Classes are gone forever, The good times we spent are gone. No more rushing from class to class. The untidy lockers, Friday night games, and experiences in clubs are all part of the past. Yet when we leave we do take all our memories of these and other things with us. This yearbook is devoted to representing a small portion of these memories. REMEMBER ... Stanton, with his outstanding qualities of congeniallity, willing cooperation, and interest, is able to accom- plish the complex task of coordinating the diversified units which make up the modern high school, With his continually reaffirmed interests in students and his tell-it-like-it-is attitude, Mr. Stanton measures up to the demands of the principal's job. BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Harlen Yeager Mr. Lloyd Middleton-School Attorney Mr. Billy Craig Mr, Jack Stumpe-President Dr. Herb Chapman Mr, Bob West Mr, Dean Crumbacher Mr, Richard Pyatt SCHOOL LIFE = wen A 8 Oey CRN ton te ee a a — a Sa : _ LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The language department of P, C,H. S. consists of English, French, Spanish, and Speech, In the English department, Mrs. Alice Messamore, Mrs, Carole VanDoren, Mrs, Doris Rottschalk, Mr. Harral Hall, and Mr. Ernest Queen teach the various levels. En- glish Literature classes are taught by both Mrs. VanDoren and Mr. Queen. In the foreign language section, Mrs, Van- Doren is the French teacher and Miss Anita Gullett teaches Spanish. The Speech depart- ment is instructed solely by Mrs. Rottschalk, MR. MRS, DORIS ROTTSCHALK HARRAL HALL MR, ERNEST QUEEN MISS ANITA GULLETT . CAROLE VANDOREN ALICE MESSAMORE _— MRS. MARY FELTMEYER MR. STEPHEN BELL MATH P.C.H.S. graduates have been known to score high on college placement tests. Such achievements are due to our fine math teachers. Freshmen are under the tutor- ing of Mr. Thomas in General Math or perhaps Algebra I under Mrs. Feltmeyer or Mr. Bell. Mrs. Feltmeyer also teaches Geometry. Mr. Bell takes care of Algebra II, Senior Math, and Consumer Math. Students can learn about angles, theorems, exponents, sines and cosines to their heart's content. Maybe Mr. Bell will someday even divulge the secret of his grading scale. How about it Mr. Bell? | MR. MERRIL THOMAS in | MR. GEORGE McPHEETERS MR. ALLEN BURBANK SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Science usually brings back memories of dissected frogs from Biology, spilled sulfuric acid in Chemistry, or weights dropped on somebody's toe in Physics. Somehow Mr. Allen Burbank survived all the mishaps in Chemistry, Physics and General Science this year. Biology and the dead frogs aren't very dan- gerous so Mr. George McPheeters also escaped unscathed. Hopefully these two fine science teachers will have the courage to return and face next year's students. FINE ARTS The Fine Arts department had a new addition this year, Art. Under the direction of Miss Pam Workman, students can now give way to all their creative desires. Included in this year's program were ink engraving, macrame, watercolor painting, modern sculpture and leather work- ing. Many students showed consid- erable talent as evidenced in the displays in the library. Band and Chorus moved into the new band room in the middle of this school year. A big improvement over the old band room, the new music facilities made the Chorus sound even better. Mr. Michael Thomas was the new Band and Chorus instruc- tor this year. MR. MICHAEL THOMAS MISS PAM WORKMAN 7 MR. DAVE RENN SOCIAL STUDIES Every P.C.H.S. student must take some form of Social Studies at one time or another so they probably had either Mr. Wib Ragland or Mr. Dave Renn. Mr. Ragland handles Government and World Cultures letting Mr. Renn, a newcomer, take over the juniors in U.S. History and the seniors in Psychol- ogy. Two language teachers also help teach in the social studies department. Mrs. Messamore and Miss Gullet teach social and economics problems and U.S. History, respectively. All these teachers do their best to try and educate students in Social Studies, an area that is essential in today's complex world. ———a MR. GLEN HAMILTON VOCATIONAL Aspiring architects and electrical workers will sooner or later come under the instruction of Mr. Hamilton in Mechanical or Architectural Drawing, Electricity or Electronics. Anyone interested in mechanics will find a suitable class among one of Mr. Singer's many courses. They can choose from Woodworking, Cabinetmaking, Carpentry, General Metal Working, Welding or Machine Shop. The industrial arts teachers are two very busy gentlemen. MR. ALEX SINGER A farewell party for Mrs. Janice Threw, who substituted for Mrs. Dickey at the beginning of the year. In this technological age, the job of a homemaker or a farmer is not as simple as it used to be. Appliances in the home are time saving but complicated. Huge agricultural machinery has now replaced the horse and plow. To help future homemakers cope with all their labor-saving devices, Mrs. Dickey teaches home economics. The sci- ence of agriculture has become rather complicated with the introduction of new varieties of crops and livestock, larger machinery, agricultural chemicals, etc. Mr. Templeton instructs his students in various aspects of farming. Homemaking and farming are very important to the future of our country and we are lucky to have teachers like Mrs. Dickey and Mr. Templeton. MR. LOUIS TEMPLETON MRS. JEANETTE DICKEY . HELEN DRY MRS. LOIS SMITH MRS. VERA PITTMAN BUSINESS Any one who has ever been irritated by the click-click of a slow typist can sym- pathize with the typing teachers, Mrs. Helen Dry and Mrs. Vera Pittman. They both also teach Shorthand. Secretarial Practice is also handled by Mrs. Dry. Mrs. Lois Smith teaches some of the basics of business in General Business and Book- keeping. These three teachers have produced many fine secretaries. MR. GARY GLENZY MISS HELEN MORGANSTERN PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical education takes many diverse forms at P.C.H.S. Fall and winter are spent in archery, softball, volleyball, flag football, wrestling, and basketball. In the spring the girls have badminton and tumbling before Miss Morganstern runs them out in the cold for more archery and track. Mr. Glenzy's boys go out for softball and track. Both instructors have been trying to keep all us stu- dents in good physical shape. MR. KEN JOGGERST A man of iron, nerves of steel. This description has to be applied to Mr. Joggerst. Any teacher who takes the wild sophomores out in a car for driver's education has to have a good set of nerves. GUIDANCE Two of the busiest people at P.C.H.S. are Mr. Smith and Mrs. Wilson. At the beginning of this year, both counselors were helping the students to adjust their schedules. Throughout the year, they help ad- minister tests, for example the freshmen NEDT and the junior ACT. Seniors go to these counselors to ob- tain guidance for college next year. At the end of the year, they are busy assisting underclassmen to select classes for the next year. MRS. SHIRLEY BIGHAM SPECIAL EDUCATION The special education department of Pinckney- ville school is one of the few offered in this area. Students come from Pinckneyville, Trico, Tama- roa, and DuQuoin. The department is capably instructed by Mrs. Bigham. MRS. LULAROSE WILSON - BETTY STUMPE and MRS. C.K. LONGSHORE. MRS. NANCY WEIMAN MRS. NADINE CRAIG MRS. MYRTLE TEMPLETON Mrs. Craig and Mrs. Weiman are our school secre- taries. Their jobs are composed of keeping school records, handling mail, and transacting such student business as student fees, telephone calls, etc. Another pair of ladies important to the school's welfare are Mrs. Longshore and Mrs. Stumpe, the school nurse and secretary. They are available to students who become ill at school or are in- jured. Mrs. Templeton, the school librarian, is in charge of the school's books, reference materials, and audio- visual materials. Among the most important are janitors, cooks, and bus drivers. Think of all the clutter that would accumulate if the janitors x didn't sweep up after us messy students. Imagine the starving kids at noon if we didn't have a cafe- = = teria in which to eat. This year our school offers a hot sandwiches for lunch and a breakfast program. if Some students might prefer that our school didn't have bus drivers so they wouldn't have to come to school, but these men also take fans to all the games and clubs to various activities. All students owe a big thanks to these people who help run the school. On the next few pages are the means and methods by which the groups and organizations of P.C.H.S. raised their contributions to the annual Heart Fund. ‘las r The Hi-Tri cake walk produced some surprised, hungry looks on the faces of P.C.H.S. students. The Readers Theatre from Sparta and the Pinckneyville Speech Team presented a night show for the Heart Fund. Volleyball games were most predominant during the Heart Fund week. And now a few candid shots for you to remember and enjoy... Spanish and French Club show that they are pretty good in sports too with a real good game. G.A.A. vs Letterman proves to be a genuine battle of the sexes. The female members of the faculty and the N.H.S. battle it out for the winner's circle. Surprisingly enough, the men of the P.C.H.S. faculty prove to be no match for the Freshmen and members of the F,F.A. as the faculty won each of the two exciting basketball games for Heart Fund. Make the baskets and you might have either won a bag of cookies from the Library and Science Club or some candy from the Lettermen and Science Club. Amusing expressions were brought about as the seniors were measured for caps and gowns, and while we brushed our teeth with fluoride. Ye. FRESHMAN CLASS TRIP Being clowns was the main activity of this years freshmen, as they were not used to the idea of being in high school. Saturday afternoon a choice was offered; one could go see the Hermitage or goof off all afternoon. Once again the hardier souls went to the pool while others took the tour or just plain goofed off. The team's record of 6-4 is not too impresive but when you stop and think that this is the first winning sea- son in quite some time, the winning record is an accomplishment. The thirteen seniors that will graduate are to be commended on their out- standing leadership and hustle throughout the year. After Coach Renn made the boys realize that he was running the team, they started gaining confidence. As for the future, it has to look bright. Things like the very first day of school when we were green freshies. New teachers and new friends. To top that year off was the class trip to Ferne Cliff. Then we came back as sopho- mores. A year filled with dissecting helpless animals and frightening helpless driver's ed. teachers. Again the year ended with a class trip, this time to the St. Louis Zoo, The junior year showed many changes. The school year was quite full, and to finish it, we did something different. Instead of a trip, we held the prom. An evening in the Orient. As usual, summer quickly passed and we were back, now mighty seniors. As this year draws to a close, it brings with it the re- alization that we will soon part, perhaps forever, from now-familiar teachers and old friends.
