U xxsvxfi mu all 4,147 Tl-IE COMMANDING CDFFICERS In spite of the fact than there is a shortage of members of the teaching profession, P.C.I-I.S. has been bestowed with a very fine faculty this year. Besides a faculty that rates tops, we have been fortunate in having Mr. Clyde A. McDaniel as Principal and Mr. Harley F. Quillman as Assistant Principal. Mr. Roy R. Chenoweth began the year as a member of the Social Science Department, but was inducted into the United States Army in February. Mrs. Tillie McGuire has filled the vacancy in this department. Aside from the regular daily classes, some of the teachers have taught night classes, such as, Spanish, taught by Miss Baudisong Typing I and II, taught by Miss Getzieg Shorthand I, taught by Miss Brownlee, Agriculture, taught by Mr. Templeton, and Wfoodworking, taught by Mr. Kellerman. These are all greatly appreciated by the citizens of Pinckneyville and surrounding communities. To these members of the Faculty and to the Faculty members for the past four years, the Seniors are more than grateful. These people have been untiring in their efforts to prepare us for our future life. To these people we give undying thanks. liirsr Rim-Iiurli Curtis, Home Iiconomicsg Ray Ramlolph. LIEUTENANT CCDMMAINIDERS Left to Right: Fred Pundsack, Presidentg jake Perzia, S tary, Ted Wolfe, Vice-President, Nina Mohr, Treasurer. As Senior classes go, ours is tops! We have been kind to the Freshmen, lenient with the Sophomores, and tolerant of the Juniors. This alone is a great accomplishment, but we have not stopped here. The Seniors have been outstanding in every school activity. Listen to the success story of the Class of '43!! We have led in Football, Basketball, Student Council, Sphinx, Hi-Tri, Hi-Y, Black Masque, Music, Cheerleaders, and Pyramid. In the spring we gave the Gay Goose, our Senior play, which was one of the most successful plays ever staged in P.C.H.S. Well, all in all, the last four years have been happy and successful, and We leave with sincere regret. SDL F. 7?-cal'L's1d0nt s urvr' f one We,re the Sophomores! We aren't very big yet, but we,re learning fast. We've learned that Seniors won't bite and the Juniors are still a little bit bewildered although they don't like to show it. But everyone can be proud of us Sophomores! Already we've done a lot for P.C.H.S. just look at those swell basketball players, Squirt Noward, Gene Stotlar, R. Ginn, and Carl Birkner. In dramatics, there is Bob Dudenbostle and Richard Hammack. They both did grand in the Homecoming play. Although they werenlt queens, Nan Ritter and Sylvia Trefftzs gave the other candidates some close competition. Didn't the Sophomores get more signatures for the Southern Illinois Normal University petition than any other class? You bet we did! But, of course, you don't have to take our word for it. Just look at the pictures on the following pages. Now really, aren't we a good- looking class? We could go on for pages and pages pointing out reasons why we,ll make an unusual Senior class in only two more years. But we don't have to do that. We know you are already convinced. But in case you do need further proof, just notice who we chose as our leaders this year: President e , e Don Williams Vice-President Rosamond Miller Secretary e be as S , s Gene Stotlar Treasurer , s s rrjoann Wagner Student Council Representative Ruth Bommerscheim Sponsor be or s or Alice Tate We would like to give a vote of thanks to Miss Tate for standing by and giving us all that help this past year. 25 , FQS' S50 'den 1 F I-If, Spcr IR IIYNIA LUCIIIY ARNI T'IE NIARCARI T ARYI-TTI: DONAID ASI-IBY IIJW ARD BAUNIANIN W ILI IAM BIHCR BI ANCHI ISIGHAM CARI BIRKNER RLJTH BOMNIFRSCHILIM LILA BRANDHORST BURNI LL BROWN ROSI- CAS NORNIA CAUPFRT INIOGFINE DIHNTOIN MARION DIPPEL ROBFRT DUDLNIBOSTEL IANAI S DUNN IILSSI DYI R VI NI TA LSTIHS WILLIAM FAUST GLORIA I-FLTMFYER XI INI C IAC OXIO I C CII NN HAMII I'ON RICHARD HANIMACK XX ILLIANI HARTXX LI L NORNIADI NI HFSTI-R DORIS HILI ISI I l'Y I YNN HUBII P NX ILI IAM HUCCINS CA l'HI RINI II IIC Q ICENIQ .IACKSON BILLIIC KEENAN RUSSELL KIQLLERMAN VIRGINIA KNOX JANE LAMBIZRT XXILISUR I,IiIi KENNETH LEINNINGTON OSCAR LINIZE ESTHER LUEKER JAMES MCCURDY I X. The boys who are playing their first year of var- sity basketball are: Albert Guebert, Edgar Alms, and Ezra Kessel from Percy, and Winton Keene, Pete,' Hicks, Gene Stotlar and Don Noward from Pinckneyville. At the end of the first nine weeks, the team suffered a great loss when Bill Rouff, a former P.C.H.S. letterman, moved to Mt. Vernon. Last year the Pinckneyville quintet had an excellent record when they took second place in the Regional Tourna- ment and then went to the Collinsville Sectional. This year, the Panther five also took second place in the Regional, suf- fering defeat at the hands of the DuQuoin Indians. How- ever, in accordance with this year's plans, they did not enter the Sectional. We were very proud of the Panthers this year, but expect them to come back with more force and fight next year. IN SPITE OF PRIOIQITIES The Pyramid, our annual year book, was edited by a group of students who were especially adapted to creative work. The presentation of the yearbook, in regard to assimilation and publication, was the chief task of the Annual Staff. Under the fine leadership of the Editor, Lajoy Beck, supplemented with the capable assistance and cooperation of Bill Ulrich, Assistant Editor, Fred Pundsack, Business Man- ager, Norman Brostmeyer, Assistant Busines Manager, Ruth Gibson, Art Directorg and under the eflicient guidance of the sponsor, Miss Emma Getzie, the Pyramid of 1945 is one of the best ever published at P.C.H.S. It was through the hard work and careful planning of these people and the rest of the Pyramid Staff that the Pyramid was published. It may, indeed, be said that these pages were taken from the life of young people in a troubled world. It is their job to represent their class or club as a governing body of the school. This, in turn, gives the students an op- portunity to learn through actual practice, the democratic way of government. This year, the Student Council sponsored the sale of Activity Tickets, breaking all records with a new high of 347 tickets sold. They also had charge of all Homecoming plans. They sponsor clean-up campaigns and promote school spirit. The Student Council is headed by Bessie Marie Ritchey, President, who represents the Hi-Tri organization, Donald Keene, Vice-President, who represents the Senior class, Nina Mohr, Secretary, who represents the Forensic Club, and jim Stotlar, Treasurer, who represents the Hi-Y organization. This club is The Library Club, and was organized and is sponsored by Miss Beulah Hutchins, Librarian. The following officers were elected for this school year: Evelyn Meyer President Wayne Giacomo Vice-President Virginia Mayer Secretary -Lf?-4 The members of this club learn to classify books, shelve books, and they also learn to conduct themselves properly in a library. They also learn how to mend and keep the books in good condition. This has been one of their interesting projects, and the students have been doing some very good work on the old books in our library. The Library Club observed Book Week,', and the library was dec- orated with posters and pamphlets observing this week. The Library Club also entered an interesting and pretty float in the Homecoming parade. X This club is for the benefit of all the people who enjoy reading and working in the library. VICTORY FOR FREE SPEECI-I The Forensic Club is an organization for speech students. The club offers debate and individual work such as readings of prose and poetry. In the fall, the following officers were elected: Betty Jean Koontz President Frma jean Ragland Vice-President Jeanette Dillow O , Secretary Mary Helen Kuykendall . . -. Treasurer Each Forensic member gets a certain number of points for every speech or reading given to the public. Due to the war, the rating is made within the school rather than inter-scholastic as in former years. Tour- naments have been discontinued also because of the war, and points are given to members who do work in school rather than at tournaments. Some of the different kinds of work done in Forensic are: Oratorical, Dramatic, Humorous Readings, Original Declamation, Extemporaneous Speech, Poetry and Debate. The Forensic Club held their annual Carnival on October 27, which was a huge success. They also entered a beautiful float in the Home- coming parade which won many compliments as well as Hrst prize. WE HEREBY IQATIGN--WE HEREBY--WE BLACK-QUT Debate is one of the foremost activities of the Forensic Club. In past years the members of the Pinckneyville teams have entered numerous contests in the surrounding towns. This year, due to the war, it has been impossible for these contests to be held. In spite of this the club has been exceedingly active. Several debates have been given to which the public was invited. This procedure proved to be quite satisfactory in keeping the debaters in good form. The ques- tion this year was Resolved: That a Federal Wforld Government should be established. A The proficient and prominent debate members were Betty Koontz, Bill Pundsack, Richard I-Iammack, Bob Dudenbostle, Peggy Kuyken- dall, and Glen Hamilton. Many of the members have also been active in individual speech. The sponsor of debate this year was Mr. Roy Chenoweth. From left to right: Roy R. Chenoweth, Sponsor, Peggy Kuykendall. HSCGCDPH n CENSORED FLASH CENSGRED The Sphinx Staff is composed of those students who are interested in journalism and who are members of the Creative English Class. The Sphinx, which is published every two weeks, has a circulation of 422 copies. This year, for the first time, various members of the staff prepared a weekly column for the Democrat, the local newspaper. This group of students were known as the Supplement Staff and their duty was to bring high school news to the pages of the Democrat. Editor-in-Chief of the Sphinx for this year is Sarah Ann Gfadson, who held this responsible position the entire year. Other permanent positions were held by Sara Lazenby, Business Manager, Ruth Gibson, Advertising Manager, Helen Vancil, Circu- lation Manager, and Muriel Dunn, Financial Manager. The other positions are changed every four weeks so that all students may gain some experience in all the fields of features, editorials, news briefs, and sports. The Managing Editors of the Sphinx for this year were Bessie Marie Ritchey, Mary Helen Kuykendall and Lucille Stern. The staff was composed of those students previously mentioned and the following: Eugene Anthes, Walter Frazer, Lorene Wilson, Melba Carson, Elaine Carson, Bill Hag- ler, Winton Keene, Geneva Caldwell, Geneva Macke, Genevieve Bouas, Jim Grumer, Don Keene, Bob Cunningham, Kenneth Wade, Barney Sutliff, Lyle Robb, julia Bod- nar and Phyllis Pursell. WE SALLJTE OUR LJ. S. The Black Masque is an organization for those students interested in drama. It is one of the school's most active clubs. In the course of the year, it presents the Home- coming play, a number of short noon hour plays, and this year continued the work on a movie which began in 1940. The Homecoming play this year was The Panther's Clawf, an extremely exciting mystery. The cast was composed of: Mary Kuykendall, Bessie Marie Ritchey, Sarah Ann Gladson, Erma Jean Ragland, Vivian Keene, Elsie Smith, Fred Pundsack, Bill Robb, Richard Hammack, Bill Ulrich, Bob Dudenbostle, and Loyd Minton. This is the second mystery presented by the club since its organization. Black Masque also has its social activities. The Band has played at many football and basketball games. Members of the band have taken part in many assembly programs and have played for the local organizations of Pinckneyville. They played at the patriotic program on December 7th. Besides these many activities, the band has planned their annual band concert. They have also planned a cake-walk, which is to be a benefit for the band, and a Spring festival, which is to be a community affair. Their Box Supper and Pie Supper were very successful and netted money for band expenses. The members of the band are as follows: CORNETS: Lowell Taylor, joel Marrow, Tom Mathews, Don jones. The fivefold aim of the organization is Character, Friendship, Courtesy, Pleasure, and Success. The watchword is Loyalty. Hi-Tri is a sister organization to the Hi-Y. The Hi-Tri gave its annual ceremonial for the freshman girls in the fall and col- laborated with the Hi-Y in presenting the highly anticipated Christmas party. The spring activities consisted of the annual Tea and the most important event of the year to Hi-Tri girls, the Mother and Daughter Banquet. In addition to these major activities the Senior big sistersv gave several parties for the freshman little sisters. This year, twenty-one boys were voted into the club and were initiated in the fall. The Hi-Y meets each Wednesday night. Following the business meeting, the boys are permitted to play in the gym. Each year the organization joins the Hi-Tri in an annual Christmas party. In addition to this party, there is a Hobo party in the fall and a Valentine party in February. The boys, as a group, attend church at least once during the year. The final activity is the Father-Son Banquet in April. Because of the war, attendance at the conventions was impossible. Each year the four boys of the club, who best represent the four standards of the club, have their names placed on a plaque which hangs in the hallway. The motto of this organization is Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve. The purpose of this organization is to practice brotherhood, honor rural opportunities and responsibilities, and develop those qualities of leadership which a Future Farmer should possess. During the year the club participates in a number of activities. The boys won honors in the Livestock Show at Marion, Illinois, and sponsored the Poultry and Grain Show at P.C.H.S. for all chapters in southern Illinois. Their very successful year ended with the main social event, the Father and Son Banquet, an activity which occurs each year.
