The Pyramid Staff of 1979-80 is pleased to announce that the 1980 yearbook, ‘“‘Pieces of Eighty,” is dedicated to Mr. Sam Robb. Mr. Robb graduated from Coul- terville High School in 1963. He continued his education after high school at Southern Illinois Univer- sity Carbondale. In 1968, with a B.S. in Agricultural Education he graduated from SIU-C. He then taught for two years, 1968-70 in Kewanee, Illinois and for three years at Mt. Carmel, Illinois. During that time he was also fur- thering his education, again at SIU-C, to gain an M.S. in Agricul- tural Industries, he graduated with this in 1975. In July of 1973 Mr. Robb moved to Pinckneyville where he has taught agriculture and sponsored FFA at PCHS. Mr. Robb has been an FFA sponsor for ten years. He intends to continue teaching agri- culture on the high school level. He truly enjoys the subject, but even more — he enjoys working with his students. The yearbook staff, along with many others, feel that Mr. Robb is a very dedicated teacher and cares greatly about the education of his students. We are honored to have such a dedicated teacher at Pinckneyville Community High School and hope he will be here for years to come. Dedication 3 A EET I The pieces putting together the 1979- 80 school year at PCHS were exciting and memorable. The piecing together began at the beginning of the year with additions to the teaching department. The new members were Mrs. Elaine Dai- ley, Miss Julie Downs, Mrs. Romona Hatch, Mr. Thomas Shea, and Mrs. Jean Valentine. Football season brought new pieces to the Panthers on Quillman Field, new lights. The Panthers ended the season with a 7-2 record. Homecoming Week filled the halls with spirit and enthusiasm toward the big game against Murphys- boro Red Devils. V.I.C.A., a chapter of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, the new piece to the organizations, was a success for the mining students. Its sponsors were Mr. Shea and Mr. Lambert, who guided the members. The second semester brought Mrs. Susan Beggs replacing Mrs. Lois Smith, and Mrs. Helen Dry substituting for Mrs. Jean Horn. Reorganization in the math department was required after Mrs. Angelyn Schuler moved away. Activities leading off the second semester began with the Fourth Annual Heart Fund Fair. For the second consec- utive year, members of the junior and senior class participated in the Rend Lake JETS Competition. 6 Opening Opening 7 D £ = ® a Oo co Opening 9 The PCHS Board of Education and Administration work together to form the leadership of High School District 101. The first major activity for the club was a taco stand at the Commu- nity Mardi Gras celebration at the end of October. This money- making project helped to pro- vide funds for many other activi- ties during the school year. Spanish Club members held a Christmas Party with The French Club, giving Christmas an international flair. The two clubs combined to take primary responsibility for the Fourth Annual Heart Fund Fair in Feb- ruary. A first for Pinckneyville High School was The Foreign Language Fair held in April. Again the Spanish Club com- bined with the French Club to exhibit class projects about dif- ferent cultures and to sample various foods from many foreign countries. Other highlights of the year included buying sweatshirts with Spanish sayings and travel- ing to the Hacienda Mexican Restaurant in St. Louis. At the community Mardi Gras celebration, they sold baked goods, crepes, paper flowers, Swiss chocolate bars, and chocolate Advent calendars. The French and Spanish clubs co- sponsored a number of activities dur- ing the year. These included trips to St. Louis in the fall to a Mexican restau- rant, in the spring to a French one, and a Christmas party where club mem- bers sampled a great variety of French and Mexican dishes and desserts. The clubs combined to sponsor the Fourth Annual Heart Fund Fair and a Foreign Language Fair in the spring to cele- brate National Foreign Language Week. Volunteers were recruited to construct it, and a theme of ‘‘We See A Vic- tory’’ was chosen. The Seniors received second place for their float and the Homecoming queen and king were Seniors. The queen and king of the Christmas dance were also Sen- iors. The Junior class hosted the Junior Senior Prom with Seniors making up the court, king, and queen. The first major piece was winning first place in the Homecom- ing float competition with their entry “‘Immunize the Red Plague. Next in line was the Tug-O-War competition during the community Mardi Gras activity in which the Juniors came up first again. The major activity of the Junior class was organizing and preparing the Junior-Sen- ior prom. Funds for this activity were raised by having a paper and aluminum can drive. Other pieces which fit together to complete the year included receiving class rings, taking college entrance tests, such as the PSAT and the ACT, and par- ticipating in the Vocational Needs Assessment survey. Now the juniors must look onward to the final piece of their high school life — their senior year. ah a tee | ie Ln ee Junior Class Officers: (Left to Right): Wade Graskewicz, vice-president; Jane Giacomo — secretary-treasurer; Scott Kimmel, president. 92 Juniors a Tammy Rhonda Cizick Cuccatti Kathy Dempsay Bob Diffenauer “$1.98 Beauty Contest’’ held during Lunch C. The Varsity Panthers pieced a fine year 5 of the talent and ambition to a 21-10 } a record. For the second year the Panthers ‘= ] attended the Eldorado Holiday Tourna- ment and again brought home the third place trophy. They started out the tourna- ment by defeating Carmi and Ridgeway to advance to the semi-finals. This placed the Panthers against Cairo, rated 3rd in the state. The Panthers were defeated by Cairo, in overtime, which was the most exciting game of the tournament. The final game of the tournament gave the third place trophy to Pinckneyville over Fairfield. The end of January took the Panthers to the Benton Invitational, this year a Round Robin. The Panthers lost their first game, again to Cairo, but brought back three wins over Edwardsville, Olney, and Okawville. Their final game against Ben- ton, for the championship, was a let down. This loss put the Panthers in a 4- way tie for first place, with a record of 3- 2. Finishing the regular season, the Pan- thers had an 18-9 record and a 7-5 con- ference mark for a second place tie with Nashville. Now the season was at its peak, the Regional Tournament. Their first win, over Tico, advanced the Panthers to the Championship game against Chester This victory brought the Panthers to a home court advantage over Meridian in the first round of the Sectional. The Pan- , = thers once again advanced to the cham- as pionship game. The long awaited victory 4 for a Sectional Title fell short for the Pan- - thers and Coach Corn.
