This literary society was formed in memory of Fanny Crosby, who at the age of six weeks became blind as the result of a serious illness. Spiritual blindness was taken away when as a young girl she received Christ as her Saviour. Fanny Crosby is very well-known for the many gospel hymns she has written. For their verse, the Crosbys chose I Peter 2:2l: For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps with ln His Steps as their theme. The society hymn, written by their namesake, is There Will I Follow Thee. Burgundy and white are their colors and the white mum is the Crosby flower. The emblem contains a wreath denoting abundant life and victory, a quill for literary emphasis, and a green E representing the society name. The colors green and white stand for growth and purity. The society chose its motto and hymn, By life or Death , in memory of the life and testimony of John and Betty Stam, missionary martyrs to China. The Easter lily, the Evangelines' flower, portrays the life and death of Christ and the Christian's death and new life in Christ. According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all bold- ness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
