Prin cknewville Community High School Pinckneyville, Hlinois a 49 1981-1982 Pyramid — aa Ba rbara i ae Cu Aries Dated Shh Glen = Csalendi 2 Contents 1982 Pyramid Dedicated to Whrs. Wibhon Some people, some teachers must demand respect at every turn in order to try to get students to act appropriately. These people, these teachers often have a difficult time and face a seemingly endless hassle with students. Ohter people, other teachers command respect because of the way they handle themselves in many situations. These people, these teachers have very few difficulties and get along well with students. In fact, they are often called upon to solve the hassles which exist between the first kind of teachers and students. The kind of per son, the kind of teacher who gets along well with students and faculty and is described as problem-solver, counselor, and friend is Mrs. Lularose Wilson, to whom the 1981-82 Pyramid is proudly dedicated Students, faculty, and community members alike recognize and respect the high standards by which Mrs. Wilson conducts her personal and professional life. She is well-known in the community for her dedicated service to her church and to her job as guidance counselor at Pinckneyville Community High School. Her strength and faith in the face of adversity (and she has certainly had more than her share) are as widely known and respected as her dedication. Though she has been faced with many difficult times and hardships in her personal and pro- fessional life, she continues in her straightforward manner to conquer all obstacles. Mrs. Wilson's teaching career has covered over thirty years. She did her undergraduate work at SIU-C, receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education in music and English. She taught for three years in grade school in Hurst Bush. Mrs. Wilson joined the PCHS faculty in 1954; her first teaching assignment was Junior English and chorus. At that time, those subjects were taught on the first floor in what is now the business education rooms. Chorus sometimes met in that room, sometimes in the auditorium, and met during noon hour in some years, after school in other years. Despite these potential conflicts, Mrs. Wilson kept many students involved in choral music, including participa- tion in fine Broadway musicals such as “Bye-Bye, Birdie,”’ “Pajama Game,” “Girl Crazy,”’ “Annie Get Your Gun, and “Oklahoma.” In ad- dition to these responsibilities, she has also sponsored cheerleaders, Future Teachers of America, and the National Honor Society at various times during her career While keeping her busy teaching schedule, Mrs. Wilson also found time to continue her education. She received her Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Illinois at Urbana. This qualified her for her present guidance counselor position. Her main duties now include testing, advising students registering for classes, help ing students with college and career choices — especially assisting students in the necessary steps in college application registration and in scholarship application, and general counseling of students with pro- blems related and “‘un-related”’ to school Mrs. Wilson's school schedule remains busy, yet she maintains some special interests outside of school. In addition to her church work already mentioned, she particularly enjoys visiting her two grand- children, Brian and Brooke of Jackson, Tennessee. As well, she likes to cook and to travel. In these areas of interest and in her work, Mrs. Wilson is noted for her special, caring approach toward people and her uncanny perseverance, strength, and faith. In all that she does she commands respect from students, faculty, and community members. So it is with all due respect, this year’s yearbook staff is proud to dedicate the 1982 edition of the Pyramid to Mrs. Lularose Wilson. Mrs. Wilson takes time to counsel freshman Becki Mohr. Grady Superintendent District Football Coach The A person may think that when the staff of a school stays the same from one year to the next, the school would not change very much. PCHS did begin the 1981-82 school year with the same staff that ended last year; however, the school did change a great deal in many dif ferent areas. The Board of Education of Pinckneyville Community High School District 101 underwent some changes, and as the governing body of the school, it made the final decisions which brought about other changes. The staff, the community, and the school were all affected in the fall by one sudden change, the fatal heart attack and tragic death of Board member Mr Charles McKinney. Mr. McKinney, “Chuck” to his many friends, was a well-respected Pin ckneyville businessman, civic leader, and President of the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Board in addition to being a high school board representative. His position on the School Board was filled by Mr. Bob West, who had formerly served on the Board in the 1960's and 1970's. Another change in the Board occurred when Mr. Jim Bauersachs was elected, along with in cumbent Mr. Charles Thomas, in the November election. Mr. Bauersachs occupied the posi tion formerly held by Mr. Stuart Wright The teaching staff also began the year as it had ended last year. Teachers completing their second year in the district were granted tenure contracts; these included Mr. David Brunty, Mr. David Colombo, Mrs. Neva Corn, Mrs. Linda Johnson, Mr. Larry Pfau, and Miss Linda Rudolph. In the spring, the accidental death of Mr. Thomas Shea changed the faculty, and again the staff, the community, and the school felt the loss due to tragedy. Mr. Shea's classes in the Mining and Reclamation Department were led by Mr. Sam Loiacano, who was hired as a “permanent substitute” for the last six weeks of school While the staff underwent sudden, unexpected change, the school building and the cur riculum saw a number of planned renovations and alterations. The major renovation project within the school was in the Girls’ Gym area. Other projects and changes in the building and in the curriculum were related to this change, and many changes, independent of the renovation project, also took place On the west side of the Girls’ Gym in the area formerly occupied by the student lounge and the photography lab, a girls’ physical education locker room was built. On the east side in the area that was the p.e. locker room, a girls’ athletics locker room was built. Room 18 on the se cond level of the gym was converted into a photography lab, so Mrs. Sheley needed a new space for her Individualized Instruction students. The former Language Lab on the third floor became that new space and also housed the new computer added to Miss Ortolan’s Title | Remedial Reading and Math Program Better utilization of space and a response to the “information glut’’ prompted some changes and additions in the library. The most notable change was the creation of a second office in the back part of the library. This housed a number of the library additions, including microfiche readers, storage files, and a printer of magazine articles from microfiche. The addition of storage shelves in the same area also freed a great deal of the audio-visual equipment to be stored in places other than in Mrs. Wilson's guidance office Alterations in the curriculum were many. Among the major changes were the expanded course offerings through semester classes at the junior and senior levels in English. The tradi- tional English 3 and 4 classes gave way to such courses as Introductory and Advanced Ex ear 1981-82 Dean Brewer — Building Principal, Administrative Assistant, Freshman Dean Smith — Vocational Direc- tor, Administrative Assistant pository Writing, The Novel and Important Works, Heroes in Literature, Survey of American Literature, Selections in English Literature, and English for Careers. Many of these courses in- tegrated juniors and seniors into English classes for the first time. Also, the addition of com- puters in the Business Education Department expanded their curriculum to include classes in basic programming. The Social Science Department enrolled more students with an increased emphasis of the freshman level social science course. As well, the Science Department ex panded its offerings with the addition of a course in Human Anatomy and Physiology Along with all of the building and curricular changes that the Board approved, a couple of policy changes were instituted and reinstated. A new absence category, the approved absence, was initiated to cover students’ absences approved by the parents yet falling bet ween the excused and unexcused absences that remained part of the school attendance policy. Due to interest expressed by a number of senior class members and to help emphasize academics, the Board also reinstated a policy of recognizing the class valedictorian and salutatorian at graduation exercises. The students with the highest and the second highest overall grade point average will receive such recognition Thus, the ending of the year, graduation, contained change, much as the rest of the 1981 82 year revealed change, though that certainly wasn’t how a person would have thought of the year when it began Administration 11 Sudastvial Arka, Business Education. Parades, field show competitions, and halftime show are all part of the Marching Panthers’ busy schedule. On August 11, the 1981-82 Marching Panthers started preparing for their marching season. Along with this, they rehearsed two hours every Tuesday evening. Marching with 108 participants, the band competed in six parades; among these they received one Best Musical Group, one third place, and one fourth place award. On their agenda were three field competitions in which they received one first and one second place. At the I.S.U. Field Competition the band did well in receiv- ing a fifth place in the Class B bands and sixth place in the small school class consisting of 25 bands. The Mar- ching Panthers also played at four home football games (including pre-game and half-time performances). The Panther Pep Band played at nine home basket- ball games as well as pep assemblies. The pep band practiced before the games and always played a well- rounded style of music. The students that participated in this group are full of school spirit, and they showed this to the audience at every game. A select group of the 54 volunteers in Pep Band recorded a tape that would give them the opportunity to play at the state basketball tournament. The ‘“‘Peppy Panthers” were included in the “Sweet 16” group of bands, but didn’t make the final cut. The Pep Band also was chosen to play at a SIU-C home basketball game. After auditions were over, the Concert Band started preparing for the many activities that they do. These in- cluded: Christmas Concert, Winter Concert, Tri-City, IHSA Solo Ensemble Contest (18 — first places and 3 — second places), IHSA Organizational Contest (a 1st place), and the Senior Recognition Concert. Three students were selected to be members of the District IMEA Band. These students were: Barbie Thomas, Mark McClurken, and Rob Phillips. The Band Officers for the 1981-82 season were Mark McClurken — President, Stu Wright — Vice President, Shari Caupert — Secretary, and Gail Pyatt — Treasurer. The P.C.H.S. Band will be guests at the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. Their stay will be from June 22-25, 1982 at which time they will march in a parade and enjoy the fair. moth Pep Band Members: Front Row: Jeff Starkweather, Kenneth Mohr, Mark McClurken, Gail Pyatt, Beth Bender, Dean Boismeir, Doug Mohr. VICA Wiombsavs Athend Springfield (Convention io hee belt = VICA (Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America) is associated with the Mining and Reclamation class as well as the industrial classes. The group is in its third year and Co-Advisor Ray Lambert felt that they have come along well in that time. He was pleased to have 11 boys qualify for State in Diesel Mechanics division and three boys under supervision of Glen Hamilton qualify in Electrical Trades and Industrial Electronics. Mr. Lambert said they are long on competition, but short on leadership in the club which involves learning organization at meetings, and competing in contests such as essay, reporting, and scrapbooks that members put together to illustrate their projects and knowledge. In March members competed in areas such as Welding, Mechanics, Drafting, and Electrical Trades at the Region 16 competition. The VICA Banquet held in May honored the industry, school personnel, the community, and members for their activities and accomplishments in the past year. These members went to the Springfield State Skill Olympics and Conven- tion in April: Dave Degenhardt in Electrical Trades; Ron Parsell and Greg Ep- plin in Industrial Electronics; Fred Kellerman, Leo Suchomski, Bill Wilcox, Claude Rains, Jim Schwarz, Kenny Loos, Don Hill, Dave Toler, Dave Miller, and Cliff Miller in Diesel Mechanics. She stayed with Bev and Mindy Moritz for three months and volunteered her services as a guest speaker for all of the Spanish classes. The Spanish Honor Society grew in size this year as sixteen new members were selected. They elected officers for the 1982-83 year and chose Bar- bie Thomas as the “Best Spanish Student.” With the French Club, they sold red and white carnations for Valentine’s Day, attended a foreign- language day at SIU-C, and had a spring party to close the year’s activities. Kent Lazenby Brian Rushing 102 Varsity Basketball Panthers Repeat as Etdoraads Champs The 1981-82 basketball Panthers were a team of surprises. At season's outset, very few people expected a great deal out of this “unknown” team that was following the super (as in super-sectional) team of a year ago Though they didn't match the 29-4 record of 1981, the 23-8 record far 1982 was certainly respectable, and the season had some fine moments. Among the fi ne moments was the Panthers’ successful defense of their Eldorado Tournament championship. Wins over Meridian, Anna Jonesboro, host Eldorado, and cross-county rival DuQuoin — in an ex citing overtime match — sent the championship trophy home to Pin- ckneyville for the second straight year Close games dominated the mid-season Benton Tournament, where the Panthers finished in a second place tie, In the round-robin affair, Pin ckneyville won a one-point game against Cairo, lost a hard-fought, double overtime game to Edwardsville, had a relatively easy ten point win over Olney, then won an overtime thriller over Okawville, only to lose to the host Rangers in the final game The exciting moments didn't end there as the conference race was yet to be decided. The Panthers had some chances throughout the season to take over the top spot and stayed in the race until the final weekend of the conference season. Eventually, the Panthers finished behind Nashville and DuQuoin for third place in the tight Southwest Egyptian Conference. The season's excitement wasn't over, however, as the Panthers entered regional tournament action. They rolled over Steeleville and Sparta in con secutive twenty point wins to claim their seventh consecutive regional title under Coach Dick Corn. On to the sectional, the powerful Panthers ad- vanced to the finals with a surprisingly easy victory over Freeburg. The season's excitement and surprises ended in the championship game as the Panthers faced rival Okawville in the sectional final for the third con- secutive year. In the annual trade-off of sectional championships, it was the Rockets’ turn to take home the title as they blasted the Panthers to avenge last year’s defeat as well as Pinckneyville’s win over them in the Benton Tournament The 1981-82 Panthers, the ‘‘Team of Surprises, ’ had provided loyal Panther-backers with plenty of excitement in completing Coach Corn's fourth consecutive twenty win season and were only one victory away Darren Hopp — free throw percentage leader from last year's supersectional finish — a fine showing for a team that few people expected to be so successful baad Panthers perform their “‘Magic Circle” before the game.
