With this in mind, the Pyramid staff has dedicated this book to our fifty year old building and to the first class to graduate from this building — the Class of 1930-31. In 1930, the new school’s of- ficials, planners, and architects erected and planned a building that was “built to last” and is still something to be proud of. The Board considers matters of policy such as attendance and discipline and makes decisions on these and matters related to budget and personnel as well. Special events, such as those involved with the fif- tieth anniversary celebration, are also handled by the Board. To assist them in these decisions, the administration and the faculty may make recom- mendations since they are more closely involved in the day-to-day operation of the school. The Board appropriated funds to renovate Thomas Gymnasium to make it more energy-efficient, so students returned to find bricks replacing the opaque glass that had been in place since the gym was built. As well, funds were provided to turn a storage room into a photography lab to meet the need created by the addition of photography to the cur- riculum. Expenditures for other books and supplies and materials are also decided by the Board through administrative recommendation. Much discussion about further changes in the fifty year old building took place during the year. By recommendation of the ad- ministration, a number of changes in faculty were made, primarily to fill vacancies. The new additions were Mr. David Brunty in Speech and Social Science, Mr. David Colombo as Librarian, Mrs. Neva Corn and Miss Linda Rudolph in Girls’ Physical Education and Athletics, and Mrs. Linda Johnson in Business Education. The faculty assumes responsibility for teaching over sixty units of credit that are offered. For most teachers, this means at least six hours of teaching per day. In addition to this responsibility, which also includes maintaining general discipline in the school, many teachers are responsible for extra-curricular activities and athletics as well. Four seniors: Cathy Beninati, Jane Giacomo, Tammy Kalb, and Judy Suchomski, represented the experience on the team and helped to provide the squad’s leadership. The Lady Panthers put in many hours of practice on the various skills involved in the game — serving, bumping, setting, and spiking — as well as blocking, positioning and other defensive tactics. The practice time paid off with three match victories. The graduation of the four seniors, including MVP Judy Suchomski, will be noticed by next year’s club. But juniors Nancy Denman and Angie Flure and sophomore Nancy Craig also saw plenty of varsity action this year. The experience of these three, along with the other girls moving up from the junior varsity, will provide the backbone for next year’s varsity. Cheerleading Camp at Green- ville College in Greenville, Illinois, where they received three-first place ribbons and one-second place ribbon. Along with these awards, the squad also won the honor of being the First Place National Champion Team of that par- ticular camp. Another award was won by Staci Stanton who was named as the First Place National Individual Cham- pion. With these two awards, the squad as a group and Staci as an individual were given another honor of represen- ting the Greenville Camp in the Na- tional Grand Championship held at Lansing, Michigan. The squad was unable to attend the Grand Champion- ship, however, Staci attended it and competed against 229 girls from other states. After returning from camp, the squad began making meng for their purchase of new uniforms. Their money making projects included the selling of All- Occasion Greeting Cards, Merrybells and Adorabells, their own cheerleading clinic, plus a concession stand at the 1980 Panther Invitational Track Meet. The squad was also given money for teaching junior high cheerleaders at the Rend Lake Cheerleading Clinic. With their season finally starting, the squad participated in “painting the town” during Homecoming Week plus decorating the halls for both football and basketball games. 70 CHEERLEADERS At Summer Camp Sherry Hicks Barbara Webber CHEERLEADERS 71 Varsity squad performing ‘Number One” Wrestling J.V.: Front Row: Pam Rushing, Teresa Kujawa, Super-Sectional. What a season it was! Who could forget the season’s opening blitz of Eldorado, or the home opening romp of Benton? One certainly won’t forget the Eldorado Tournament Championship game, the _heart- stopping, one point, double overtime win over Cairo. We will also remember the standing room only crowd at Thomas Gym when Murphysboro came to town for a battle of conference unbeatens. The Panthers won handily and repeated the effort in the St. Valentines’ Day rematch at Murphysboro. Undefeated in con- ference play, the Panthers captured their first con- ference title since 1963, finishing the regular season at 24-3, 14-0 in conference. The “Second Season,” “March Madness,” was still to come. The Panthers rolled through their own Regional, defeating Coulterville and Gorham to ad- vance to the Sparta Sectional. They met and defeated DuQuoin for the fourth time this year to set up a rematch of last year’s final against Okawville. This game proved challenging, but the Panthers came up with the big plays when they needed them, and last year’s verdict was avenged — a one point win over the Rockets. This gave Coach Dick Corn his first Sec- tional Title in his six seasons as Pinckneyville’s head coach. The Panthers’ “Sweet Sixteen” appearance was a disappointing one, as they suffered through the Supersectional at the SIU Arena, losing to the Cairo Pilots who rolled over the Panthers and wound up third in the state. The J.V. team under first year coach Linda Rudolph finished at 7-9. The Lady Panthers’ record is deceiving since one loss was to Carlyle by one point; another was to DuQuoin by five points; still another to Anna by four points. The year had some exciting moments as well. Most notable was a heart-stopping, one-point victory over Murphysboro. Likewise, the J.V. squad had some good games in their up and down year, including an over-time win against Anna. This year’s team was led by seniors Janis Welsch and Michelle Bird. These two were selected to the SWE All-Conference Basketball Team. This was a first for them as well as for Pinckneyville girls. The girls’ team had one more first to add to its list of awards: Janis Welsch was picked by Coaches from Southern Illinois, to be on the Southern Illinoisan All-South Team. At the annual basketball banquet held at the end of the season, Janis Welsch was voted most valuable; Nancy Craig, best defensive; and Rena Shute, most improved. we oN Ore uly) aN. ay 3 A : 32 ‘ mS A bh ’ “a a Donna Hicks shoots for two. Not Pictured: Mr. Glen Hamilton, Advisor. The Pyramid Staff of 1980-81 decided to make this year’s yearbook special not only to the present students at P.C.H.S., but also to the alumni of past years. With this in mind, the staff voted on the dedication, theme, and the cover to start the production of the yearbook. The senior editors led by the new edi- tor-in-chief Barbara Webber, along with co-advisors Mr. Herbst and Mr. Hamil- ton, designed the ladder diagram and distributed assignments. The layout designers then started their pages, work- ing both during and after school hours. The photographers contributed by shooting and processing all of the pic- tures needed to make the yearbook com- plete. The entire staff attended the South- ern Illinois School Press Association (SISPA) Conference at SIU-C on April 24. Awards were presented to the win- ning yearbooks and newspapers from 1979-80. The Pyramid staff worked hard through the year, meeting deadlines, writing copy and selecting pictures. FHA Sponsors Successful Skate-A-Thon FHA’s outstanding project for the year had to be the Skate-A-Thon, which they sponsored to raise money for the March of Dimes cam- paign against birth defects. It was held in April at the Skate-A-Way in DuQuion. CIB-FM'’s Skipper T. Thomas provided the music to keep the skaters going for 6 hours. Over $2,000 was raised by the 100 plus participants. Elaine Dudek received a TV set and Robert Hample- man got a pair of skates for being the top two money earners. Other activities staged were the Cooking and Do-Your-Own-Thing Contest; Mother-Daugh- ter Dinner which members made clothes to model and prepared a variety of foods to serve; a trip to Six Flags for members who had earned enough points; and members prepared the din- ner for the Heart Fund Fair. FHA sponsored the Country Western Dance, Christmas Dance, and the Spring Fantasy Dance. The latter two were the most mem- orable for the students because it gave them the chance to go out fairly much on their own to view and expe- rience the customs of the language they were studying. Students who went to SIU-C for Foreign Language Day were also able to learn about other languages and customs such as Chinese, German and Japanese. Bird The third week in February, 1981, will long be remembered in Pinckneyville. Some people will remember that the basketball Panthers finished an undefeated conference season that week; many, many people will remember that we lost three people closely associated with Pinckneyville Community High School that week Mr. Merrill “Duster” Thomas who put our town on the high school basketball map of Illinois passed away on Wednesday, February 18 at the age of 76. It was the passing of a legend. His record of 498 wins and 118 losses, an .824 winning percentage, is part of that leg end. Vividly memorable for many people in our com munity are the state championship basketball team of 1948, the six straight trips to the state tournament in the 1950's, the four third place finishes in that tour ney other parts of Duster’s legacy as a basketball coach. A special tribute to Duster was held on Friday, Feb ruary 20 before our final conference game. Thomas Gymnasium, named for Duster, was virtually filled to capacity on that night as people remembered his efforts which helped to build the basketball facility, his state record 58 straight wins on that home court, his conference championships which numbered 11 in a 17 year period of time. Most of all, people remem bered the man who was the legend, the man who was primarily responsible for the start of a winning tradi tion in Pinckneyville basketball The winning tradition was carried on as the Pan thers captured the Southwest Egyptian Conference Championship with an undefeated conference record completed that night, the first conference champion ship for Coach Dick Corn, the first championship in 17 years. And people left the gym with a good feeling about what had fakes place The good feeling was replaced by shock and disbe lief the following day as word circulated throughout the town of the tragedy that took the lives of two PCHS students in the early morning hours of Satur day, February 21. Laura Chapman and Will Woodside were identified as the two in the fire-destroyed auto mobile found near the Perry County Fairgrounds Pinckneyville and again been touched and affected by the deaths of young people Memories of Laura, of Will, and of Duster, of the effects that they had on the lives of people in our area, our town, our school will long be with us. Merrill “Duster” Thomas STATE . 1998 CHAMPS Coach “Duster” Thomas with his 1948 Pinckneyville Panther Championship Team.
