The Pinckneyville Panthers took the football season in their stride this year, breaking out with a team that scored, in the minds of the Pinckneyville fans, a successful record. In spite of the fact that the Panthers only broke even by Winning four and losing four, we do not think in terms of games won and lost, but in terms of scores, victims and victors. The boys lost half the games, but won recognition and praise in these games as Well as the game which they won. One of the best games of the season was the defeat of the Ghentmen at the hands of the Murphysboro Red Devils. This game ended with Murphysboro on the upper end of a 6-- 0 score, and, since Murphysboro later gained the title of Conference Champions, the holding of the Champs to one touchdown gives the Panthers recognition among Conference schools. The highlight of the season, though, was the scalping of the DuQuoin Indians, 19-13, in their own back yard. This is the traditional rival game of the year, and the P'ville Eleven play and practice all season with their eyes and hopes trained on this one battle. After eight years of being the loser, the Panthers finally broke through their losing streak, and came home proudly bearing the dripping scalps of eleven DuQuoin Indians. Since the boys have put an end to eight years of losing to the DuQuoin Eleven, We expect them to be hitting their stride and to give our neighbor rivals a dose of eight straight losses. 34 From left to right: Top row: Bob Stanton, Fullbackg Don Noward, Quarterback, Bob Rothenberger, Halfbackg Carl Pursell, Left Guard. Bottom row: Dean Gladson, Right End, Charles Hundley, Left Tackle, Joe House, Right Guard, Glen Hamilton. Centerg Jim McCurdy, Right End. Much of the success of the '43 season is attributed to Coach Ghent. He worked hard and long over our Panthers, and received his reward at the end of the DuQuoin game. We regret that Coach Ghent has left our faculty and team, but he is now on a gridiron of battles which go much deeper and are more serious than our local football games. We hated to lose him and still miss him, but we shall miss him even more when the football season for 1944 rolls around. How- ever, we send him our very best wishes, with the hope that he will soon return to our staff of teachers, with victory carefully tucked in his vest pocket, a victory which can be used with fu- ture Panther Elevens. We'll also miss ten lettermen, who will be graduated this spring. They are leaving P. C. H. S. gridiron for the battlefields on the four corners of the earth, and we send them with praise and good wishes. We know they will display the same caliber of fight and sportsmanship that was their practice while fighting for the Blue and White. These boys are: Pete Hicks, Paul Kuhn- ert, Bob Clark. Max Hutchings, Wfinton Keene, Bob Stanton, Bob Rothenberger, Carl Pursell, Dean Gladson and joe House. In spite of the loss of these ten men, we are looking forward to a big 1944 season with the following lettermen, who are returning to the folds of P. C. H. S. next fall: Gene Stotlar, Don Noward, Larry Moore, Charles Mann, Bob Mann, Carl Birkner, jim McCurdy and Charles Hund- ley. 35 V DEPARTMENT OF WAR MERRILL THOMAS, Coach From left to right: First row: Bill Ulrich, Bob Roth- enberger, Gene Stotlar, Winton Keene, Jim McCurdy, Bob Stan- ton, Merrill Thomas, Coach. These boys are included with the first squad, but have played a great part in the successful season of the B Squad. The boys who are members of the B Squad are very important in the eyes of the school, for it is to these boys we look for future basketball material. They take their basketball seriously, with the main hope of being one of the first ten Panthers some day. They play various teams from surrounding communities during the season, and they gave a good account of themselves this year. Their biggest accomplishment was the Sparta Freshman-Sophomore Tourna- ment. The six boys who did most of the playing in this tournament were Brown, Jones, West, Kellerman, Craig and Pundsack. In their first game they defeated Free- burg 34-48, and also took the second game from Marissa by a score of 35-32, after carrying the game into an overtime period. On the final night, they lost to Sparta in a hard fought game by a score of 37-34. This team had beaten Sparta during the season, and played their outstanding game against Centralia, although they came out on the little end of the score. Ford Dunn, coach of this steady, hard fighting team, does not get many thanks for his work now, but we will remember and thank him when these boys take the Sweet Sixteen. LABOR BGARD A thankful note should be in the voice of every receiver of the 1943-44 an- nual. The staff and Miss Getzie deserve it. With priorities as the wolf at their door, the staff and Miss Getzie - - for they are inseparable - - toiled on a yearbook of memories which would have been sadly missed by the students if this project had been dropped. While thanks are being passed out, the Senior Class and Mr. Vaughn deserve some, too, for coming in on the financial end of things. The Pyramid could not be printed without the mon- ey earned and given to the Staff by the Senior Class. The Staff was under the capable editorship of Elsie Eleanor Smith, and assisted by Dorothy Uhe. The Business Manager was Norman Brostmeyer, with Richard Hammack assisting and sharing the headaches. The various editors were: Humor Virginia Byer and Joe House Society Betty Jean Koontz Sports Max Hutchings Calendar . Helen Bauersachs Snapshots . . . Imogene Moore The advertising was taken over by Erma Jean Ragland and Jean Ritter, the typists were Georgia Moore and Margaret Goforth, and subscriptions were han- dled by Virginia Blackburn. The shortage of materials, as well as the increased engraving and printing business, make the publication of the yearbook anything but pleasant, so, treasure your 1944 Pyramid. It has been through many trials and tribulations. L . - A - ATTCDRIXIEV GENERAL The student government of PCI-IS had a more-than-usualn task for the year since there were national responsibilities as well as school interests. Through the Student Council, the school followed the schools-at-war-program, mapped out by the Federal Government, by purchasing jeeps, planes, and other G. I. equipment through the selling of war bonds and stamps. The Student Council also sponsored the sending of the Sphinx to all service- men in the '41, '42, and '43 graduating classes and to those who were drafted or who enlisted this year. Homecoming activities were carried out, student pro- grams given, the advancement of student conduct, a record library was started, and all-school parties were planned for a wholesome PCHS social season. These are only a few of the activities your Student Council sponsored as this group is usually either behind all student projects and activities. This group rep- resents the students' Wishes and opinions. The President of the Student Council was Betty Jean Koontz. Other officers were: Vice President Rosamond Miller Secretary Erma Jean Ragland Treasurer Richard Hammack Mr. Harley Quillman, Mrs. Ruth Allen and Mrs. Athalae McGuire were the very able faculty advisers with the latter sponsoring the schools-at-war pro- gram for PCHS. This or- ganization, under the directorship of Mrs. Helen Kuykendall, the Libra- rian, planned and discussed matters relative to the library in general. Although this was Mrs. Kuykendalks first year on the PCI-IS facul- ty, she came through like a veteran. Under her guidance and the pres- idency of Norma Jean Baker, the library Club made library cards and pockets as their contribution to the Junior Red Cross work in PCHS. Officers of the year were: President Norma Jean Baker Secretary Xvanita Irwin Treasurer Evelyn Myer Student Council Representative Evelyn Meyer The Library Club is a fairly new PCI-IS activity, organized last year. This new Club has proved itself many times in two years of service by helping keep the library straight and the books in good condition. So, keep up the good work, Library Club. PCHS Little Theater group, the Black Masque organization, under the superb direction of Miss Iva Beetlev. added their spark of patriotism by producing as the annual homecoming play, Victory Home,', a patriotic three act farce, in which the follow- ing students took part: Norman Brostmeyer, Vivian Keene, Fred Steele, Virginia Ritter, Peggy Kuykendall, Don Jones, Ola Mae Rice, Bill Hart- well, Richard I-Iammack, Bill Ulrich, Erma Jean Ragland, Elsie Eleanor Smith and Bettv Jean Koontz. Y, i ASSOCIATED PRESS The freedom of the press poured forth both severe criticisms and humor into the ears of the PCHS family this year, which has been the Sphinx policy since its birth in 1940. The staff pushed every effort to represent the voice of the students, by the students, and for the students, advocating for the school what was most fairly demanded. Each staff member had the experience of being a page editor and, of course, a reporter. This course follows strongly the trend of its name, Creative Writing. Besides issuing fourteen editions of the school paper, The Spfaillx, the Class put two special mimeographed papers off the production line, and a special sheet in the Christmas issue of the Sphinx. There was also various other forms of writing attempted. With the smudge of printers' ink and the counts of a headline in their foreheads , these future OJ journalists march out of a year in the newspaper world under the slick handling of Miss Marie Scoop', Baudi- son, who certainly knows the tales and ends of things. CIVILIAN DEFENSE After a two years' relapse, the Pep Club convalescented this year under the revivalship of Miss Bobbie McNeal, who had plenty of what such a pep organization demanded. Virginia Byer was elected their very able President. This club gave oomph to the school spirit by bringing out new de- vices of arousing pep and by standing behind the most capable cheerlead- ers, who were Virginia Blackburn, Natalie Ritter, and Billie Keenan, with Roberta McCrary and Ola Mae Rice substituting when needed. When there was pep to stir, the pep club was there! Under the extremely good directorship of Mr. A. T. Atwood, the DuQuoin band instructor, this band swung out with marches that stirred the students as never before. They beat out the Loyalty so that every student sang it with his mouth stretched to the limit. The band certainly did its part in pepping up the school spirit. Besides a special concert before the assembly, basketball game ap- pearances, the DuQuoin festival, they also entertained civic groups. The band increased from fifteen members at the beginning of the year to over forty members by the end of the year. These students tramped back out to school three nights every Week to rehearse, practice, march, etc. May the PCI-IS band of 1943-44 forever march on! The Chorus gave a very beautiful Christmas Cantata and also fur- nished the vocal melodies for school activities, P. T. A. and other civic organizations. The Chorus also participated in the graduation exercises, and did a very good job. If sharp notes and sometimes flat notes were heard floating from the assembly or the social room every Tuesday, Wednesdayf and Thursday after school, the students and teachers knew the Chorus and Miss Reidel- berger were doing overtime again. XVe can not praise students enough who will stay after school to take part in such activities as Chorus, nor can we praise the teacher enough who will come from another school and spend three afternoons a week after her regular hours of teaching so that PCI-IS can boast of a chorus. It is such spirit that keeps PCI-IS on top, leading many surrounding high schools in activities, and a grand school to be a part of or to associate with. From lef: to right: First Row. AMERICAN RED CROSS Footloose living often results from catastrophic times such as these. However, there are always groups as the Hi-Tri, which stand ready to Hght those motives with moral inspirations. This organization not only lived up to its reputation as a good-living builder but also as a morale builder. It put its patriotism in by support- ing the Junior Red Cross and by selling defense stamp corsages through- out the year.
