FOOTBALL Coach Bill Swaby; Co-Captains, Terry Masters, and Bill Roe. August ended with the resounding crash of football pads and helmets. As most of us trudged back to classes, fatigued by a wonderfully enjoyable vacation, the football team was hard at work. While the crunch of muscle against muscle marked the end of a pleasantly hot summer it ushered in one of the finest football seasons in the history of the school. This year’s version of the Panthers was a truly great team. Records were their hallmark. They won more games, 8; scored more points, 330; rushed more yards, 2544; passed more yards, 1079; and scored more points in a single game, 88; then any other team in the school ' s history. To add the icing to the cake they became the first Panther team to defeat Murphysboro. More important, our Panthers had the indelible marks of a real champion. Time and time again they proved themselves by their de¬ sire, dedication, courage, perserverance, selflessness, fortitude, and fighting spirit. Underdogs early in the season, they were, by the end, considered by many to be the finest team in Southern Illinois. A veteran backfield of Roe, Masters, Mathenia, and Kuhnert carried the ball be¬ hind the hard charging line of Mason, Harrison, Davis, Daffron, Brand, Hicks, Mc- Donnough, and Michels. When All-State halfback Jim Mathenia injured his foot in the Chester game, Ernie Ogilvie stepped in to do a fine job. From time to time the line play was strengthened by the play of Beaty, Bigham, and Smith. Poised, polished, and power-packed, OUR PANTHERS proved themselves a credit to the community, the school, their classmates and to themselves. Outstanding teams may appear in the future but when the last whistle has sounded we will always remem¬ ber this year with fond memories. With only one regular returning from last year ' s team, many thought this would be a rebuilding year. But Don Stanton, coach, put together a fine, balanced, sharp-shooting team sparked by Jack Margenthaler, captain; Bill Roe; Danny Fulton; Bill Lacy; and Tom Daffron. These aggressive starters were aided by Andy Mason, reserve center; Sam Ulrich, a junior reserve who could come off the bench and play any position well; Ralph Rheinecker; Richard Roethe; and Bob Rigdon. By February 14 the team had won nineteen and lost only three, had lost out in the semi-finals of the Centralia Tournament, had finished second at the Salem Tournament, and had won the Southwes¬ tern Egyptian Conference. The Panther team of 1961 was one of the short¬ est the school has produced, but few if any teams of the past could match these Panthers in courage, hus¬ tle, and most of all desire to win. FRONT: B. Then the ensemble and solo numbers, after days of rehearsal, performed at the district contest at Alton. The winners went on to the state contest at Carbondale. The year ' s activites snapped into action with the traditional Initiation and Kangaroo Court with each Big Sister seeing her Little Sister safely through her court sentence. Several members attended fall and spring conferences at Du Quion and Collinsville respectively. The holiday dance and the mother-daughter banquet were, as usual, the big projects the group sponsored. The strength of the year’s program lay in the regular meetings where carefully chosen speakers channeled the girl ' s thoughts toward a sound and secure future. t ' The Girls’ Athletic Association is an extracurricular activity for girls. For attending practices which are held after school, dif¬ ferent awards are given according to the years of membership. Each student works during the school year doing many jobs; thus she will know how to work in each department. They also take part in reading and reviewing books for the Illinois Reading Service. They meet several times a year for dinners, parties, picnics, and gift exchanges. The librarian is Mrs. Templeton. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society was founded to overcome the de-emphasis of scholastic or ac¬ ademic interest in secondary education. Since social and athletic activities were holding the center of the stage, several schools throughout the United States formed honor societies to meet local needs. From the apparent successful operation of these local societies came the National Honor Society whose constitution was written and adopted in 1921. The society recognizes character, service, leadership, and scholarship as goals to be sought and maintained on the secondary level as well as all during life. This year the Helen Kuykendall Chapter of the National Honor Society was founded at Pinckneyville through the efforts of Mrs. Wilson, Mr. Lemmon, Mrs. Dry, Mrs. Feltmeyer, Miss Sanders, and Mrs. Templeton.
