The person chosen by our class to receive this honor was always there to see that things were going right. His qualities of friendliness, loyalty, and deep understanding have won a place of high respect, ad- miration, and affection among both the student body and the faculty. With deep appreciation for his service to us as a teacher, friend, and sponsor we dedicate this, the 1959 Venus, to Mr. Lee J. Jordan, Jr. X' ka. Tomorrow is, love, money, and friends, And slaying true to our aims and end, Have we had a kindness shown, For kind words are not to receive alone. Let time wipe another's tears, 'Til in heaven the gift appears, And so we are nearing the journey's end, Where times at Pilot, love and eternity will blend. Madeline Embry Jane Kanoy, daughter of Mr. dz Mrs. John Lester Kanoy, Route Thomasville, North Carolina. 614445049 Tune: How Can I Leave Thee How can we leave you Dear friends at Pilot High? Our teachers were Mrs. Everette Whitlow and Mrs. Austin Keams. Soon school was out and we returned again in the fall as second graders. That year our teachers were Miss Ida Mae Alexander and Miss Amanda Wall. When school started again we were third graders, our teachers being Miss Ida Mae Alexander and Mrs. Henry Walters. That year we learned to write. Our fourth grade teachers were Mrs. Anna Lee Hinshaw and Mrs. Eleanor Hutchins. School was soon out. Then we were back again, this time as fifth graders. The teachers that year were Miss Mary Weant and Mrs. Henry Walters. That year most of us experienced our first train ride. Our sixth grade teachers were Mrs. Sue Martin, and Mrs. Moses Holmes. In the seventh grade our teachers were Mrs. Jack Camp and Mrs, Robert Tomlinson. Going back to school the next year was a real joy because that year we were finally eighth graders. Our teachers were Miss Thelma Conrad and Miss Vera Mae Ferree. We were thrilled about our trip to Raleigh and pleased with the way our graduation ceremony tumed out. Going back to school the next year was very different and we were all excited about the subjects we were going to take. Our ninth grade homeroom instructors were Mrs. Mildred Bames and Miss Frances Comman. Other teachers were Mrs. James Ragan,Commercialp Mrs. Virginia Revelle, English: Mrs. Geneva Palmer, Scienceg Mr. Charles Swicegood, Scienceg Mr. Hobert Wilson, coach and Historyp Mrs. Mildred Barnes, Home Economics, Miss Leta Miller, Bibleg Miss Frances Coman, English and Frenchg and Mr. Lemmons, Math. Our Class Presidents were: Martha Clodfelter and Barbara Clodfelterg Vice -Presidents, Loretta Truitt and Nancy Yokleyg Secretaries, Nancy Beck and Betty Byerlyp Treasurers, Betty Byerly and Madeline Embry. Soon after a short vacation we were back at school again then as sophomores. Our class officers were: Presidents, Gary Kanoy and Patsy Green: Vice -Presidents, Martha Clodfelter and Loretta Truitt, Secretaries, Madeline Embry and Barbara Clodfelter, Treasurers, Wayne Embry and Rex Walser. School was out and we were eager to return in the fall for we would be Juniors with many responsi- bilities on our shoulders. Our Junior Play That's Our Boy tumed out to be a real success. That year officers had a larger job than ever beforeg they were: President, Martha Clodfelterg Vice -President, Rex Walserg Secretary. Madeline'Embryg and Treasurer, Nancy Yokley. Our homeroom teacher was Mr. Wilburn Everhart. The faculty that year consisted of Mr. L. J. Jordan, Typing, Math, Bookkeeping and Selling, Mrs. Mildred Barnes, Home Economicsg Mr. Wilburn Everhart, English, History and Physical Education. Our Junior year was highlighted by the Junior-Senior Banquet given at the Y. M. C. A. The theme being Over the Rainbow. The next fall we could hardly believe we were seniors. So many things were to be done this year. Getting the annual together was a lot of work but we all enjoyed it. Then there was the senior play and our trip to Washington and New York. Then like always the year we had waited for so long was brought to a close by our commencement. It was time to say good -bye to all our friends, teachers, and dear Pilot, but we realized that we had finally reached our goal and must go our separate ways. Now we had to leave all this behind us and take on the great responsibility of facing the world outside. BARBARA CLODFELTER 23 1 Rex Calvin Nancy Y. We, the Senior Class of Pilot High, in the year of nineteen hundred and fifty-nine, being in sound body and having a clear mind, do make, publish and declare this the Last Will and Testament of our most prized possessions. To the faculty, we leave our most grateful thanks and appreciation for having taught us and having so much patience with us during the years we had together. To our parents we express our deepest appreciation and many thanks for the love shown in guiding us through the years, we leave the memories of our childhood days. To the Sophomores and Freshmen, we leave best wishes for as many wonderful hours as we have had, and we bequeath a strong encouragement to finish their education. NANCY BECK JUDY LORD It all started on a warm sunny moming as I took off for work in my helicopter. fYes, that's the fashion now-a-dayslp Every day I travel from my home in New Jersey to New York for my job as Musical Director on the Steve Allen Show. Funny, but my mind traveled back to Thomasville, N. C. and my classmates. Ah, what good times we used to have. I sat there basking in a feeling of good will and happiness. Suddenly my dream world was interrupted by a troubled sputter in the general direction of the motor, My eyes scanned the control panel and to my horror the fuel needle bounced over to empty! I quickly brought the 'Copter down on top of a building and climbed from my seat and searched frantically for an exit. l sent a distress note over the side to a garage on the block. It was answered by a mechanic in a whirlybird who brought a few gallons of fuel. And who do you think this mechanic was? This angel of mercy was none other than Willis Beck! I insisted that he tell me about the rest of the old gang. Willis himself is owner and operator of one of New York's largest garages. His partner is Ralph Brinkley who knows almost every- thing there is to know about cars. JOHN LITTLE is now owner of Hill's Drive-ln and even has three branch restaurants. DANNY THOMASON is now sales manager for all the Ford distributors in North Carolina. By the way, he was just named the world's biggest liar. I think it had something to do with chickens. HAROLD SMITH is now recording for Dot Records and has three gold records. He is married and is busy being a singing papa to his four kids. CHARLES LONG known professionally as Charlie Gleason, is TV's newest and most popular come- dian. Charles is a confirmed bachelor. l guess he is happy just making everybody laugh. JERRY MATTHEWS, that high school Romeo really struck it rich. Besides being a Hollywood Pro- ducer, he is married to Gina Bardot, the star of his latest movie. REX WALSER is now head coach at Notre Dame and the word is that he has a 5,000 acre estate. BILLY DARR is playing baseball with the Yankees and it looks like he's going to top all the batting averages this year. Despite all his fame, Bill and his wife still prefer life in good old Thomasville, so, during his off season they reside at their s5o,ooo winter home in Erwin Heights. CALVIN RILEY decided he liked the business here, so he now owns the Kaby Hosiery Mill. Besides that, he has five new mills in N. C. He is happily married and is the proud father of two children. MONROE MABE is perhaps the wealthiest farmer around. They just struck oil on his 20,000 acre ranch in Texas. Monroe and his wife think they are about the luckiest people in the world. WAYNE EMBRY is an electrical engineer at Western Electric. He and his wife own a beautiful home in High Point. Besides that, Wayne has a TV talent show designed to help young singers. JORENE JARVIS' wish has finally come true. She and her husband are the proud parents of a boy and a gifll As if being a mother doesn't keep her busy enough, Lorene is a beautician at the shop she owns. Another new development is their home in Walcliff Park. NANCY BECK is married of course, and has three children. She is also part time secretary to the mayor of Thomasville. She and her husband have just built a new split-level home. BARBAIUI CLODFELTER is neat as ever in her job as fashion model and editor of a new magazine. She and her husband live in New York City. JUDY LEONARD is owner of Thomasville 's largest beauty salon. She and her husband have just retumed from a European cruise. BONNIE STEVENSON has recently been promoted to the rank of Corporal in the WAF'S. She says that this is the life for her and she's going to make a career of it. MADELINE EMBRY has made quite a name for herself as the interior decorator for the American Square. Her husband Jerry is now owner of General Steel. They have four children, 2 boys and 2 girls. JUDY IJORD took the big step. She is married to Raeford Hunt. Being a nurse keeps her busy while their two children are at school. Judy is a wonderful nurse and is well-loved by all her patients. NANCY YOKLEY has no trouble holding the attention of her pupils at Pilot where she is teaching English. She is very proud of her husband Davis, who has been in the U.S. Navy 10 years. GAIL PIERCE is the most efficient secretary the govemor of N. C. ever had. She is married to a very successful Raleigh businessman, and they have one child. ANN SINK is a very happy army wife. She and her husband and children are living in Washington, D.C, where he is stationed. Ann is his legal secretary. RUBY EDDINGER is married and has two children. She has made good use of her friendly personality in her job as a social worker.
