Q .X- Administration Faculty and Curriculum J The two men responsible for keeping our school running smoothly are Mr. Robert Ash, Superintendent, and our Principal, Mr. Warren Wade. These two men have Welded Pinckneyis school system into a program that provides an educational challenge and produces capable students. Assisting them in their work is Assistant Principal, Mr. Richard McCloskey, who has been a new addition to our school this past year. Mr. McCloskey has been an aid to both the administration and the students by being there when he was needed. Mr. Wade glances over some papers. Mr. Ash begins another day with a phone call. A great help to the students this year has been Mr. McCloskey. As part of the Pinckney High School Administra- tion, our secretaries play an important part. They aid the faculty and students. In the main office are two hard working secre- taries. Mrs. Molly Janowski takes care of student problems and also works in the book store. Mrs. Ruth Ann Milam helps Mr. Wadeby typing and an- swering the telephone. In the Superintendenfs office there is Mrs. JoAnn Matteson working as Mr. Ashis secretary. Mrs. Jean Wludyka manages the payroll for the teachers and keeps money for student funds. Mrs. Matteson finishes another day, Keeping ur School Mrs. Matteson concentrates on her daily jobs, Molly and Mrs. Milam make one of their daily office decisions. Molly performs one of her many tasks, on an Even feel Mr. McCloskey and Mrs, Milam discuss office business. Mrs. Wludyka Works busily making out pay checks. The people we students turn to when a question arises about college or just plain ordinary life are our three coun- selors, Mrs. Wilhelmina Swarthout, Mrs. Joyce Sherwin, and Mr. Welton Chamberlain. Mr. Chamberlain serves as the ju- nior and senior class counselorg Mrs. Swarthout supervises freshman and sophomore problemsg while Mrs. Sherwin concentrates her counseling service mainly to the juniors. Mrs. Swarthout helps Kim Cantwell set up her schedule. S A--,M Mr. Chamberlain, Mrs. Swarthout and Mrs. Sherwin talk over counseling problems. Guidance Through i Mr. Chamberlain and Rosa Yoder discuss college plans. Mr. Chamberlain relaxes and waits for the next student to arrive. nde s t d ' Mrs. Swarthout is always ready to assist you with a smile. Mrs. Sherwin is a new member of the counseling staff this year One person who does a lot to keep our school clean is Mr. Russell. Mr. Cates, another custodian, keeps our halls uncluttered. People behind the scenes in our school are the cooks, Who provide us with nutri- tious lunches, our bus drivers who get us to school on time in the morning, and the cus- todians who you don't often see in the halls until the 2: 15 rush is over. Without these people adding their personal touches, Pinckney High School would not run as smoothly as it does. Meet the bus drivers fstandingj Mrs. Gaspar, Mandy DeBar, Mrs. turedj Mrs. McGinn, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Curts, Mrs. Krahn, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Neuman, Mrs. Hollister, Mrs. Baughn, Mr. Shinnault, Mr, Michael, Mrs. Dotts, Mrs. Debor, Mrs. Douglas, Mr. VanRaden, Mrs. Bruer, Bus Coordinator, and Mr. Haltom, Bus mechanic. fSittingj Reynolds, Mr. Brown, Mrs. DeMichael, and Mr. Singer. Mrs. Tepatti, Mrs. Potter, Mrs. Childs, and Mrs. Stratton. tNot pic- Communication Means English With three new members added to the staff this year, the English Department is rapidly taking on a new image. New courses are being offered to supplement traditional courses. It is hoped that every student will be able to locate his own area of interest in the field of English. English has too long been thought of as the oth- ern subject. We hope after this year that it is referred to as a subject to be taken, not avoided. Mrs. Schember smiles as she collects a home- work paper from Bill Meyers. Larry -Curts, Gary Pettis, and Dave Dunstan wonder what's for English today, Mark Twain or Charles Dickens? Haque-W u And F orelgn Languages Spanish, along with its teacher, Mrs. Sue Osburn, were added to Pinclcneyls Foreign Language Department this year. Mr. Robert Dunn continues to teach French. With the help of these two languages, We can better commun- icate and understand the people of our shrinking world. Mr. Dunn, along with his students, takes time out for a challenging game of scrabble. Mr. Dunn helps close the commu,.L-ation gap through French. Mrs. Osburn demonstrates how to translate Spanish. The Social Science courses at P.H.S encourage each student to be able to courses are built around student needs which are always in transition. This year the students of Pinckney High are honored to have with them a very nice young man who happens to live in Tarare, France. His name is Florian Goutagneux. Flo, as his friends call him, has five sisters, making him the only son of a high school teacher. He is 18 years old. Flo is giving up his freshman year in college to be with us and is residing at the Valbert Keiser residence. Flo finds Pinckney High typically American. He enjoys all of the extra activ- ities put on by the school and finds our school spirit, com- pared With that in France, great! He has taken a real liking to ice skating and swimming and finds that the way we date is quite different. Flo thinks things are done in a bigger Way and they defi- nitely move faster. And though he thinks our way of living is better and We have more fun, he prefers France. His future plans include attending the Institut Jes Etudes Politiques in Lyon, France, in hopes of working with the State Department later. Flo! Coach Coughlin gives pointers to a player. Touchdown This year, the Junior Varsity Foot- ball team had two wins, over Stock- bridge and Bath, and one tie with Williamston. All the men on the team were dedi- cated and prepared to sacrifice for each other. They showed much hard work and they had the will to win, even though there were several injuries The type of football these young men played indicates there will be more wins in the next few years. Coaches Nurnberger and Coughlin think that the J .V. is a future football team. They were willing to sacrifice for the team and if the desire and hard work continues, there will be an even brighter future for Pinckney High School. Front row: R. Ralph, G. Marshall, J. Kitson, R. As We look back on the statistics of the 1970 Varsity Basketball season, We can say We've improved over the years. Our victories are attributed to the co-operation, hard work, and the dili- gence of every man on the team, in- cluding Coach Lincoln. We are sure that these athletes will one day make us a crack basketball team. Good Luck .T.Vfs! P.H.S. is behind you all the way. Freshman Spirit The Freshman basketball team is made up of 15 players who have put forth much hard work and practice this year. With that and the guidance of their coach, Mr. Harold Davis, they gave their opponents much competi- tion. Although not many victories were scored, they have shown much sportsmanship. Those people most closely associated with it are a group of girls known as cheerleaders. Their job is very exciting and full of fun, but it is also very de- manding of their time, talent, and energy. A cheer- leaderis main role is to try to instill in the student body a certain pride, loyalty, and spirit for their team and school. The task can be relatively easy when victories are plentiful, but it takes a nspecialw kind of student body to keep supporting a team that is experiencing an unsuccessful season. Pinckney High School has been praised for its spirit and good sportsmanship-We are all very proud of this reputation! A special Nthank-youi' belongs to the seventeen young ladies who have helped pro- mote and g'lead this spirit and enthusiasm-the CHEERLEADERS of PINCKNEY HIGH! H - J.V. Wrestling basically is an individual sport stressing self-reliance While at the same time, combines a team effort. A wrestler learns to be responsible to his team as well as learning his own capabilities and short comings. This year Pinckney's wrestling team contains a cross-section of students, from Freshman to Senior level. These students are trained and assisted by a very able man, Coach Hand, and his assistant, Coach Hanson. The years co-captains are Dennis Urbany and Fred Williams. Coach Hand shouts instructions to a Wrestler. 0 Pm Your M an First row: K. Clark, M. Charboneau, S. Swarthout, F. Williams, G. Reed, M. Brenemen, H. West. Second row: R. Dippold, E. Hustle I The aim of both Track and Cross Country, is to build up character in the athlete, and second, it gives a boy a chance to get rid of any excess energy in a constructive manner. Track and Cross Country are both individual sports but they stress team unity. Each boy is on his own during competition. If he does his individual job, he is helping the team. In Track and Cross Country this year, we have eight or ten lettermen. The Coaches, Jim Wicker and Tom Wilson, feel there is no way to go but up. With the fine nucleus we have, as well as other members of a fine Cross Country team, an exciting year of Track and Field we have had. Coach Reader seems prepared for the upcoming Baseball season. From the moment you take the first swing, until you tap the ball into the last hole, there are many minutes of excitement, depression and a feeling of success-just as in any other sport. Varsity Club meeting. Varsity Club The purpose of the Varsity Club is to create better school spirit in both the athletes and the student body, and also to produce a pride in our team. Any boy can gain membership if he has a Varsity letter, goes through initiation, and he is able to maintain good standing not only sport-Wise, but also scholastically. The Varsity Club sponsors activities not only to earn mon- ey -for themselves, but also to help the Pinckney Athletic Association provide for our school's sport facilities. The club, sponsored by Mr. John Hand, this year sponsored a dance, and travelled to Detroit to see a basketball game. The Art Club was created in order to promote any interest that anyone may have in the arts. The people enrolled in this class, and their teacher, Mrs. Sue Os- burn, have taken on the task of putting out a school news- paper. The Pacemaker supplies the students with news of school activities, both past and present. Through the paper, even those students who are not directly involved with the paper, can voice their opinions, and make others aware of them. This year, the staff published a Senior Book, created to summarize all the acitivities of the seniors, throughout their four years of high school. The Pacemaker has kept us well-informed.
