Meus. Du — One of “our town’s” dedicated teachers The 1977-78 annual staff proudly dedicates this year’s “Pyramid” to Mrs. Helen Dry who has spent twenty-six of her thirty career-years here at Pinck- neyville Community High School teaching Typing I, office machines, office practice, and personal typing. For several years Mrs. Dry served as co-sponsor of Hi-Tri. Before being employed here at PCHS, Mrs. Dry taught at Baird, Bellflower, and Pinck- neyville’s Consolidated 204 schools. She was also the first Perry County Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Away from school Mrs. Dry has found time to enjoy being a 4-H worker since 1956. In addition, Mrs. Dry is also a member of the American Associ- ation of University Women and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Along with being an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Pinckney- ville, Mrs. Dry is a member of the Mar- iners, and sings in the choir. She is one of “our town’s” dedicated teachers. Dn my little town J Giew up believing ae The original plat of Pinckneyville, which was named after Colonel Charles Cotesworth Pinck- ney, was executed on July 21, 1929. Joseph Wells’ home on the south side of the square, was the first house built in Pinckneyville, and became the town’s first licensed tavern. The first dry goods store was owned by Charles Glover. See God keeps his EYE ON US all. Pinckneyville’s bicentennial mural was painted by John Belek and designed under the direction of Larry Wilson. The mural depicts: the fairground gateway arch, representing the oldest county fair in Illinois; two masks, representing the Mardi Gras, the oldest celebration of its type in the Midwest; the old opera house; the old courthouse; a threshing machine, representing the annual Thresherman’s Show: a dragline, representing the area’s largest industry; Colonel Pinck- ney and Commodore Perry for whom our town and county were named. Many organizations and businesses donated material and labor to build these beautiful parks. The Senior Citizens of our town plant flowers in the parks and are in charge of their upkeep. The historic P. N. Hirsch building, which dates back to the turn of the century, was origi- nally used as a home talent opera house where area people performed. In the Twenties it became a dance hall with music furnished by a player piano, fol- lowed later by live music. As early as 1913, the high school used the building for commence- ment exercises up into the late Twenties. In this same period, the first moving picture to come to our town was shown at the Opera House. When the Jackie Cooper craze hit the U.S., a look-alike contest was held at the Opera House. The Pinckney- ville Post Office was located under the Opera House during this time, together with the P.N. Hirsch store which eventually enlarged and turned the Opera House into a warehouse area. 13 eI Vnyeen 7s | Oe Education Emcee a Yel ae Employees The PCHS building that we now attend was constructed and finished by 1930. Throughout its 48 years, the school has employed ten principals. From 1930 to 1932 Harry Wilson was the first to serve the new and growing PCHS. In 1933, PCHS newcomer, Howard Ketring, became our principal until 1941. Our third principal, Roland Keene, was here for only one year when he retired to become a commander in the Navy in World War II. He was replaced by Clyde McDaniel until 1944. The 1944-45 year brought Har- ley Quillman to PCHS as our fifth principal. After Mr. Quill- man’s four years, Roland Keene returned to serve as principal from 1948 to 1957, followed by Loren Lemmon, who was here from the 1957-58 years until Ne or ee Pde eee . 1962. This year, the Pyramid Staff would like to acknowledge the service of Mr. Jack Stumpe, President of the Board. Mr. Stumpe was elected to the P.C.H.S. school board in April of 1961. One year later (1962). he was elected President of the Board. and has held the office to this date. He has worked hard, with the help of the other board members. to uphold and maintain the quality of edu- cation at P.C.H.S. This year the P.C.H.S. Board of Education has approved several expansions. By the end of this summer, the building will be in compliance with the life, health, fire. and safety code. They are also expanding the school’s vocational program with an addition to the shop area, which will provide additional staff members. The Board is keeping P.C.H.S. growing to meet the educational needs of “our town.” Sa.) A graduate from the University of Arkansas, Mr. Grady has been employed at the following schools: Teacher-coach at Sikeston Public School, Sikeston, Missouri for three years; Superintendent of Schools, Bloomfield, Missouri for seven years; Superintendent of Schools, Morrisonville Community School, Morrisonville, Illinois for foumyears; and Superintendent of Schools, Illiopolis Community Unit District, Illiopolis, Illinois for seven years. From Rest and Sleep, which but thy picture be, Much pleasure, then from thee much more much flow; And soonest our best men with thee do go — Rest of their bones and souls’ delivery! Thou’rt slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell; And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke.
