the Junior Class Congress sat down and selected a number of themes out of which the class chose “Magical Moments,” a faraway dream land. The Con- gress then selected a blue, silver, and white color theme and chose prom favors which resembled miniature class rings. Chorus was very active this year, per- forming for various activities throughout the community. They tried something new this year by creating a smaller vocal ensemble, composed of ten members, which did much of the touring. This group performed at the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Perry Manor Nursing Home, the Gardens High Rise, and the Easter Seal Radiothon. The full Chorus performed dur- ing Christmas at Perry Manor and at the Christmas Concert, a concert with the Jazz Band, Senior Recognition Concert, and Baccalaureate. By combining hard work with dedication, this group has become a fine part of the music department at PCHS. Small vocal ensemble. Vernon Sweetcorn and Watermelon Festival and the Salem Little Egypt Festival parades. The flags, rifles, and poms also won Best Auxiliary Group at the West Frankfort field show. The Marching Panthers ended their fall season by marching at an SIC football game. The East Peoria Raiders, led by Mr. Vroman’s father, were the Panthers’ guests at Madri Gras, and joined the concert band at the EIU Celebration in Charleston. They performed three numbers with Pinckneyville, and played a _ short concert by themselves. The Panther Pep Band is a group of band members that volunteer to come early, rehearse, and then per- form at home basketball games. They always make their presence known by cheering and playing such tunes as ‘‘Go Big Blue”’ and ‘‘Sweet Georgia Brown” as the players come on the floor. They also exhibited Mr. Vroman directs the band in the National Anthem. school spirit by making posters and entering them in Pep-Club sponsored contests. Every poster entered by the band won an award. A group of Pep Band members recorded a tape to send to the IHSA, hoping to be chosen to play at the state basketball tournament. The group for the fourth year in a row made the ‘Sweet Sixteen,”’ but wasn't included in the performing bands. They also returned to Carbondale this year to perform at a Saluki basket- ball game. A jazz band was formed this year, consisting of 17 members and one vocalist. This group shared a suc- cessful concert with the Chorus. The Concert Band performed their annual Christmas and Winter concerts. They also hosted Sparta and Chester at Tri-City this year. Concert Band received a first at Organizational contest, and honored the seniors at the Senior Recognition Concert. Four students were chosen to participate in the Eld Honor Band. THE NATIONAL STUDYING VOCATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR BOYS AGRICULTURE As in past years, the Future Farmers of America is an organization that is busy all year round. They participate in many contests and do very well in everything they participate in. The FFA Sponsor, Mr. Sam Robb, is more than just a teacher and an advisor to the young men and women that are in FFA; he is a source of guidance to them and most of all he is their friend. Along with Mr. Robb, the student ag teacher Mr. Scott Page also helped the FFA members. Even before the ‘“‘green ’ freshmen are initiated into the FFA, the club starts participating in the many contests, judgings, and shows that have become familiar to all FFA clubs throughout the country. Some of these include: Ag Mechanics Con- test, Section 24 Crops Judging, State Crops Judg- ing, Horse Judging Contest, Parliamentary Pro- cedure Contest, Section 24 Fatstock Judging, State Livestock Judging, Section 24 Dairy Judging, State Dairy Judging, Section 24 Farm Management, FFA Livestock Show, Ag Mechanics Show, Poultry and Grain Show, Section 24 Soil Judging, Section 24 Tractor Driving, Section 24 Foundation Awards, and Creed Contests. Receiving State FFA Farmer Degrees this year were David Loos, Raymond Baudison, and Caroline Ruppert. A lot of hard work goes into preparing for this honor and it is well deserved. At the Illinois State Fair on August 5, 1982 Doug Bauersachs won 6th place in the State Tractor Operator Contest. This past s ummer, on August 12 and 13, 1982, our male FFA members won lst Place Consolida- tion Bracket Champs in the State FFA Softball Tournament. As a new activity this year, the FFA sponsored the annual Heart Fund for the Helen Kuykendall Chapter for raising money to donate to the hospital for heart equipment. They did a good job in organizing a variety show and a dance. Because FFA is an all-year round organization, it is hard to list all the many activities in which they participate. It is important to understand that all FFA members, male and female alike, put a lot of hard work into what they do because they believe in the preservation of the agricultural community in the United States and abroad. VICA 77 French Club Helps Sponsor Foreign Language Fair The French club began this year’s activities by decorating a car for Homecoming week and by putting up a stand at Mardi Gras. They then com- a bined with the Spanish Club Sy and took a trip to West Port yr Plaza in St. Louis. Both clubs then sold international Candies, had a Christmas party, sold carnations for Valentine's Day, and attended the Foreign Language Day at SIU-C, where the can-can dancers took 3rd place. The clubs then decided to try a Foreign Language Fair of their own. All of the foreign language classes participated . and the outcome was good. Posters as well as scrapbooks ke and slides were displayed, food “ was sold, and the can-can dancers once again entertained ” the crowd. The club then con- a ‘hay si cluded the year by electing the 1983-84 officers. Ten members also traveled to Mexico on June 22. During their ten day trip they visited MeXico City, the silver-mining town of Taxco, and the beautiful beaches of Acapulco where they had a very enjoyable time. Along with the French Club, they held their Christmas party, sold carnations and international candies, and participated at Foreign Language Day at SIU-C. Other high points included hard- fought, regular season victories over Nashville, Du- Quoin, Sparta, Anna-Jonesboro and McLeansboro and a second place finish in the Regional Tournament at Sparta. The Lady Panthers had beaten DuQuoin for the third time this year in the second round of the regional before losing to the host school in the finals. The Lady Panther Junior Varsity, with Dan Herbst in his first year as their coach, finished with a record of nine wins and six losses. Some JV highlights in- cluded their two victories over Carlyle — one in over- time and the other a one point victory with that margin provided by Mary Beth Hagene’s one and bonus free throws with three s econds left in the game. Other highlights included close-game victories in defensive battles with Chester and McLeansboro and a win against Anna-Jonesboro in which all players scored. The highlight of the season was winning their eighth straight regional champion- ship, a streak which has lasted for all of Coach Dick Corn's eight seasons as head coach. This was a rebuilding year for the Panthers as many underclassmen saw a great deal of varsity action and gained valuable varsity experience. The ‘Big Blue’ squad has much to look forward to in the next few years based on the success of the underclass teams since the junior varsity, sophomores, and freshmen finished with records of 15-3, 10- 5, and 14-6 respectively. The Varsity team had some exciting moments as they won hard-fought victories at home against eventual SWE Conference champion Sparta and eliminated Nashville from the conference race with a one-point win late in the season. The Panthers beat the conference champ Bulldogs in the finals of the regional to show their strength over the Ran dolph County school. The Junior Varsity won their last seven games and fifteen of their last sixteen after two losses at the beginning of the season. The Sophomores won the consolation championship of the Murphysboro tournament to wind up their season on a positive note, and the Freshmen won the conference tournament to highlight their season. Panthers receive regional award. The Panthers will miss the play of graduating seniors Steve Huggins, Mike Millikin, Tim Robinson and MVP Brook Walton, but with the fine showing by the underclassmen, the winning tradition of Pinckneyville High School basketball looks to be in good shape for the future.
